Historia
When a high-ranking officer gallops into the quiet Mistyvales, he brings a warning that shakes the countryfolk to their roots. But for Aedan, a scruffy young adventurer with veins full of fire and a head full of ideas, this officer is not what he seems. The events that follow propel Aedan on a journey that only the foolhardy or desperate would risk, leading him to the gates of the nation's royal academy - a whole world of secrets in itself. But this is only the beginning of his discoveries.

Too much real life fantasy added.
Revisado: 01-20-17
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. I will be returning this book and not purchasing the following ones.
What could Jonathan Renshaw have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Change the religious part. The writing in the book is good and the characters interesting. It does drag a little in the middle but has mostly good pacing. In fantasy there are often a number of different gods. They are to be expected. Within a fantasy, where the gods will actually show up and be active participants we can suspend reality and accept them. Renshaw can't seem to help bringing his own actual religion into the book. A scene towards the end of the book is in every way suposed to be a born-again christian accepting jesus fantasy moment. So much so that it breaks the entire rest of the book. There are subtle hints as to the eventual collapse into christian tropes, but wow! Its a real splash of cold water in the face. So if you're a christian and want to hear one of your favorite tropes redone in fantasy form then this is the book for you. As for me I will not be purchasing another Jonathan Renshaw book. Deaply dissapointing.
Have you listened to any of Tim Gerard Reynolds’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I've not heard any of his other performances, but I thought he did an excellent job on this book and he bumped up my otherwise low rating of the book.

Hecht champions doubt and questioning as one of the great and noble, if unheralded, intellectual traditions that distinguish the Western mind. From Socrates to Galileo and Darwin to Wittgenstein and Hawking, this is an account of the world's greatest intellectual virtuosos - who are also humanity's greatest doubters and disbelievers - and their attempts to reconcile the seeming meaninglessness of the universe with the human need for meaning.

Important
Revisado: 05-31-12
This is a history book. And though more entertaining than a typical history book, it is still a history book. That being said, it should be on every humanists digital bookcase. While Dawkins and Hitchens have provided you a reason to question your faith, Doubt: Gives you the history of brilliant people who have sought the answers before you. I find myself reliably returning to this book, and most certainly will for a long time.

Historia
Elliott Gould, Burt Reynolds, Meryl Streep, and a host of other celebrities read over 100 poems by four of America's greatest poets. Walt Whitman celebrates the brash and rugged individualism of his country in exuberant language. The spare, precise language of Emily Dickinson conveys her penetrating vision of the natural world and an acute understanding of the most profound human truths.

Painful
Revisado: 10-13-11
It is like someone found a beautiful and ancient persian rug, and, feeling that it wasn't quite enough on its own, decided to paint racing stripes on it. Narration - great. Quality - terrific Poems - wonderful (of coarse). All spoiled by that obnoxious music playing in the background. Seriously, who in their right minds, takes a lyrical art, an art that is demanding enough on the listener, and says lets put some loud complex violin music in the background!

Buddhism in a Christian Candy shell.
If you've read/listened to any eastern philosophy books then there will not be a lot of different material here. For the mainliners who have not, this book is a good start into a new philosophy.

Historia
Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal—including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world. Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want. But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other.

Excellent & well crafted story.
Revisado: 12-19-07
This trilogy is exceptional. A finely woven tale about a girl, and perhaps humanity itself, growing up. The characters are complex but well defined and the story is refreshingly different. Witches, clergy, Polar bears, & harpies all make appearances and all are presented with depth. An excellent & well crafted story.
