Revisado: 01-11-20
It’s a fun mystery, like a cross between Christie and Wodehouse. The narrator’s RP is a bit over the top, but the rest of his accents and voices are well done. Not a fan of screechy falsettos, but it works for the countess. If you like Jeeves & Wooster and Poirot then give it a go. Highly mannered 1920s shenanigans abound, and the highly literary butcher is a highlight.

Overly Mannered, but a Good Mystery.
Revisado: 11-29-19
This is a lovely murder mystery, which works perfectly, but I want to get my criticisms out of the way first : The language sounds more American that British, but the research that has gone into this outside of that is fabulous. The story is great, and I loved the book overall, but I feel like the author needs to read more books from the period to get the usage and language correct.
The narrator is overdoing it. Her speech is overly elocuted, and mannerisms are exaggerated. She’s very good at differentiating voices though, which makes up for the other completely.
I recommend this book for its story, especially to those not familiar with British English of the period. There would be nothing to bother you, and so much to enjoy. I’ve inhaled all of the first four books and look forward to more.

Inspector Hemingway has his work cut out for him when a seemingly civilised game of Duplicate Bridge leads to a double murder. The crimes seem identical, but were they carried out by the same hand? Things become even more complicated when the fiancée of the inspector's young friend, Timothy Kane, becomes Hemingway's prime suspect. Kane is determined to prove the lady's innocence – but when he begins digging into her past, he finds it's more than a little bit shady.

One of my Favourite Heyer Novels, Badly Read.
Revisado: 01-18-19
Ulli is generally a sound reader, differentiating between characters well, and keeping things interesting, but she is so bad at accents, I really think she shouldn't attempt them. Her American accent in the previous book (They Found Him Dead is the story of when Timothy is a child and he helps Hemingway with his work) was just as bad, but not as grating, as the Scots Highland accent is normally attractive, and hers attempt is really ugly.
Other than that, the voices and narration are good, and I'm a fan of the novel itself. It's textbook Heyer mystery material, with good characters and plenty to think about. If you're just as happy to read it, I'd go for the ebook or print edition. If you can't tell Welsh from Scots, it'll probably not worry you to listen to Ulli butcher poor Sandy's accent :)

Great Aside From Incorrect Pronunciation
Revisado: 07-26-16
What did you love best about Light Thickens?
It's a great mystery, with well-rounded characters. Alleyn is not as prevalent as usual, but it's made to work with another character to the fore.
What other book might you compare Light Thickens to and why?
Any other Marsh, Christie, or James title. It's a classic murder mystery.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
I was really irritated that he had not made the slightest effort to get the Māori pronunciation even remotely correct. Normally Franks is really good, but the complete ignorance of one of the most easily mastered sets of sounds on the planet was really rubbish, especially given that there are resources for learning this readily available. A real let-down.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No.
Any additional comments?
Franks does great voices.

Tory Brennan, niece of acclaimed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (of the Bones novels and hit TV show), is the leader of a ragtag band of teenage "sci-philes" who live on a secluded island off the coast of South Carolina. When the group rescues a dog caged for medical testing on a nearby island, they are exposed to an experimental strain of canine parvovirus that changes their lives forever.

A wonderfully rich fancy from the creator of Temperance Brennan
Revisado: 03-14-16
I like escapism. It's what I look for in books, TV shows, and films. Virals is packed with crazy action, adventure, character, and humour. Lots of fun, and though it's tied into the Bones universe it's best read as a completely separate property. It's a fantasy rather than a science nerd-out, and while Reichs's talent continues in Virals, it's a tangential slide into a totally new genre. Enjoy it for what it is, and don't expect Bones.

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets 16-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

Good Story - Terrible Narration
Revisado: 10-21-15
Would you try another book from Ransom Riggs and/or Jesse Bernstein?
So long as Jesse doesn't attempt accents, I'd love to hear more. He's great in his own accent, but his British accents are absolutely abysmal! The book was great. I think I'll just grab the Kindle editions of the rest though. I don't think I can stand more of Jesse The Briton. It hurts.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I didn't have one. There are several great characters, though they're hard to get a read on, as their life experiences are terrible warped.
What didn’t you like about Jesse Bernstein’s performance?
His British accents were all absolutely awful. Painful. Grating. Completely ruined the talking book edition for me.
Did Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children inspire you to do anything?
Well, to switch to the Kindle editions, so I don't have to suffer for the stories any more.
Any additional comments?
The book is great. Go and buy an ebook edition, and leave the audio version to rot. That's really all it's good for. Jesse should stick to his own countrymen when reading character dialogue. He does well when representing his own speech.

A+ marriage of laughs, thrills, story, & narrator
Revisado: 04-01-15
Where does Midnight Riot rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I've listened to a LOT of audiobooks, so I couldn't give it a numbered ranking amongst the morass, but it's well above average. I'm buying the entire series. Does that answer your question.
What did you like best about this story?
Probably the humour, and the spit in your eye truths about human beings (not the supernatural stuff). It's got gritty cynicism perfectly matched with humour.
Which scene was your favorite?
I think to reveal a favourite scene would be to ruin it for a prospective reader. No. I won't answer that question.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Again, discussing a moment that particularly moved me will mean spoilers. Who comes up with these stupid questions?
Any additional comments?
This is a fun, silly, clever, well thought out romp through London and its surrounds, with a bit of magic to spice things up. I think it would be just as good if it was about a regular plain clothes rookie and his boss. The narrator is the perfect match for the material, and the material is a lot of fun. Worth a listen.

With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as the celebrated actor of film, television, and stage. At times suspenseful, at times deeply moving, but always incredibly brave and honest, Not My Father's Son is a powerful story of embracing the best aspects of the past and triumphantly pushing the darkness aside.

Even if he weren't a famous actor, he'd be a star.
Revisado: 03-28-15
Would you listen to Not My Father's Son: A Memoir again? Why?
I'm not sure. I listened to this entire book within a 24 hour period, rapt by his attitude and sweet wryness. I loved it, and am glad I purchased it, but I have no idea if I will feel the need to listen again.
Who was your favorite character and why?
To ask about characters in a non-fiction autobiographical work is absurd. This is a heartfelt and frank memoir, written and read by an intelligent, damaged, wonderful man, who has chosen to make lemonade from all the lemons thrown his way. Who else could it be but him?
What does Alan Cumming bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Himself. I'm glad he read it himself. He's a wonderful speaker, and it is, after all, his story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I alternately cried, giggled, signed, and frowned. Talk about a roller coaster. The most heart-rending moment was near the end though. You'll know it when you get to it. I don't wish to include spoilers.
Any additional comments?
This was an impulse buy, but there is no buyer's remorse. It's fantastic, and AC is too. Well worth a read, but while there are lots of highlights they are balanced by a lot of dark places.

But though the fighting's stopped, the war is far from over: it's just gone underground. Another good Halo story - pt 1 of Kilo 5
Revisado: 02-20-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
It's a good story. Most of them are, but this one really stands out because of Euan Morton, the narrator. This guy must be a decent actor. His accents and voices are brilliant, and distinct. He performs dialogue, rather than reading it. I have a feeling he's a Scott too, because his Scottish accents are spot on. His American voices aren't bad, and his British and Australian ones are fantastic. He also knows to pronounce the J in Mjölnir* as a "ye" sound, rather than a hard "je" sound. That bugs me in a number of the other Halo books. The Russian one I can't comment on. I only know one Russian, and he doesn't sound like Vas. Morton has also set up a new accent for the Sangheili, that works, if you ignore the fact that Morton doesn't have the four jaws required to be totally authentic :)*Said as "myerl-neer", where the first R is not prounounced.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Halo: Glasslands?
When the team is first "meeting" Naomi in her Mjölnir armour. Mal's reaction is gold.
Have you listened to any of Euan Morton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, much the same. He's a consistently good performer.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Why do the fields this review form presents change every time I edit my review?! I have to keep changing the content, as well as the errors! ARGH!
I don't do tag lines. Just read the damned book.
Any additional comments?
Yes, people reading this really should read The Thursday War and Mortal Dictata after it, in that order. The Kilo Five trilogy is not three stories. It's one in three volumes.
