Historia
This is DC Smith's third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

Gripping and Introspective
Revisado: 03-06-25
Another wonderful story narrated by the inimitable Gildart Jackson. Even though there isn’t the traditional ‘action’ the pacing is brilliant. One of those “I’ll just listen to one more chapter” and you’re suddenly at the end. Smith never fails to disappoint. A quiet philosopher with a lovely dry sense of humour.
Gloria Butterfield is a wonderful character.

A chilling complex tale
Revisado: 12-13-24
Galbraith/Rowling knocks it out of the park once again. I know there are some who find 34 hours long, but I did not want it to end. The author constructs a clever complex story, with layered characters, moments of humour, and moments of terror. And, if you wonder how people end up in cults this story definitively explains that. I am looking forward to the next book very much indeed.

One of the Best in the Series
Revisado: 10-11-23
Sad to hear this is the end of the DCI Gillard series, particularly since this is one of the best and there's a lovely set up for cold case investigations.
As usual Marston York does a great job.
It isn't too difficult to figure out what is happening and who, but it doesn't detract from the story at all. In fact it's fun to see the police work to that conclusion. No unbelievable twist at the end, just good solid storytelling.

Historia
Jo told him the phone call had been about a woman who wanted to have her husband declared dead. Smith thought for a moment and then said, 'Hmm. There must be a few million women in this country who feel like that. I take it her husband's been missing for a while and she's decided it's time to move on. In the absence of a body, which is always a nuisance, she wants Diver and Diver to confirm there's no proof he's alive. And I've told Jason a dozen times I'm not getting involved in anything matrimonial. I have enough trouble sorting out my own relationships.'

Another Exceptional Book
Revisado: 09-05-23
I am a huge Peter Grainger fan, and enjoy Kings Lake Investigations and Willow and Lane, but my favourite is DC Smith. Another book that kept my attention with its story, characterization and language. And there's brilliant subtle humour.
I'm hoping we'll get more of Polly in the next one,
As usual the narration is perfect. Gildart Jackson does a wonderful job of bringing the story and characters to life. I do my best to savour these novels, trying hard not to binge and I'm always rather sad when I finish a Peter Grainger book, which, in my reading world, is the mark of exceptional.

Superb
Revisado: 02-05-23
An intricate mystery, with the continued development of Strike and Robin's relationship. The author is a truly exceptional writer, with the ability to blend several elements seamlessly. I savoured this book, listening when I could give it my full attention, and was sorry when it ended. The 32 hours went by far too quickly. It is true that the reading of online media took me a few minutes to get used to, but nothing that should put anyone off. The online media element is essential to the story, and the narration by Robert Glenister is as skillful as ever. Looking forward to the next book. I hope it isn't too long of a wait.

Historia
Joey Green has returned to Beaufort, South Carolina, with its palmettos and shrimp boats, to look after his ailing father, who is succumbing to dementia, while his overstressed mother takes a break. Marshall Green’s short-term memory has all but evaporated, but his oldest memories are more vivid than ever. His mind keeps slipping backward in time, retreating into growing up in Beaufort as a boy. At first, this seems like a blessing of sorts, but Joey grows increasingly anxious as his father’s hallucinatory arguments with figures from his youth begin to hint at deadly secrets.
