A+++ across the board. This may just be my favorite from this author, but it's really hard to choose. Great work as usual.

Simi prayed to the gods, once. Now she serves them as Mami Wata—a mermaid—collecting the souls of those who die at sea and blessing their journeys back home. But when a living boy is thrown overboard, Simi goes against an ancient decree and does the unthinkable—she saves his life. And punishment awaits those who dare to defy the gods.

I follow this narrator wherever she goes and stumbled upon the author for the first time. There is so much packed into one story (in a very good way). I'm excited to see book two already waiting for me. Outstanding narratoion as usual. Love the story, the characters (all unique with their own challenges, gifts and voices. The world building is incredible. Love all of it!

Outstanding Narrator Performance!
Revisado: 06-18-24
This wasn't just a great work of fiction. The audiobook was an experience. I mean, wow! She brought every character and scene to life. I giggled with her. I nearly cried with her. I feared for her. Whew!
I would love nothing more than to go into detail about scenes and action that kind of blew me away, but I hate spoilers and wouldn't want to ruin it for anyone else.
What a brilliant storyteller this author is. I can't express how much of a kick I got out of an old stuffy legend being bent, twisted and reshaped to her will, then made new into something completely unfathomable.... to "some" folks anyway. 😂

Narrator Ruined an Mediocre Story
Revisado: 06-12-24
It's totally understandable if the original narrator wasn't available, but come on! Was it an issue with budget? What in the world? How do so many characters suddenly have bad Spanish accents (formerly bad African accents, but we could at least be consistent)? This narrator didn't even try. Did the author listen to this before signing off on this performance?
Speaking of the author, my gosh. It was incredibly annoying having to listen to this self loathing, self-blaming character for so many chapters. It's such a contradiction. She was tricked, along with all others of her kind BY the first born. Yet she's completely removed blame? So many inconsistentancies in the story that I just can't finish it.
I wish I could get my credit back.

Historia
Caroline Wilton has no time for romance. She’s too busy running her family’s bar to even think about dating. She’s also one of Starfall Point’s resident witches, responsible for keeping the local ghost population in check. But even the most magical of witches can use a shoulder to lean on, which is what happens when Ben Hoult, the handsome doctor she never quite got over, walks back into her life. Ben is a single dad now, and as he and Caroline reconnect, they discover that they both have a knack for helping and protecting the people near and dear to them.

Meh... at least it was free
Revisado: 05-21-24
The narrator for Ben was VERY annoying. In fact, it took longer to listen to this mediocre work of fiction (at best) all the way through because I kept turning it off every time a new chapter for Ben began. I mean, ugh! The person described in the story didn't even match the voice. The fake accent... just absolutely ruined it for me. I wonder why the author chose that guy.
At least I didn't have to pay for it.

Gratitude for this amazing work of art with heroes that look and sound like me. Thank you to the author, and thank you to the narrator for understanding the assignment and putting your whole heart into it.

Annoyingly Repetitive!
Revisado: 06-22-23
First off, I'm here for the narrator, whom I followed here from some of her other works. The writing, however is OK at best. I am really struggling to get through this audio book! It's like I want this to be a great story, and I keep listening with hope, but I'm merely torturing myself. It's not that the author repeats complete passages multiple times. It's also not because this incredibly powerful protagonist, a soldier of death, is disgustingly weak whenever she's not fighting. It's not even that I'm having a VERY difficult time relating to another one of the so-called protagonists. Actually, yes it is precisely that. Amari's character is shoved so far down my throat that I'm choking on the one hundred times I've heard her refer to herself as "queen," or a "ruler." I mean, in what world (real or fantasy) does an ancient people with thousands of years of tradition and secrets simply hand over eldership (overnight) to not only an outsider, but a stranger - a stranger whose family slaughtered thousands of their people? They want freedom, but they're fighting to put a monarch on the throne so they can be ruled by someone else again? I'm constantly yanked out of the illusion by this character.
