I loved this. There were a few sections that felt trite compared to the intensity of the rest of the story. I loved the parallel elements and the big moving themes.

Historia
For GBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton, McAlpine Lodge seems like the ideal getaway to celebrate their honeymoon. Set on a gorgeous, off-the-grid mountaintop property, it’s the perfect place to unplug and reconnect. Until a bone-chilling scream cuts through the night. Mercy McAlpine, the manager of the Lodge, is dead. With a vicious storm raging and the one access road to the property washed out, the murderer must be someone on the mountain. But as Will and Sara investigate the McAlpine family and the other guests, they realize that everyone here is lying.

Not my favorite Karin Slaughter…
Revisado: 09-11-24
But I still love listening to Kathleen Early! This story felt unnecessarily convoluted to me. She’s also making Sarah more and more annoying as the series goes on. Still 4 stars though, because I’m so loyal to Will Trent.

So glad I stuck with it
Revisado: 07-28-24
This was a slow starter for me, as many character-driven books are. But in the end it was worth it. It probably could have been about 20% shorter, but it’s still in the running for one my favorites this year. A beautiful and complex epic tale of relationships and love, with a slow burn of a mystery in the background.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Eh. Not as Good as Stillhouse Lake
Revisado: 11-16-23
I really disliked the sections of the book told from the kids’ points of views. They felt oddly both too mature and exaggeratedly immature at the same time. And it felt like there were too many issues that could have been avoided with some basic open honest communication. Something you’d think they would have learned by this point. I still finished it, but I had to listen at 1.3x to stay interested.

Historia
Masterfully blending elements of psychological suspense and true crime, Jessica Knoll—bestselling author of Luckiest Girl Alive and the writer behind the Netflix adaptation starring Mila Kunis—delivers an “unflinching and evocative” (Laura Dave, New York Times bestselling author) thriller in Bright Young Women. The book opens on a Saturday night in 1978, hours before a soon-to-be-infamous murderer descends upon a Florida sorority house with deadly results. The lives of those who survive, including a sorority president and key witness, Pamela Schumacher, are forever changed.

So Glad I Listened
Revisado: 11-03-23
I thought this book was much better than the author’s first. And much more complex. I was worried that hearing Sutton Foster as the reader would lessen the experience but she was truly the PERFECT person to give me a picture of Pamela in my mind. Very sad it’s over!

I did finish it…
Revisado: 10-13-23
Which is why I gave it 2 stars. The story was twisted enough that I wanted to find out the ending. But that’s the extent of my praise. It’s the first book by Colleen Hoover that I’ve read, safe to say it will be the last. She lost me forever when she set a scene in NYC at a Steak n Shake. While there was in fact a single SnS location in NYC for a short 5 year period that could theoretically have been when the action was occurring, it’s absurd that she couldn’t have thought of a more realistic setting for the scene. Similarly the reference to Target in VT. While there is a single VT Target, it clearly felt like a paid brand placement opportunity. Just not my cup of tea.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

The beginning felt slow, but by 2 hours in I was hooked. Maura Tierney did an incredible job bringing the characters to life, but she was given stellar material to work with. I bawled for the entire last few hours.
