Bad narrator, predictable
Revisado: 11-24-24
The narrator is different. She does voices well but the pace was choppy and difficult to listen to. This somehow made it hard to follow or develop any caring for what happens to the characters. It’s also predictable.

Historia
Sallie Kincaid is the daughter of the biggest man in a small town, the charismatic Duke Kincaid. Born at the turn of the 20th century into a life of comfort and privilege, Sallie remembers little about her mother who died in a violent argument with the Duke. By the time she is just eight years old, the Duke has remarried and had a son, Eddie. While Sallie is her father’s daughter, sharp-witted and resourceful, Eddie is his mother’s son, timid and cerebral. When Sallie tries to teach young Eddie to be more like their father, her daredevil coaching leads to an accident, and Sallie is cast out.

Everything that can go wrong
Revisado: 06-24-23
Drawn out saga during prohibition Virginia. A girl becomes the head of her family business through a torturous series of events, but that’s not all. Everything that can go wrong does. The performance is good and kept me listening but the story doesn’t satisfy.

This one seemed quicker and less complicated than some earlier stories. Still amazing how the characters evolve with the times.

Relisten with new perspective
Revisado: 03-23-23
Pure sex and romance with emphasis on perfect bodies and looks.
I felt sad about their trips to the malls with mention of book stores knowing how things are turning out in 2023.
Still an easy read or listen. No stress.

Favorite of the romantic suspense
Revisado: 03-03-22
As many reviewers mention, this was a childhood favorite. I enjoyed it in Audible. The story follows a Stewart pattern with a young boy needing protection. This heroine is sharp and brave with perhaps one exception that would be a spoiler.
I can’t give five stars for the performance. The narrator could not decide if the French characters speak English like Prince Charles or with an accent. Occasionally her voice tones vary from deep to high, feminine to masculine, making it a bit difficult to tell who is speaking. The producer should listen and guide narrators towards consistency.

Historia
It was whispered all through London society that he was a murderer, that he'd spent his youth in an asylum and was not to be trusted - especially with a lady. Any woman caught in his presence was immediately ruined. Yet Beth found herself inexorably drawn to the Scottish lord whose hint of a brogue wrapped around her like silk and whose touch could draw her into a world of ecstasy.

I read it years ago and listen to it annually. Original plot point, great romance, great characters, great family., great performance. I love the whole series, not so much the prequels.
Narrator does the accents down well.

Historia
Lady Henrietta Maclellan longs for the romantic swirl of a London season. But as a rusticating country maiden, she has always kept her sensuous nature firmly under wraps -- until she meets Simon Darby. Simon makes her want to whisper promises late at night, exchange kisses on a balcony, receive illicit love notes. So Henrietta lets her imagination soar and writes "The Letter" - which becomes shockingly public. Everyone supposes that he has written it to her, but the truth hardly matters in the face of the scandal to come if they don't marry at once.

Good enough story, annoying narrator.
Revisado: 10-18-20
I like this book. It’s predictable as they almost all are but the characters are interesting. The narrator has an annoyingly blasé sound to her voice and expresses male passion with a strange waver.

A hit for this series.
Revisado: 08-23-20
I liked it better than Alaric’s book or North’s, which were far fetched, silly.
This one is somewhat more natural with fewer ridiculous misunderstandings between the H/H The characters have great chemistry. I enjoyed the secondary love story.
Performance wise, well, I like this narrator for the sort of sly undertone she imparts, but she is not very versatile in changing or creating voices for Ms. James’ novels.

Great performance and good story
Revisado: 06-29-18
We expected the two who met in a previous book to meet again. The performance enhances the story as real chemistry exists between these characters. The story is exciting, more with its connections to other characters than the main plot, which is ok, predictable. The voices and accents are perfect in my opinion. There is some repetition of adjectives that caused me to subtract one star. An experienced writer like Kleypas can do better. Perhaps the neat ending is a bit far fetched but it is a romance novel after all.

Not on par with the author's usual
Revisado: 05-23-18
I love this author and I was disappointed. The first half lags and the story is completely predictable. It is a constant chase type plot with the main characters traveling under duress. They always seem to be wet and cold. If you have read or listened to her other books you know there is usually something extra special and creative about the story and the characters. That is not really the case here except for the backgrounds of the three Dukes. We are supposed to feel bad for them. The repartee or dialogue is supposed to be witty but can be boring. I did, however, want to finish it, to hear it all the way through. I am interested enough to want to hear the rest of what is likely a series. Still, I wish she had pulled it back before publication.
