Just a dumb story
Revisado: 03-09-25
Nothing intriguing. Feels like writing from a beginner. Awful characters. I wanted to quit and save my time but still had to finish and the ending was no better than the rest.

Historia
For GBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton, McAlpine Lodge seems like the ideal getaway to celebrate their honeymoon. Set on a gorgeous, off-the-grid mountaintop property, it’s the perfect place to unplug and reconnect. Until a bone-chilling scream cuts through the night. Mercy McAlpine, the manager of the Lodge, is dead. With a vicious storm raging and the one access road to the property washed out, the murderer must be someone on the mountain. But as Will and Sara investigate the McAlpine family and the other guests, they realize that everyone here is lying.

Simply put, it's mostly boring
Revisado: 01-26-25
The story was just not gripping. A decent story during the murder scene and then again for the climax of what happened. But this 18 hour listen was about 8 hours too much with too little.

Historia
Each of us has a dual nature: we are light (conscious) and dark (unconscious). The dark side of our personality - the “other,” the shadow side - is made up of what we think is our primitive, primal, negative impulses - our “existential kink.” Our existential kink also drives the dark or negative repeating patterns in our life: always choosing the abusive partner or boss, settling for less, thinking that we’re undeserving, not worthy. But it also is the source of our greatest power.

Just couldn't make it click
Revisado: 09-10-24
I love trying to grow through books like this, but this one just didn't stick and I gave up 2/3 into it. There are books like Untethered Soul that just speak to you the entire way through and you connect with the message. Never happened here. Example. Finding joy in the things that give you pain? So if a loved one has cancer and you feel pain you are somehow supposed to turn that pain into joy? It just continued to not make sense. Then there were the examples focused on wealth and materialism. Getting that great car or charging people $1000/hr to help them. That all just felt gross.

Slower than the first two
Revisado: 05-26-24
I loved the first two books in the Tracey Crosswhite series and was excited for the whole thing. But this one was less gripping. A basic crime story with a 2nd random crime unrelated to the plot randomly thrown in - as filler? I don't know. Makes me unclear if I'll continue the series

Oh man, each S. A. Cosby book I read I think is his best, and this was no different! Think Silence of the Lambs set in the South with a black sherrif in a highly racist southern town, trying to catch a gruesome serial killer. Just superb!

Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Epic but lonnnggg
Revisado: 03-07-23
So first of all the longest audiobook I've listened to before this are around 25 hours and I struggle with those. So the fact I made it 50 hours is a testament to how great this story is. But man there is so much detail that could have been left out and still kept the essence of the story. Long chronology descriptions like the book of Genesis, but with physical descriptions. Architectural detail that went on and on. Get through those sections and you will find an epic human story based on a metaphysical world. Or is it...? The philosophical epilogue of Michael at the end was the best part of the book.
