Historia
Lafayette Pool provided inspiration for Brad Pitt’s character “War Daddy” Collier in the movie Fury, but his true story is less known. Here, acclaimed author Stephen L. Moore writes the first full-length narrative to honor the valiant Texan tanker. A champion Golden Gloves boxer turned U.S. Army legend, Pool was known as the “ace of tankers” for destroying more than five enemy tanks in head-to-head combat.

This is a must read for anyone interested in WWII history
Revisado: 02-07-25
This account of a young company commander with the 2nd Infantry Division in WWII is profound and insightful. I had read this book years ago when a copy was given to me by a distant relative and pen pal who was also served in the same regiment during WWII. I decided to buy the audiobook and it proved just as moving as the physical book. Macdonald and all who served deserve our gratitude.

Historia
A Bridge Too Far is Cornelius Ryan’s masterly chronicle of the Battle of Arnhem, which marshaled the greatest armada of troop-carrying aircraft ever assembled and cost the Allies nearly twice as many casualties as D-day. In this compelling work of history, Ryan narrates the Allied effort to end the war in Europe in 1944 by dropping the combined airborne forces of the American and British armies behind German lines to capture the crucial bridge across the Rhine at Arnhem. Focusing on a vast cast of characters, Ryan brings to life one of the most ill-fated operations of the war.

The ultimate overall story of Market Garden
Revisado: 11-13-24
I am sure like many of you, I also watched the film A Bridge Too Far. This is the true story of Operation Market Garden, that is told in all of its glory, heroics, and harrowing experiences.
There are only two slight qualms I have with this book, and those are the misidentification of Browning as the Airborne Corps Commander. That was Ridgeway. Browning was the second in command of the First Allied Airborne Army, but was in the field of battle. Ridgeway is mentioned maybe once. In other more American-centric focused accounts of Market Garden Ridgeway is told to have felt impotent and useless , essentially. Even though he too was on the field of battle.
That brings me to my second slight qualm is that besides the initial day or two, and crossing the Waal River by 3/504 PIR, the latter half of the book only really focuses on the First Airborne and XXX Corpse.
However, those two qualms are minor, and I think combined with other books, like September Hope, and It Never Snows in September, among others, this book does the best telling of the overall story and is a must read.

In September Hope, acclaimed historian John C. McManus explores World War II’s most ambitious invasion, an immense, daring offensive to defeat Nazi Germany before the end of 1944. Operation Market-Garden is one of the war’s most famous, but least understood, battles, and McManus tells the story of the American contribution to this crucial phase of the war in Europe.

A great book about American courage
Revisado: 10-08-24
If you are a fan of A Bridge too Far and the stories of American servicemen during Operation Market Garden, then you will enjoy this book.
I thought the narrator was great except for one thing. He kept calling various “I” companies “First Company”. No, the Americans used letters / names for their companies. “I” company is the letter I not the Roman numeral for One. “I” as an “Item” Company. Otherwise he did a great job.

The full real story of an iconic WWII hero
Revisado: 09-18-24
I highly recommend this book to any and all WWII History Buffs, especially those interested in one of the founders of SAS’s full story, Paddy Mayne. This book dispels a lot of the inaccurate myths surrounding Mayne, and shows him as a thoughtful, highly intelligent, complex leader. This book is great. If you are a fan of some of the works by more well known current authors who write a lot about the SAS in WWII, then you must listen to this book.
I will say though that at times this book can be dry and long, especially when listening to the after action debrief reports, and towards the end going over the analysis of his leadership. However, you have to take that in to context, and pair it with other more dramatic accounts by other modern authors. When you do that this book shines and is refreshing, as it offers real stories without embellishing them and goes in to great lengths about Mayne’s post war life.
I would highly recommend this book.

Historia
In 1941, as World War Two raged, scores of men stepped forward to answer Winston Churchill's call for volunteers for Special Service, a high-risk opportunity to undertake the most hazardous, top-secret duties of war. Comprised of some of the finest fighting units in the entire British Army, these warriors longed to leave behind their mind-numbing garrison duties for battle. A rightfully proud regiment, they were disavowed as unruly by top brass, unyieldingly vaunted by Churchill, and courageously loyal to the clandestine "butcher and bolt" raids that made their sacrifices legendary.

Great WWII book about amazing heroes
Revisado: 08-31-24
As always Damien Lewis gives a stirring account about the SAS and their exploits. In this case about the formation of the SAS and their exploits in North Africa. This is a great book, but one minor caveat is that Lewis has covered a lot of the material in this book in some of his earlier works. Although this was a great refresher and did expand upon the stories of the SAS in their desert exploits. Still highly recommend!

At last, here is a book that tells the full story of the turning point in World War II's Battle of the Bulge - the story of five crucial days in which small groups of American soldiers, some outnumbered 10 to 1, slowed the German advance and allowed the Belgian town of Bastogne to be reinforced. Alamo in the Ardennes provides a compelling, day-by-day account of this pivotal moment in America's greatest war.

Great untold story of heroics in WWII
Revisado: 07-18-24
This book is a must listen to for anyone who is interested in WWII History, especially the unsung portions of it. The book itself deserves 5 stars. However, I was not a fan of the narrator. He spoke for a long time as though he was giving a bed time story or an ASMR podcast. I don’t know when but either I got used to his voice or he stopped the soft bed time story approach and adopted a more normal voice. Regardless, this a great book.

A rarely frank account of the US infantry experience in northern Europe, A Foot Soldier for Patton takes the listener from the beaches of Normandy through the giddy drive across France to the brutal battles on the Westwall, in the Ardennes, and finally to the conquest of Germany itself. Patton's army is best known for dashing armored attacks; its commander combining the firepower of tanks with their historic lineage as cavalry. But when the Germans stood firm, the greatest fighting was done by Patton's long undersung infantry.

Mike Bilder probably wouldn’t classify himself as an American Hero, but by listening to this book and light being shed on his wartime experiences, he certainly is a hero. I loved how honest, real and raw this book was. You will too.
