The BEST Resource on College Admissions
Revisado: 12-02-24
This is your one-stop resource for all things college admissions and financial aid! The host, Mark Stucker, is an excellent, knowledgeable, and accessible host who is not afraid to tackle tough issues or dig deeply into answering the relevant questions of the day. In fact, the entire YCBK team are experts in their respective areas and offer interesting, informative perspectives. As a parent who recently went through the college process with her eldest for the first time, I came to rely on the podcasts and eagerly looked forward to Mondays and Thursdays when the podcast dropped. This podcast helped me understand the current admissions climate and be a better support for my child. There isn’t an issue or topic that has not been previously addressed so make sure to take a look at the back catalogue and the website.

Beautifully written and poignant novel
Revisado: 03-14-21
This was an amazing novel that knocked me out— with the main character’s tragic life and the author’s another-level writing. The performance was also pitch perfect. It is is tough story to listen to but do compelling that I could not put down.

Historia
How to Write an Autobiographical Novel is the author's manifesto on the entangling of life, literature, and politics, and how the lessons learned from a life spent reading and writing fiction have changed him. In these essays, he grows from student to teacher, reader to writer, and reckons with his identities as a son, a gay man, a Korean American, an artist, an activist, a lover, and a friend. He examines some of the most formative experiences of his life and the nation's history.

Great Re-telling of The Tempest
Revisado: 03-05-21
Learned a lot about The Tempest and enjoyed Atwood’s characteristically excellent writing. The audio book was also exceptionally well narrated, especially the rapping scenes!

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Eye opening
Revisado: 02-17-21
This is detailed, well-researched book that brings home the point in many differ ways the US social structure is stratified in a “caste” system. There are comparisons to the Indian caste system as well as comparison to the social hierarchy during the Nazi regime. This is well-narrated and gives you so much to think about long after you read it. Plus, if you liked Einstein before, you will love him after reading this book.

Solid Debut Novel
Revisado: 01-04-21
I finished The Last Story of Mina Lee, a novel by Nancy Jooyoun Kim (also a Reese September 2020 pick). It’s a bit of a thriller/mystery, and I would say it was solid on this front and a good glimpse into the lives of an immigrant Korean mother and her Americanized daughter, as she investigates her mom’s mysterious death and learns of her secret past. There were many parts I enjoyed, but ultimately, it did not quite have the emotional pull that I thought it would have. I attribute that to the fact that this was a debut novel. I look forward to seeing her future works. The performance by the narrator was very good.

Heartbreaking book

Loved the book, the writing and the narration. It is ultimately a story of parental grief and it is well told and grounded in reality. I also love some of the historical details that are woven into the plot. Highly recommend.

Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.

This is one of my favorites this year. Not only timely with respect to the pandemic but also well-written. Love the references to King Lear and Star Trek. The observations are keen and the story had me hooked from the beginning.

Stick with it and don’t give up like I almost did
Revisado: 10-16-20
It is absolutely the case that listening to this book was better than reading it. The performances were nuanced and helped me with the understanding of the book. People either really love it or hate it, and I’m in the “love it” camp. The book lingered for days in my mind and because I was reading it for a book club, I listened to it again.
