Historia
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

This provides valuable perspectives on Lincoln’s beliefs, some practically innate, unshakable, others evolving with experience and possibility. Well read.

Historia
In this acclaimed biography that earned him a spot on Nixon's infamous "enemies list," Garry Wills takes a thoughtful, in-depth, and often "very amusing" look at the thirty-seventh US president, and draws some surprising conclusions about a man whose name has become synonymous with scandal and the abuse of power (Kirkus Reviews).

Still relevant
Revisado: 02-22-25
This is a very dense survey of philosophical and political thoughts and theories wrapped in an arguably superficial psychology of Nixon. It is clearly relevant today, when Magats are echoing fascist taunts from the past and fearful of feminism, resentful of experts. (The right-center-left ‘thing’ remains squishy!)

Valuable analysis
Revisado: 01-26-25
The perspective that Germans were overoptimistic and underprepared, makes sense and is strongly supported by historic documents and numerous data. This is an important review and analysis that corrects revisionist, self-serving histories told by German generals after the war.

Historia
For decades in America, car racing meant NASCAR, and to a lesser extent IndyCar, with Formula 1—the wealthiest racing league in the world—a distant third. Fast forward to 2023, and F1 has emerged at the front of the pack powered by a passionate yet nascent American fanbase. The F1 juggernaut has arrived, but this checkered flag was far from inevitable.

happy talk, misleading
Revisado: 09-08-24
No doubt optimism is more motivating than pessimism, and there are no ‘magic’ thresholds, but I was looking for realism and data, not spin. Author/reader states that the ‘world has woken up to climate change’, but gives no basis to believe it (and even if it's woke, will it do the hard part and get out of bed?). Some pessimists (famously Malthus) have been wrong, true.
Pattern: state an extreme (exponential growth), assert ‘not true’, and say things are better (unsustainable *geometric* growth?). Most things are ok and some are improving but are not the climate, potable water, arable land etc etc etc deteriorating alarmingly? (I did not look at footnotes.)

No company embodied American ingenuity, innovation, and industrial power more spectacularly and more consistently than the General Electric Company. GE once developed and manufactured many of the inventions we take for granted today, nearly everything from the lightbulb to the jet engine. GE also built a cult of financial and leadership success envied across the globe and became the world’s most valuable and most admired company. But even at the height of its prestige and influence, cracks were forming in its formidable foundation.

In Bomb Power, Garry Wills reveals how the atomic bomb transformed our nation down to its deepest constitutional roots - by dramatically increasing the power of the modern presidency and redefining the government as a national security state---in ways still felt today. A masterful reckoning from one of America's preeminent historians, Bomb Power draws a direct line from the Manhattan Project to the usurpations of George W. Bush.

Main point is well argued
Revisado: 06-13-24
US presidents have long tried to increase their power but ‘the bomb’ and associated secrecy and international involvement changed the equation, strengthening the executive at a grim cost to the nation. The excesses demonstrated by the CIA and the GWB administration have not been adequately constrained, nor is a solution offered. Good people in government help.
