This collection features Howard at his finest and Conan at his most savage. Truly heroic fantasy at its best, this volume contains "The Servants of Bit-Yakin", "Beyond the Black River", "The Black Stranger", "The Man-Eaters of Zamboula", and "Red Nails", which is perhaps Conan's most famous adventure.

The Narrator...
Revisado: 03-20-25
Conan is as great as ever. the Narrator on the other hand...
I actually like him. overall, I like him. he has a good voice and i enjoyed him in the Halo novels.
but he has a gaping flaw in that he just mispronounces the oddest of words, seemingly having never been corrected on it in his life.
"Mjölnir" For example, he pronounces like "Ma-jol-ner'
"sword" He pronounces like "Sward"
oddly enough, he will pronounce made up words in stories just fine. "Derketo" "Dagon" And "Bit Yakeen" but ask the man to pronounce some fairly common English words and...
it's not a huge issue admittedly. but it's definitely noticeable and it takes you out of it for a moment.

Great story, narrator faltered
Revisado: 03-06-25
the story continues to hold up, as the Roman Republic starts to crack apart.
but towards the last 3 hours, the Narrator's breathing could be clearly heard, and you could hear him taking a deep breath, drinking what is presumably water, smacking his lips and swallowing more often. which was a bit uncomfortable to say the least, and distracted from the story at times.

Historia
The Yellowstone super-eruption has put an end to modern civilization. As cities and countries continue to fall, the colony of Rivendell in the alternate Earth known as Outland looks more and more like the only real hope for humanity. But life in Rivendell isn’t getting any simpler, either. Bill and Kevin continue to discover new worlds; the population continues to rise; winter is approaching; and everyone has their own opinion about how things should be run.

a good story ruined by a bad message
Revisado: 10-15-24
this was my first introduction to Dennis, and it wasnt a great first impression.
the story has a great premise, but its bogged down by the cringe worthy "nerd culture" references (all of which I got, but didn't appreciate how poorly they were done. in a very "how do ya do, fellow kids?" manner) in combination with what must be Dennis' own political beliefs. because I doubt a writer would risk an audience on such insufferable and rather offensive takes, if they didn't believe them themselves.
others have called this book "ageist" and I won't disagree. despite being a 30 year old millennial, I found myself on the side of the older folks in the book, more often than not. The same position I found myself in as a reader, when listening to Beowulf's Children.
it's a mark of a poor writer with a bad message, when you have to write bigoted or insufferable characters, just so your own bigoted and insufferable characters can look good by comparison. The book lays in on the concept of a Geriocracy, a society run by the old. But while it does effectively criticize it, it also fails to adequately defend it. turning the story into a one sided lecture, rather than a philosophical work, which I'm sure he was hoping it would come off as. failing to take into account the fact you tend grow in wealth, knowledge, skill and experience as you grow older. Conn IgguIden's Athens series touches on this in a much smaller way, but far better. "The youth of Athens are too hot blooded, trash and inexperienced to lead. they must reach the age of 35 to earn their place in politics. But without the courage, drive and ambition of youth, society would stagnate and every generation would grow weak hiding away from the sun."
meanwhile, Dennis' take is, ironically despite his age, "shut up old man, this is our time and you're too out of touch (with the apocalypse!?) to know how things should be done. you'll just ruin it like the evil patriarchal capitalist white society of the old world!"
it's so telling then, that Dennis espouses socialism just a bit, while decaying capitalism, and writing about the students creating a socialist-capitalist synergy state, praising china in the process. showing Dennis has a poor understanding of all topics involved. while perhaps accidentally also writing his main cast as "top of the hierarchy know it alls" who have a command control of their little state until they dont.
I'm a nerd, but I'm also far better versed in the political subject matter Dennis tried to tackle here, and I didn't come for politics, I came for a fun story. I found myself rewriting half the book in my head as I went.
if you're into Dennis' politics, I'm betting you'll enjoy the book. as with most works corrupted with politics, it will be divided down tribal lines. if you agree, you'll think it's awesome and not criticize it. if you don't, you'll criticize it more, and either think it's okay, or terrible
it's okay. Just grit your teeth at the annoying bits.

DONT buy this SCAM
Revisado: 06-20-23
this is NOT the story of Cu, this is is ripoff, and I want my money back.
this is some heavily abridged version of the Legend of Cu, and it ends halfway through his actual tale at his marriage to Emer, with "and they both lived happily ever after until they died." No, they didn't. no mention of the Tain, the Morrigan, his battles with queen Mhaev, none of it.
this is like ending the tale of Herakles after his first trial. don't buy this. the only good thing about it was the reader

Historia
Genghis Khan was born Temujin, the son of a khan, raised in a clan of hunters migrating across the rugged steppe. Shaped by abandonment and betrayal, Temujin endured, driven by a singular fury: to survive in the face of death, to kill before being killed, and to conquer enemies who could come without warning from beyond the horizon. Through a series of courageous raids, Temujin's legend grew until he was chasing a vision: to unite many tribes into one, to make the earth tremble under the hoofbeats of 1,000 warhorses, to subject all nations and empires to his will.

great historical *fiction*
Revisado: 09-13-20
A good book on Genghis, but entirely omits Jamukha from history, which is disappointing. therefore the book makes for a great basic understanding of Temujin's early life and mindset. But the changes and omission of such a major player in Temujin's life make it an unreliable source for showing off your knowledge of the great mongol conqueror.
