Historia
When Catherine Morland, a country clergyman's daughter, is invited to spend a season in Bath with the fashionable high society, little does she imagine the delights and perils that await her. Captivated and disconcerted by what she finds, and introduced to the joys of "Gothic novels" by her new friend, Isabella, Catherine longs for mystery and romance. When she is invited to stay with the beguiling Henry Tilney and his family at Northanger Abbey, she expects mystery and intrigue at every turn.

Delightful satire
Revisado: 06-18-23
Jane Austen’s gothic humor and mockery of societal conventions are on keen display in this short novel, which she wrote when she was still so young.

Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

There are dozens of courses in this presentation. Men overwhelmingly dominate these “Great Courses.”men. Even books written by women are presented by men. Who picked these men? Why does this company feel that only men should be allowed to provide their opinions to a broad audience? When will this tyranny end?

Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Fascinating book spoiled by the narrator’s tone
Revisado: 05-09-21
The great research for this book is notable, and the book had to have been revised on deadline for the latest COVID news. Had the narrator just read the book as written, the book would’ve been scary enough, but she felt the need to inject outrage and indignance throughout. It was unnecessary and distracting.

Historia
The disregard of a dying woman's bequest, a girl's attempt to help an impoverished clerk, and the marriage of an idealist and a materialist intersect at an estate called Howards End. There, the lives of three families become entangled. As chance brings them together, societal conventions come into question as does the ownership of Howards End. Through the fate of the estate - as well as the lives of the families who are affiliated with it - Forster creates a brilliant parallel to the fate of English society itself.

In the most ambitious one-volume American history in decades, award-winning historian Jill Lepore offers a magisterial account of the origins and rise of a divided nation. In riveting prose, These Truths tells the story of America, beginning in 1492, to ask whether the course of events has proven the nation's founding truths or belied them.

Outstanding writing and research; poorly narrated
Revisado: 01-26-19
I tried my best to listen to the entire book, which I found very compelling and well written, as is to be expected from Jill Lepore. But the manner in which she reads her book is hard to tolerate. She reads her own text calmly, thoughtfully, and authoritatively. When it comes to reading quoted material, her voice and tone change completely and the narration becomes shrill, very rushed and breathless, and almost unbearable to listen to. This distracts from the excellent content. Regrettably, I could not finish listening to the book because of this. I might have to borrow a copy from a library if I want to finish the book.
