Historia
For millennia the location of the Nile River’s headwaters was shrouded in mystery. In the 19th century, there was a frenzy of interest in ancient Egypt. At the same time, European powers sent off waves of explorations intended to map the unknown corners of the globe—and extend their colonial empires.

A story of man's explorations
Revisado: 07-02-23
I've read River of Doubt and Destiny of the Republic by Ms Millard and her other book on Churchill's early years. This book does not quite reach the heights of the books on TR and Garfield. Nonetheless, it's worth the listen. An interesting telling of a story about the British fascination with finding the source of the Nile that not many know about.
My listening experience, however, was diminished by the narrator. The narrator is gifted at accents and vocal tones. That made it easy for him to assign each subject person a specific accent and voice. But flipping back and forth to patrician British accents, French accents, mis-pronouncing Spanish accents...it was too much...was very distracting and in some segments cartoonish. A good narrator can convey the change in person with great subtlety. Here, I fault both the actor and the director for not trusting the listener and exercising such strong and blatant acting rather than just narrating.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

A great story
Revisado: 07-02-23
The story was interesting. I recommend it. Exactly the type of human survival after disaster story I like to hear about. The historical research of the author is impressive. Plus, I've been to Patagonia, Cape Horn, Beagle Channel, Terra del Fuego, and Straits of Magellean, enabling me to more fully understand the survival challenge here. However, while I respect and appreciate the narrator as a fine actor and a prolific and talented narrator, I feel this was a mismatch of material and narrator. The performance was just too breathless and overly dramatic for me. A straightforward narration would have worked better.

A year has passed since LAPD detective Renée Ballard quit the force in the face of misogyny, demoralization, and endless red tape. But after the chief of police himself tells her she can write her own ticket within the department, Ballard takes back her badge, leaving “the Late Show” to rebuild and lead the cold case unit at the elite Robbery-Homicide Division.

Just OK
Revisado: 11-12-22
A middling entry to the Bosch collection. There were changes to the characters that my family and I did not warm up to. Renee became too establishment. Plus too many gratuitous embellishments. So for example at the end there's a nice interaction with a bartender that was also a Vietnam Vet. A quick reference to the tunnels and that was it.
Without giving away the end, the reference to Bosch being exposed to radiation in a prior case was also a quick throwaway. And too many loose ends. So what happens with all of the killer's "souvenirs"?
Peter Giles narration was good as usual. Titus Welliver's delivery is too flat as a narrator. He's excellent portraying Bosch on the screen. Christine Lakin is above average.
We will continue to follow Bosch in any future books. This one was not memorable.

Historia
So begins a press release from a mysterious group known only as “The Five,” shortly after a vicious predator is murdered in San Francisco. The Five is made up of vigilante killers who are very bored…and very rich. They target the worst of society—rapists, murderers, and thieves—and then use their unlimited resources to offset the damage done by those who they’ve killed, donating untraceable Bitcoin to charities and victims via the dark net. The Five soon become popular figures in the media …though their motives may not be entirely pure.

Ended too soon.
Revisado: 10-23-22
The characters are finely drawn and consistent with what we know from prior books. The Lucas/Virgil relationship is sound. The narration by Ferrone is so good and adds dimension to the characters and story. All very satisfying. But, without giving away the ending, it was abrupt and did not fully satisfy the story line of this case. It was a disappointment. Do we have to wait a year for a sequel or completion of the story?

better narration needed
Revisado: 10-09-22
The storyline was of interest. Fairly consistent with prior books and the character development. However the narration was a huge disappointment. If not for the desire to keep up with the character, I would not have finished. I absolutely could not stand the vocals assigned to Mr Contreras. At best it was bad stereotyping.

Too graphic
Revisado: 08-16-21
The plot line and characters were interesting. However there was too much graphic and gratuitous sex. And too many scenes with males peeing; describing the process. I read a different book by the author that was enjoyable. So I thought I'd start this series. Phooey, I'm done.

Narration too stereotyped
Revisado: 08-11-20
Found the narrator to be annoying in how pronounced and stereotyped he interpreted and delivered the character voices. Should have been more subtle.
One portrayal in particular was beyond, so offensive, that of "Luigi". Supposedly Puerto Rican, but spoken in the most "Speedy Gonzalez Mexican cartoon stereotype". And the vocabulary....never in my life have I ever heard a Rican speak in that phoney baloney cadence nor call anyone Cheeeko. Shame on the reader, the director and the producer.
