Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Historia
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

Bravery and Self Acceptance
Revisado: 12-10-22
Hearing Viola’s voice telling her story made it more compelling. We all have stories to tell as women of color of those times. Viola’s bravery in sharing and pushing through her fears and obstacles was inspirational and motivational.

Reflective Piece of Writing
Revisado: 12-05-18
I really enjoyed reading/listening to a book in which diverse cultures are visited. I was anxious to listen daily to Ng’s story of this family. My take away was the parenting. There was a great deal of reflection being in a bi-racial marriage with children

Historia
Reeling from a traumatic break-in, Emma wants a new place to live. But none of the apartments she sees are affordable or feel safe. Until One Folgate Street. The house is an architectural masterpiece: a minimalist design of pale stone, plate glass, and soaring ceilings. But there are rules. The enigmatic architect who designed the house retains full control: no books, no throw pillows, no photos or clutter or personal effects of any kind. The space is intended to transform its occupant—and it does.

Twist and Turns
Revisado: 06-11-18
What a page turner. Each character came alive as I read. I imagined bumping into Vanessa, Sam, Richard or Emma as I walked in NY. My favorite character, Richard became my worst. This book empowers women to takes close look at abuse, both physically and mentally. I would very much like my book club members to read this book. It would open much discussion.
