Historia
As the Great Blizzard of 1888 cripples the vast machinery that is New York City, heiress Prudence MacKenzie sits anxiously within her palatial Fifth Avenue home waiting for her fiance's safe return. But the fearsome storm rages through the night. With daylight, more than 200 people are found to have perished in the icy winds and treacherous snowdrifts. Among them is Prudence's fiancé - his body frozen, his head crushed by a heavy branch, his fingers clutching a single playing card, the ace of spades.

Although predictable for the genre, this was a good tale with all the requisite elements and a few twists and turns.

Historia
For Detective Sam Porter, the words "Father, forgive me" conjure memories long forgotten; a past intentionally buried. For Anson Bishop, these three words connect a childhood to the present as he unleashes a truth concealed for decades. Found written on cardboard near each body, these words link multiple victims to a single killer - discovered within minutes of each other in both Chicago and South Carolina - clearly connected yet separated by impossible miles.

Twists and turns
Revisado: 03-19-25
I had to read the final installment, but I’ll admit I found it dragged a bit, mainly because the contrivance of the diaries was wearing thin by the end of the second book. You have to be willing to seriously suspend your disbelief to buy this convoluted plot. Still, it was engaging enough to keep me listening.

Historia
Joe Pickett's in his last week as the temporary game warden in the town of Baggs, Wyoming, but there have been strange things going on in the mountains, and his conscience won't let him leave without checking them out: reports of camps looted, tents slashed, elk butchered. And then there's the runner who simply vanished one day. Joe doesn't mind admitting that the farther he rides, the more he wishes he could just turn around and go home.

Good performance
Revisado: 02-16-25
The preaching and increasingly right wing propagandizing as the series progressed put me off. Joe, already the poster boy for bad decisions, was likable if not entirely believable, but in this book, his stubbornness and self righteousness were just too much. Good narration though.

Historia
A young woman's body is discovered on a deserted footpath. It seems like a simple crime for DCI Sophie Allen and her team to solve. But not when the victim's mother is found strangled the next morning. The case grows more complex as DCI Sophie Allen discovers that the victims had secret histories, involving violence and intimidation. There's an obvious suspect, but Detective Allen isn't convinced. Could someone else be lurking in the shadows, someone savagely violent, looking for warped revenge?

The Center by Saul Herzog is the stunning eighth installment in the series that has taken the publishing industry, and Hollywood rights departments, by storm. This dazzling tour de force is a full standalone novel. From the mind of one of the most creative and versatile writers working in America today, this book will surely go down as a classic of the spy thriller genre.

I loved the first seven, but…
Revisado: 01-10-25
I gave all the first seven books a solid 5 stars, but this one didn’t quite work for me. First, I’m not a fan of prequels, especially one as short as this one. Even though I still love Lance, I felt cheated. All of this could have been worked into the first seven books or even left out, but more importantly, it felt like a lot of revisionist history happening, which is fine, except that it did nothing to advance the plot or my understanding of the characters.

I don’t know why I chose the book or why I stuck with it since I try to avoid stories involving South American drug cartels. This one was far too long, lacking focus, and filled with extraneous detail.

Historia
Revellers are flocking into Greenborough for the yearly Dark Greenborough Festival, a three-day event celebrating local folklore, superstition, and the darker side of life. What the public doesn't know is that there has been a warning sent to the police, saying that Greenborough will be a very dangerous place this year. The anonymous letter ends with the Latin phrase, Mors certa, hora incerta: Death is certain, the hour uncertain.

Not the best in the series so far
Revisado: 09-03-24
I am gradually becoming accustomed to the voice given to Nikki. I’m not talking about the accent, but the voice quality itself. The narrator, I think, does a really good job on the other characters, but there is just something super annoying about Nikki’s voice. That said, I obviously have kept listening for several books now. This time, however, I was really really annoyed by how sanctimonious Nikki has become. I also found the plot less tightly woven than usual.

Obsession
Revisado: 07-23-24
Yes, it’s a heartbreaking love story. Of sorts. But it is also, and, for me, a sad story of lifelong obsession. I was able to put together many of the puzzle pieces, and predict some of the twists, though fortunately not all or I’d have stopped listening half way through this very long tale. Yes, it’s worth a credit because Chris Whitaker certainly can write and the narrator is excellent.

Somehow I got through..,
Revisado: 07-04-24
These three books, 4-6, were a struggle to finish. I found it increasingly difficult to care about the drug world and its scummy characters or about what happened to Damien. If there’s a bad decision floating around the universe chances are excellent that it will find Damien Drake to breathe life into it.
