Historia
Austin Channing Brown’s first encounter with a racialized America came at age seven, when she discovered her parents named her Austin to deceive future employers into thinking she was a white man. Growing up in majority-white schools and churches, Austin writes, “I had to learn what it means to love blackness,” a journey that led to a lifetime spent navigating America’s racial divide as a writer, speaker, and expert helping organizations practice genuine inclusion.

Like Going To The Most Pleasant Dr. Visit
Revisado: 08-30-18
What do you do, when you know you're sick and you're scared of going to the doctor because the shots might be painful? You go to a doctor that can diagnose your element and has the gentlest bedside manner. This is what the author does when describing America's need for recognizing racial disparity and determining how we move forward with dignity and grace.

Superstar comedian and Hollywood box-office star Kevin Hart turns his immense talent to the written word by writing some words. Some of those words include: the, a, for, above, and even even. Put them together and you have the funniest, most heartfelt, and most inspirational memoir on survival, success, and the importance of believing in yourself since Old Yeller.

Historia
This lush novel, set in 1766 England and America, evokes an era ripe with riot and revolution, from the teeming streets of London to the sprawling grounds of a Virginia plantation. Mack McAsh burns with the desire to escape his life of slavery in Scottish coal mines while Lizzie Hallim is desperate to shed a life of sheltered subjugation to her spineless husband. United in America, their only chance for freedom lies beyond the Western frontier - if they're brave enough to take it.

Historia
Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.

Historia
The "maddog" murderer who is terrorizing the Twin Cities is two things: insane and extremely intelligent. He kills for the pleasure of it and thoroughly enjoys placing elaborate obstacles to keep police befuddled. Each clever move he makes is another point of pride. But when the brilliant Lieutenant Lucas Davenport, a dedicated cop and a serial killer's worst nightmare, is brought in to take up the investigation, the maddog suddenly has an adversary worthy of his genius.

Classic Prey...
Revisado: 03-21-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Of course, having read at least half of the "Prey" series, I found it funny that I had never read the original, first one "Rules of Prey". I naturally made comparisons to the latter works which were much more put together and less simplistic than this one (as expected). The only thing I would change was the droning on about the main characters' interest in gaming. I felt as if I was being given the highlight of a Dungeons and Dragons tournament; didn't make for interesting imagery and it made the book feel draggy at points.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I wouldn't have changed anything other than to leave out the gaming talk. John Sanford really comes into his own and begins to master his craft in the latter books, but this one fit the bill as a starter.
Have you listened to any of Richard Ferrone’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I love Richard Ferrone's husky, Jersey-Italian style reading of gritty cops and "broads"! You can tell he's having a lot of fun with it here- maybe more than usual. It made me wonder if this was his first recording for the "Prey" series.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
I would see it on television, yes.
Any additional comments?
John Sanford is a class detective mystery story teller and makes it very sexy- good light reading!

Epic and X-rated
Revisado: 02-28-14
Where does The Pillars of the Earth rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I've only listened to five total (including this one). This one was the longest with the largest number of characters. By far, this was my favorite narrator!
If you’ve listened to books by Ken Follett before, how does this one compare?
I preferred "A Dangerous Fortune". That novel showed Follett's maturity as a writer; the story was neater, he didn't drone on for too long harping on one particular character motivation or a particular object description. He was able to capture the atmosphere with more alacrity as opposed to listing off details like a set list for a play.
Which character – as performed by John Lee – was your favorite?
Prior Phillip, most definitely. The deep timbre of his voice and the range of gentleness to fierceness was as rich as gourmet French food.
If you could rename The Pillars of the Earth, what would you call it?
The Sin of Pride
Any additional comments?
I'd stress that ANYONE who has endured trauma (especially sexual trauma) or is sensitive to graphic descriptions of violence, or takes umbrage with characters of faith/religion acting in contrast with their beliefs to take much caution in undertaking this book. As a believer in Christ, I was not offended by the latter; I know there are people who don't take the heart of their belief seriously and it comes out in the form of HUGE hypocrisy. That said, as Follett mentioned in the forward, he's not a believer so it must be noted that his motivations behind portraying such characters in that light are a bit dubious. As for the violence, well, Mr. Follett is consistent with that in most of his books; it's mostly used to show the connection between characters' motivations and how they lead to very specific actions in a detail that is almost painstaking. It's both fascinating and repugnant at the same time, and I'd venture that a better writing could do without such explicit detail and still get the point across- but to each his own!
