a classic, of course

while I always enjoy most of the story, the chapters with poor editing are very distracting. it is disappointing that this has never been corrected, but it would be very easy: they're when Laurie is in Nice with Amy; a number of parts repeat.
Aside from that extreme annoyance, the story is exactly as one might expect: old-fashioned, a smidge preachy (but not even that bad) and nice happy endings all round.

Historia
Cults prey on the very attributes that make us human: our desire to belong, to find a deeper meaning in life, to live everyday with divine purpose. Their existence creates a sense that any one of us, at any time, could step off the cliff’s edge and fall into that daunting abyss of manipulation and unhinged dedication to a misplaced cause. Perhaps it’s this mindset that keeps us so utterly obsessed and desperate to learn more, or it’s that the stories are so bizarre and unsettling that we are simply in awe of the mechanics that make these infamous groups tick.

Disappointed

I didn't like the writing voice of the author; I've never listened to the associated podcast so maybe I should have before reading this, but his inconsistencies and lack of detail in some chapters were annoying and grating. I didn't feel like each cult got the same examination.
Additionally, this was a poorly done book. There are multiple pronunciation errors, including the reader mispronouncing "Nexium" in the Keith Raniere chapter. I don't know if this book just wasn't actually proofed or what happened, but that's incredibly poor quality.

Historia
The summer before his senior year in college, Greg Melville worked at the cemetery in his hometown, and thanks to hour upon hour of pushing a mower over the grassy acres, he came to realize what a rich story the place told of his town and its history. Thus was born Melville’s lifelong curiosity with how, where, and why we bury and commemorate our dead. Melville’s Over My Dead Body is a lively (pun intended) and wide-ranging history of cemeteries, places that have mirrored the passing eras in history but have also shaped it.

I loved each featured cemetery as a driving force behind each chapter and i thought the entire thing flowed well and had such interesting stories.
My only complaint is in Chapter 12, where there was some poor editing and the reader repeats one section like six times. Otherwise, I thought the production was great.

Historia
When Mouse’s dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother's house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be? Answer: pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is stuffed with useless rubbish. That would be horrific enough, but there’s more - Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather’s journal, which at first seems to be filled with nonsensical rants...until Mouse encounters some of the terrifying things he described for herself.

Thoughtful build to a chilling, exhilarating finale. Also, the dog lives.

A good spooky read

I read this book after Hollow Places and there are a few plot similarities that slowed me down. As well, the extensive coverage of The Green Book was kinda boring, frankly. But i love Kingfisher's storytelling and i would honestly listen to her books all day every day.
