Historia
Angel knows all about pain. His mother died in this room. He's researched its history. Today he's come back to end it, no matter the cost, once and for all. Shyla, a plus-sized escort, thinks the stories Angel tells her can't be true. Secrets so vile, you won't want to let them inside you. But the Lonely Motel doesn't forget. It doesn't forgive. And it always claims its victim.

Sad male fantasy
Revisado: 02-03-25
it was just a tired cliche about incels without meaningful female, or maternal relationships, and hookers with hearts of gold. it kind of lends credence to the saying that men spend 9 mos inside their mother's body and the rest of their lives trying to get back in. Gross, pointless and sounds like a backward 7th grader made it up.
I read it only because it was on a list of shocking or horrifying books,it was really just scatological and silly. Apparently the " moral* of the story is that all of men's dysfunction and problematic behavior could be cured by women letting them into their lady parts one way or another. sigh

Engaging and funny
Revisado: 06-29-24
An amusing twist on the admittedly pretty crowded stage of vampire stories. But it was a good listen, the reader is great, unlike a lot of them, especially men who do cringy imitations of women and children's voices that make me want to skip past. Or the pretentiously stentorian announcer voices that just take away from the story. But the clever and comic writing of Christopher Moore has always been a favorite of mine and this production of his story is stellar.

With the redolent atmosphere of Ian Rankin and the spine-chilling characters of Thomas Harris, Mo Hayder's The Devil of Nanking, takes the reader on an electrifying literary ride from the palatial apartments of yakuza kingpins to deep inside the secret history of one of the twentieth century's most brutal events: the Nanking Massacre.

Very involved and twisty plot.
Revisado: 06-27-24
Intensely atmospheric and very creepy, with hints of the supernatural but mostly based on the real life nightmare story of the Japanese occupation of Nanking, worse than most of our imaginations can even conjure, or want to.

Historia
The year started badly and only got worse - blizzards, strikes, power cuts, and political unrest were the norm. For journalist Allie Burns, however, someone else's bad news was the unmistakable sound of opportunity knocking, and the year is ripe with possibilities. But Allie is a woman in a man's world. Desperate to get away from the "women's stories" the Glasgow desk keeps assigning her, she strikes up an alliance with wannabe investigative journalist Danny Sullivan. From the start, their stories create enemies.

Rather disappointing and tedious..
Revisado: 05-23-24
I found the main characters two dimensional and without much of a motivating force besides career ambition, or any kind of real inner life. The story seemed to be playing out in real time it was so dull, I felt like I'd actually been working, after listening to it for a few hours. I think the only thing that made me able to stick it out for that long, was the narrator who was really great and her Scottish accent and pronunciation of some kind of tongue twisty Scottish place names like *Sauchiehill and words for things we don't have in the states, like Irn Bru and square sausages.
* Had to guess at spelling.

Fascinating story of a truly evil man.
Revisado: 04-15-24
Story of a sadistic psychopath who lived a life of seeming banal normality as a bridge playing IT specialist with long term partners and old friends male and female, and a family of not much more than normal dysfunction.
He was a reliable employee, dutiful son and partner, whose only noticeable quirks were disappearing at random times and putting high mileage on company rental cars.
It appears that literally none of the people who knew him had any idea who he really was or what he was capable of, which is the most interesting thing about him.

Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

It's a solid mystery/ thriller that keeps you guessing up till the end, and then delivers a last surprise. Characters are believably likeable or really, really dislikeable. with enough villains to make it easy to believe that any of them is a murderer, and more than one is.

The evil that once coursed through Pine Deep has been replaced by cheerful tourists getting ready to enjoy the country’s largest Halloween celebration in what is now called “The Spookiest Town in America.”

it dragged a bit, but it started getting much more interesting towards the end. I wish male narrators would not put on sqeaky annoying voices when they read the female parts. its frankly somewhat offensive and make the female character seem like an annoying twit even if they are totally badass.

Pretty engaging mystery
Revisado: 08-31-22
The story is decent and the plot lines are quite good. There wasn't much character development tho, and I think a closer look at certain characters behavior would have elevated this to something closer to Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine level.
