Historia
On November 20, 1979, worldwide attention was focused on Tehran, where the Iranian hostage crisis was entering its third week. The same morning, the first of a new Muslim century, hundreds of gunmen stunned the world by seizing Islam's holiest shrine, the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Armed with rifles that they had smuggled inside coffins, these men came from more than a dozen countries, launching the first operation of global jihad in modern times.

Are you tired of feeling f*cked up? If you are, Gary John Bishop has the answer. In this straightforward handbook, he gives you the tools and advice you need to demolish the slag weighing you down and become the truly unf--ked version of yourself. "Wake up to the miracle you are," he directs. "Here's what you've forgotten: You're a f--king miracle of being." It isn't other people that are standing in your way; it isn't even your circumstances that are blocking your ability to thrive. It's yourself and the negative self-talk you keep telling yourself.

Another [edgy!?] self-help book!
Revisado: 10-30-19
I received the book as a gift via mail this summer. I drew a huge sigh! Put it aside. Thought it was not for me. Eventually, I got the audiobook. I started listening out of politeness. I also wanted to take break from the usual. Alas, these self-help books are not my bag. Honestly, the approach is effective and the author has many good points. The Scottish accent in the audio version is an added bonus. 😃. I am going to make a list of the most impactful phrases to keep near my workstation. They may come in handy.

Historia
A Washington Post reporter's intimate account of the fallout from the closing of a General Motors assembly plant in Janesville, Wisconsin - Paul Ryan's hometown - and a larger story of the hollowing of the American middle class. This is the story of what happens to an industrial town in the American heartland when its factory stills - but it's not the familiar tale. Most observers record the immediate shock of vanished jobs, but few stay around long enough to notice what happens next, when a community with a can-do spirit tries to pick itself up.

Lucid, sobering, and relatable economic analysis
Revisado: 10-14-19
We learned about this book in the Pitchfork Economics podcast. We read it right after Thomas Frank's Listen Liberal. This book dovetails nicely with it. Both of these are very accessible to a general audience.
The setting is the heart of former Speaker Paul Ryan's congressional district (Wisconsin's 1st).This books lays bare the many failures our current economic system. It also exposes the shocking lack of effective support available to our former manufacturing communities. Alas, neither party has made a difference. The stories were intimate and relatable.

It is a widespread belief among liberals that if only Democrats can continue to dominate national elections, if only those awful Republicans are beaten into submission, the country will be on the right course. But this is to fundamentally misunderstand the modern Democratic Party. Drawing on years of research and first-hand reporting, Frank points out that the Democrats have done little to advance traditional liberal goals: expanding opportunity, fighting for social justice, and ensuring that workers get a fair deal.

This is yet another authoritative work by Frank Thomas. Dr. Thomas is one of the keenest historians of his generation. This book could not possibly be more relevant today. No matter your political leanings, you will benefit greatly from reading this book. Cannot wait to read his next book. Enjoy!

Historia
It is now 100 years since drugs were first banned in the United States. On the eve of this centenary, journalist Johann Hari set off on an epic three-year, 30,000-mile journey into the war on drugs. What he found is that more and more people all over the world have begun to recognize three startling truths: Drugs are not what we think they are. Addiction is not what we think it is. And the drug war has very different motives to the ones we have seen on our TV screens for so long.

Fascinating, compelling and authoritative
Revisado: 09-14-19
As we make halting progress towards the full legalization of marihuana in the US, this book addresses the implications and blazes the way forward. This book exploded my mental block on the issue of drugs. I am a vastly more informed citizen/voter. This book will continue to guide my thinking on this issue for decades to come. If you spend any time thinking about our relationship with drugs, you need to read this book.

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

Gripping and relevant story
Revisado: 05-06-19
This was an endlessly fascinating story. I bought the book after reading that famous article on Wired magazine. It's easy to underestimate the Herculean task of sifting through that massive digital archive in order to construct a cohesive and enthralling tale. The issues addressed in this book are still very relevant (e.g., libertarian philosophy, legality/illegality, guilt/innocence, running enterprises, encryption, corruption, etc.). The book also addresses the War on Drugs. Alas, as the current opiod crisis convincingly demonstrates, our enforcement-heavy/exclusive approach is failing.

Kiese Laymon is a fearless writer. In his essays, personal stories combine with piercing intellect to reflect both on the state of American society and on his experiences with abuse, which conjure conflicted feelings of shame, joy, confusion, and humiliation. Laymon invites us to consider the consequences of growing up in a nation wholly obsessed with progress yet wholly disinterested in the messy work of reckoning with where we’ve been.

Most compelling and endearing!
Revisado: 04-24-19
I bought this book recently. So, customarily, it will be relegated to the bottom of the heap. Since I have an extensive reading list, it was going to be a long while before I got to it. However, the universe had other plans. I kept seeing references and mentions here and there. I felt compelled to read it next. As it happened, it was going to be a nice change from the previous book.
This book is magnificent! I laughed out loud and wept bitterly. There are several unforgettable and eminently quotable characters. There were several chapters I kept re-listening to because they were so rich in meaning and the writing was so transcendental. The author bared his soul. For this, I will be eternally grateful to him. Enjoy!

A sweeping narrative history of the events leading to 9/11, a groundbreaking look at the people and ideas, the terrorist plans and the Western intelligence failures that culminated in the assault on America. Lawrence Wright's remarkable book is based on five years of research and hundreds of interviews that he conducted in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sudan, England, France, Germany, Spain, and the United States.

Revisado: 04-15-19
I was sceptical at the beginning. I did not know the author. I bought it because this work was cited in a podcast about the subject. I was very impressed with how he dealt with this difficult, emotional, and wide ranging subject. This book allowed me to put all the facts I have learned here and there into perspective. It also greatly expanded my knowledge of the subject. The author weaves in tons of personal details. These details heightened my interest. I have ordered other books that expand on places, characters and events mentioned.

Long overdue and compelling work
Revisado: 02-17-19
As a world history buff, I have come across several references to the Mongol incursions into Europe. Until this book, I never came a cross a comprehensive work on the subject. In my opinion, this is the definitive treatment of the Mongol Empire and its legacy. A legacy that has helped shaped our modern world. In terms of their long-term impact, the Mongols are criminally underrated.

From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

Historical bravura!
Revisado: 01-09-19
Indubitably, this is one of the best and most comprehensive historical non-fiction works I have read/heard. Ms. Miles did a fabulous job in the narration. As a fairly recent immigrant, I found numerous parallels between my personal immigration journey and those described there in. If you have any interest/curiosity about The Great Migration, you must read/listen to this book.
