Historia
Darkness approaches Dominicus Prime, a literal Season of Night that brings with it portents, madness and strange happenings. Standing alone as a beacon against the darkness is the Monastery of the Last Candle, a temple to the holy light of the Emperor. As the bishops and the cardinals vie for power and influence, a crisis looms among the Pilgrim Drift who are starving in their droves. Discord is rife, and there are whispers of a rising cult, one committed to blood and horror.

more twists than lumbard street
Revisado: 12-24-24
this story has potential but the author tends to stick to very twisty/windy stories that are pretty difficult to keep track of. this is one of those stories. makes the listener wanna have an aneurysm.

leader obsessed with religion to zealotry levels
Revisado: 11-13-24
the story becomes predictable fairly early on and the b plot of inquisitors is pretty much sidelined mid way through. the general of the army basically is the only one out of everyone to be "that" fanatical with no distinction to others who are also worshipers of the emporer. dropping nukes seemed like a careless decision. overall the story is okay but becomes pretty linear as in "ah I know what happens next".

Revisado: 10-04-24
not a bad audiobook, a bit dry in the beginning but it picks up midway through. I submitted a review prior but relistened to it and wanted to change my opinion.

baited with gaz
Revisado: 04-19-24
a lot of nothing happens for the most part, insert generic "everybody dies as always" with the space Marines. there's a monologue from a dark angel about why they're so much better but each astartes in each story dies without learning a lesson or their squad mates learning anything. it's redundantly repetitive and repetitively redundant. there's very little gaz in the beginning and end, that's it.
listen if you're a die hard DA fan, otherwise avoid the purchase.

Horror without the horror
Revisado: 03-23-24
if you're looking for a book to advance the plot of 40k (41k?), this isn't it. it's a suspense horror but fails to encapsulate the horror element at quite a few turns. it's an okay listen for "crew like" horror.

the character yoncie was painful to listen to each time, for a number of reasons. the voice actor for yoncie is incredibly too high pitched for the voice, then the "papa, mama" stuff is incredibly creepy, no other kids ever talked like that in any other book. I felt nyself using the "skip 30 seconds" feature more and more to just overall avoid the yoncie sections. I was actively wishing the sons of sect would take her and that would be the end of her character.

story is okay, narration sounded a bit whiny a bit
Revisado: 09-30-23
the story was alright, tyranids so you know everyone is gonna die except like 1 person.
the only thing that rubbed me the wrong way was some of the characters were really "whiney". these humans made to sound so poor, dainty, and pathetic but it goes too far and you get this nasally feeling of irritation Everytime it flashes to the humans perspectives. it became really difficult not to speed through the human chapters because of the voice. tbh we all know all of most of the humans die in tyranid stories so their B plot story really doesn't matter.
I've read and now listed to most of games workshop black library books but this one was quite difficult to finish.
I found myself wishing the ultra Marines would embody some black Templar ideology with the humans and silence them lol.

excellent story, except...
Revisado: 09-26-23
love the narration and story.
the only complaint I have is (spoiler below, do not read ahead if you want to avoid the last 10 minutes of the audio book!!)
the priest had to inject himself at the end and get multiple main characters killed. it was such a random left turn in the story, then the priest demanding to take point in an active war zone while looking for civilians, what? it's like the story went from a 9.9/10 to 1/10, the basic "quick kill off a few characters" move by randomly injecting iotani was really frustrating, especially at the end. it left a bad taste in my mouth for the totality of the book.
overall - great story in gaunts ghosts, minus the heavy left turn at the end that made absolutely no sense logic wise and story wise. iotani did the exact same thing in the last two books and the ghosts told him no, why now did they allow it and then subsequently kill off two characters in 45 seconds.
