He does a great job of trying to document and explain the events on the ground. Sadly he has been treated so poorly. I am so impressed with his patience with the subject & humility when dealing with other human beings. The Epilogue was very inspiring. I highly recommend reading this book.

His efforts at research are earnest, but his conclusions are so biased it makes me wonder if he was threatened to make this book all warm fuzzies over China.
