Historia
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

The male narrator was so much better than the female
Revisado: 11-01-24
I want really able to appreciate the story because the female reader so regularly misplaced emphasis in any given sentence. she regularly made Nadine sound petulant and slightly less than smart because of the over emphasis on parts of the dialogue. Would not listen to this narration again.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Historia
Holding the Line, Barbara Kingsolver's first nonfiction book, is the story of women's lives transformed by an a signal event. Set in the small mining towns of Arizona, it is part oral history and part social criticism, exploring the process of empowerment that occurs when people work together as a community. Like Kingsolver's award-winning novels, Holding the Line is a beautifully written book grounded on the strength of its characters.

Amazing story that gives voice to the women
Revisado: 12-28-23
This is a painfully relevant bit of history well told. It echoes my own life long experience of how "empowerment" really works and how it threatens the status quo. We need unions now more than ever as corporations have gained even more power over the lives of larger parts of the population. Recommended.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Repetitive & Predictable
Revisado: 11-26-23
The reader speaks as if she's pissed off and disgusted about 80% of the time which, arguably, is really the voice of the narrator. I found the characters unlikeable and predictable. The "romance" is silly. The sex is singularly not sexy and based on a particularly cringe worthy twist on the old trope of "I just can't help it".
I did give it the benefit of the doubt that something in the story would break through the ridiculous premise that everyone just accepts that young people die in droves while hoping to become riders. But that didn't pan out as what we get is an annoying swinging pendulum between, "this is tragic" and everyone moving on as if nothing can be changed. The most unappealing part of the story was the narrator claiming an absolute need to see if she can make the grade as a rider, when 1. we know she does and 2. how does that justify the death of people left and right?

Historia
On the eve of their thirtieth birthday, twins Jasmine and Nicolas Moretti celebrate late into the night. But when Nicolas wakes several hazy hours later, Jasmine is dead—and he is covered in her blood. Panicking, he takes the murder weapon and runs into the cold Stockholm night. For the police, it’s an open-and-shut case. Nicolas is guilty. And given that he remembers so little of what happened that night, even he isn’t convinced of his innocence.

Loved the narration
Revisado: 02-26-23
It felt genuinely Swedish to hear the names pronounced with an accent. I didn't have my audio issues. the story though keeping my attention throughout was grim with few redeeming glimpsed into more relatable parts of the characters. I guessed the end and then had to kind of slog through it to be sure I was right. I don't think. I'll don't think I'll do another in the series.

that the story was one long, drawn out cliche. I couldn't finish it. I tried to get past the narrator's strange emphasis and phrasing to see if the story would catch me. It did not.

I dig the stories, couldn't handle the performance
Revisado: 11-05-21
This is just a warning to anyone like me who struggles with tolerating mouth noises. I was constantly picturing the mouth movements being made to produce the sounds. I could o my listen in the car with other sounds to distract me. If you're someone who has this very real reaction, you're warned. If you're not, you wouldn't understand so you'll probably be just fine. 🙂

Is it the voice or the character that made me stop
Revisado: 01-04-21
I couldn't finish it because of how annoying the main character came across- due to the performance, I think. I suspect a more pleasing voice might have made the story more compelling. The character is hard to pull off as not just whiny and self-absorbed, so maybe it was the writing. Either way, I couldn't stick it out.

Pertinence, Perspicacity and Proof
Revisado: 11-01-20
There is insight here for any and everyone struggling to forge pathways for ending racism. It took me a while to get used to the reading, the author pauses unexpectedly which is a bit difficult to follow at first. Either he improved or my ear was tuned, but by the end the voice was exactly the right one to say what needed to be said to conclude this powerful book.
