Historia
We live in an epidemic of anxiety. Most of us assume that the key to overcoming it is to think our way out. And for a while it works. But there is always something that sends us back into the anxious spiral we’ve been trying to climb out of. In Beyond Anxiety, Dr. Martha Beck explains why anxiety is skyrocketing around you, and likely within you. She also tells you how to not only reduce your anxiety but use it to propel you into a life filled with peace, meaning, and joy.

Disappointing
Revisado: 07-23-24
Old data supporting new assertions, and while I agree on many points that were made, overall I just expected so much more. There was no mention of emotional intelligence in the equation of diversity. Mentoring and sponsorship was noted, but no mention of coaching, very disappointing.

Historia
We may not realize it as we listen to the soundtrack of our lives through tiny earbuds, but music and all that it encompasses is disappearing all around us. In this fable-like story, three musicians from around the world are mysteriously summoned to Nashville, the Music City, to join together with Victor to do battle against the "Phasers", whose blinking "music-cancelling" headphones silence and destroy all musical sound. Only by coming together, connecting, and making the joyful sounds of immediate, "live" music can the world be restored to the power and spirit of music.

"'Boy, do I have a lot to learn!'" Anyone who's ever picked up a musical instrument of any kind - from the first caveman banging rocks to that little kid at the guitar shop - has thought that. I know I did. I'd been trying for years to break in to the music scene, to show everyone my chops, to make my mark. And I was good. But I wasn't great. I knew that there was something wrong. Then the teacher showed up...."

Historia
What makes love last? Why does one couple stay together forever, while another falls apart? And most importantly, is there a scientific formula for love? Drs. John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman are the world’s leading relationship scientists. For the past forty years, they have been studying love. They’ve gathered data on over three thousand couples, looking at everything from their body language to the way they converse to their stress hormone levels. Their goal: to identify the building blocks of love.

useful and simple but disregard the drinking alcohol bits
Revisado: 01-25-23
The 7 steps outlined are useful and simple strategies to improve your connection with your spouse or SO.
I really disliked all the references to drinking alcohol. At one point there is a mention of limiting your intake to 2 drinks so it doesn’t “change your personality”. Really? that is ridiculous. Ingesting any ethanol will change your brain.

Historia
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

outstanding book. here are some of my favorite snippets
Revisado: 02-05-20
loss travels with change
we present snapshots of ourselves to others
the truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it
therapy is like brain surgery where the patient remains awake during the surgery
taking the heart out of the cadaver and dropping it on the floor and it splits open- how easy it is to break someone’s heart even when we are trying so hard not to
therapy with a condom on (via skype)
people come to therapy because they want to feel better, but what does “better” really mean?
insight is the booby prize of therapy (meaning that your therapist is able to hold up a mirror and allow you to see (reveal) something about yourself that maybe you haven’t wanted to look at, but you don’t act on it or change anything in your life
we marry our unfinished business
unconditional positive regard
secrets are psychic poison
we grow in connection with others
every person you’ve ever been close to lives on in your heart
the nature of life is change and the nature of people is resisting change.

Historia
Worry about cholesterol. Avoid red meat. Eat whole grains. Could it all be a lie? We live in an era of health hype and nutrition propaganda, and we are suffering for it. Decades of avoiding egg yolks, choosing margarine over butter, and replacing the real foods of our ancestors with low-fat, processed, packaged substitutes have left us with an obesity epidemic, ever-rising rates of chronic disease, and, above all, total confusion about what to eat and why.
