Historia
Riptide, Oregon, 1983. A sleepy coastal town, where crime usually consists of underage drinking down at a Wolf Point bonfire. But then, strange things start happening. A human skeleton is unearthed in a local park, and mutilated animals begin appearing, seemingly sacrificed, on the town's beaches. The Mercy of the Tide follows four people drawn irrevocably together by a recent tragedy as they do their best to reclaim their lives - leading them all to a discovery that will change them and their town forever.

Hard to tell where it is going, but stay on the journey!
Revisado: 02-03-25
I love this author’s phrasing and concise depth and am reading all of his work in reverse order. None of the stories are remotely the same, but the depth of what he expresses through well developed characters who make human decisions that are believable and relatable, in very odd circumstances. This one has a twist, which is not a pattern in his work, but it pays off well here, not as a trick but a final understanding of a main character that at once make you rethink any care you’ve had for him and empathize with him more simultaneously. Such a great climax that doesn’t deliver the expected. Loved it!

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Exceptional stitching of multi perspectives from primary sources
Revisado: 08-11-24
As a frequent reader of civil war historical texts, I am struck by the deep research, well edited and variety of primary sources referenced- all while stitching a fuller sense of the tensions, misconceptions and biases of all as they inched closer to worse warfare and death than any feared or hoped for. Will Patton gives a moving and well paced delivery, allowing the full absorption of so many poetically expressed thoughts and feeling via journals and correspondence. I can not recommend this more!

Outstanding! Even on a reread many years later.
Revisado: 06-16-24
Outstanding performance from Sisey S, and still such a powerful, insightful first novel. Is so much more than just the story we see in the classic movie (which I still love so much), with the switching of perspectives narrating the story and from during and in review of the happenings well after. This story structure feels very ahead of its time and full of texture and nuance for such a brisk read. Listen if you have not, it’s a must!

Historia
Everyone has wanted their favorite book to be real, if only for a moment. Everyone has wished to meet their favorite characters, if only for a day. But be careful in that wish, for even a history laid in ink can be repaid in flesh and blood, and reality is far deadlier than fiction...especially on Addington Isle.

Historia
Since his wife died, Ralph Roberts has been having trouble sleeping. Each night he wakes up a bit earlier until he's barely sleeping at all. During his late-night walks, he observes some strange things going on in Derry, Maine. He sees colored ribbons streaming from people's heads, two strange little men wandering around town after dark, and more. He begins to suspect that these visions are something more than hallucinations brought on by lack of sleep.

Not the story you think, in a good way. Music moments too loud
Revisado: 08-27-22
Whoever mixed this audio and the musical interludes did a terrible job. For the first 1/3rd of the book whenever the music started to play you couldn’t hear the audio actor’s words anymore. He was an outstanding narrator but this mix is terrible!

Surprisingly good atmosphere, narrator
Revisado: 07-02-22
This was a surprisingly fun little listen. The narrators were good and the story was a good sort of loose, based on multiple character accounts, like in Carrie. Don’t expect a big twist of definitive explanation. The fun is in the unexplained, making it seem more plausible.

Narration is good but story is nothing, implausible.
Revisado: 04-05-21
I liked the narration and was honestly pulled in by hearing Taylor was doing it, thinking as a professional actor she can hopefully be picky with the stories she narrates so, what the heck... it’s included in my membership. I listened to 2/3rds of it on a long walk until I realized that I didn’t believe anyone would act like these characters and the story was completely hollow. I have no interest in completing and just think Ms. Schilling deserves better material to narrate than this.
