I was disappointed with this book. It seemed to ramble on from one subject to another and took up a whole new story line toward the end.

Historia
Nobody knows the people of Wooster, Ohio, better than switchboard operator Vivian Dalton, and she’d be the first to tell you that. She calls it intuition. Her teenage daughter, Charlotte, calls it eavesdropping. Vivian and the other women who work at Bell on East Liberty Street connect lines and lives. They aren’t supposed to listen in on conversations, but they do, and they all have opinions on what they hear - especially Vivian.

I did not enjoy this read. The characters were far too prideful and self-absorbed.

Family moments
Revisado: 08-20-24
My favorite read is one of interactions in families- problems, resolutions, bad times good times, but always a satisfying ending because the family members love each other. This story touched my heart and I would recommend it to anyone who loves stories of families.

Historia
Twenty-one-year-old Jenilee Lane's dreams are as narrow as the sky is wide. She doesn't imagine any good could come out of the tornado that has ripped across the Missouri farmland where she's made her home. But some inner spark compels her to take action. To rescue her elderly neighbor, Eudora Gibson, from the cellar in which she's been trapped. To make her way to the nearby town of Poetry, where the townspeople have begun to gather in the only building left standing. To collect from the devastated landscape fragments of life that lie strewn about in the tornado's wake.

Revisado: 02-20-24
I love a good story about families. In tending roses I was rewarded with a very sweet story that will stay with me a long time. I thought the author did an excellent job of portraying Grandma Rose in her last days. The character was realistic, had spunk and was lovable.

Historia
>When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

Historia
The Gilded Age is the collaborative work of Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner that satirized the era that followed the Civil War. This period is often referred to as the “Gilded Age” because of this book. The corruption and greed that was typical of the time is exemplified through two fictional narratives: one, of the Hawkins, a poor family from Tennessee that tries to persuade the government to purchase their seventy-five thousand acres of unimproved land.

This has been my favorite Kathryn Hughes book. A story set mostly in a mental institution, a young nurse and young female patient form a bond. The nurse leaves the institution soon after the patient gives birth, but not before leaving her a note that will someday change her life.

Historia
In the inhospitable lands of the Utah Territory, during the winter of 1888, thirty-seven-year-old Deborah Tyler waits for her husband, Samuel, to return home from his travels as a wheelwright. It is now the depths of winter, Samuel is weeks overdue, and Deborah is getting worried. Deborah lives in Junction, a tiny town of seven Mormon families scattered along the floor of a canyon, and she earns her living by tending orchards and making work gloves. Isolated by the red-rock cliffs that surround the town, she and her neighbors live apart from the outside world.

Revisado: 05-12-22
Not knowing much about Mormons, especially the first who traveled east to Utah, the idea of this novel intrigued me. I found the plot realistic and believable, the characters rich and the narrative perfect for this book. I greatly enjoyed it and will read more of Ann Weisgarber’s work.
