Historia
Yorkshire, 1943. Lily Baines, a bright young debutante increasingly ground down by an endless war, has traded in her white gloves for a set of headphones. It’s her job to intercept enemy naval communications and send them to Bletchley Park for decryption. One night, she picks up a transmission that isn’t code at all—it’s a cry for help.

Beautiful, excellently crafted short story.

The narration was wonderful and the simultaneous WW2/present day characters' interaction didn't feel woo-woo. A tribute to those whose quiet heroism keeps us all safe but must remain unsung.

Historia
The Big Break investigates how Washington works, and how different kinds of people try to make it work for them. Ben Terris presents an inside history of this crucial moment in Washington, reporting from exclusive parties, poker nights, fundraisers, secluded farms outside town and the halls of Congress; among the oddballs and opportunists and true believers. This book is about the people who see this moment as an opportunity to bet big—on their country or maybe just on themselves.

Interesting character studies of those behind the scenes of our politics and government. Not exactly encouraging, but at least Ben leaves us at the end with the youngest member of Congress and the perhaps vain hope that he's the beginning of a different way of doing things in DC.

My Favorite Delightfully Deadly Novella (so far)
Revisado: 01-18-23
So sweetly sad but satisfying. Have tissues handy at he end. For maximum reader enjoyment, this is not really a stand-alone.; it's best read in Ms. Carriger's written order and please complete the"Finishing School" series before you read this book.
Emma Newman does a lovely job narrating. She has read all of the Delightfully Deadlies so it's odd to see griping for this latest one. Name pronunciation is an issue when changing narrators in every single audiobook series I've listened to, especially those that have a world built which contains several intertwining series over many years. It is jarring at first, but please don't disparage the narrators. Choose to use context clues to clear up any confusion.
My 2 cents: This is a production issue; not a performance one.The actors should all be given a phonetic list of names and places as the author intends them to be pronounced to provide continuity for listeners. In audiobooks, these discrepancies correspond to changing the spelling of names and places in every new print volume in a series. Someone should have figured out by now that there are fundamental differences between audio and print and acted accordingly.

Historia
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.

It's AD 123, and the sun is shining on southern Gaul. Ex-military medic Ruso and his British wife, Tilla, are back after a long absence - but it's not the reunion anyone had hoped for. Ruso's brother has left him in charge of a farm he has no idea how to manage, a chronic debt problem, and a gaggle of accident-prone small children. Meanwhile his sister Flora has run away to rescue her boyfriend, who's accused of murdering a wealthy guest at a party.

A nice little nibble
Revisado: 03-16-21
It's always fun to visit Ruso and family, and I'd listen to Simon Vance read the phone book. A lovely way to spend a few hours while anxiously awaiting the next full-length book. You can read this with no knowledge of the series, but of course it's better to start with Medicus and let the tale unfold. Since this is a short story, there's not a lot of the historical detail that makes this series so interesting, but the characters still interact in the endearing way readers have come to expect from Ruth Downie.

Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a bucolic Irish village would be the perfect escape. After 25 years in the Chicago police force and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens. But when a local kid whose brother has gone missing arm-twists him into investigating, Cal uncovers layers of darkness beneath his picturesque retreat, and starts to realize that even small towns shelter dangerous secrets.

Another wonderful story by Tana French. Want more
Revisado: 11-26-20
This is a very satisfying story with excellent narration. It is another stand-alone, set in rural Ireland & not part of the Dublin Murder Squad series. A retired Chicago cop has moved to an old fixer-upper to live a quiet life and putter around restoring the house and trying to fit in to an insular rural community. Naturally, things don't work out as planned and he's drawn in to a local mystery by a local 13 yr old kid. The characters are wonderfully drawn and the mystery meanders nicely and wraps up well. I love these characters and I really hope French decides to set a series in this world, and I have discovered a new favorite narrator in Roger Clark.

Historia
In the sacred grove of Julius Caesar, something deadly stirs in the undergrowth - a serial killer, who haunted the gardens for years, has claimed another victim - in Lindsey Davis' next historical mystery, The Grove of the Caesars. At the feet of her adoptive father, renowned private informer Marcus Didius Falco, Flavia Albia learned a number of important rules. First and foremost - always keep one's distance from the palace, nothing good comes from that direction. But right behind it - murder is the business of the Vigiles, best to leave them to it.

Forgers & Bibliomaniacs & Serial Killers, oh my!
Revisado: 08-26-20
Lindsey Davis has given us another fun outing with Flavia Albia. This time she's mostly on her own and missing husband Tiberius, who is out of town. She ends up working with the Vigiles and an agent of Caesar's to solve a murder and investigating the murky world of literature forging and the collectors who keep it in business, all the while juggling an ever expanding household and a house under seemingly eternal renovation. Wryly commenting on it all, Albia is a delightful narrator of her life in ancient Rome. You can read this as a one-off, bit I highly recommend the rest of the series and the Marcus Didius Falco series it came from. Jane Collingwood does an excellent job inhabiting Albia's character.

This is an excellent, thrilling story. Some parts are too intense for younger than middle school children, especially with Michael Sheen's ability to convey all of the emotion that Philip Pullman has put on the page. This is my first time hearing Sheen on an audiobook and he is a revelation!

Historia
This live performance of a powerful police procedural comes to life through the artistry of Celeste Lecesne and is accompanied by the original music of Duncan Sheik. Celeste portrays every character in a small Jersey Shore town as they unravel the story of Leonard Pelkey, a tenaciously optimistic and flamboyant 14-year-old boy who has gone missing. A luminous force of nature whose magic is only truly felt once he is gone, Leonard becomes an unexpected inspiration as the town’s citizens question how they live, who they love, and what they leave behind.
