Historia
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

Historia
Saul Indian Horse is in critical condition. Sitting feeble in an alcoholism treatment facility, he is told that sharing his story will help relieve his agony. Though skeptical, he embarks on a heartbreaking journey from the present - and into the woods of Northern Ontario, where his life began in a snowy Ojibway camp. The tale that follows is one of great pain and great determination from Richard Wagamese, an author who "never seems to waste a shot" ( New York Times).

A Journey
Revisado: 02-11-25
absolutely spectacular journey through an entire range of emotions and experiences. there are definitely some heavy parts with abuse and pain, and that abuse and pain lingers throughout the backstory of sport, nature, and self-discovery. however, the book maintains a balanced tone an alternate between the narratives beautifully. it's wonderfully paced and an absolute joy to read.

Historia
As Tony follows his own path toward adulthood, he relies on the wisdom of Ultima, a magical healer, to forge his unique identity. With hundreds of thousands of copies in print, Bless Me, Ultima has been called the most widely read Mexican-American novel in the English language. Richly evocative, it has earned its place among the classics of modern literature, even drawing favorable comparisons to Herman Melville's legendary Moby Dick.

Great Addition to American Literature
Revisado: 01-31-25
my favorite part about this novel is that it breaks the monolith of literature. the book feels like it takes place in 19th century Mexico, but it actually takes place in New Mexico around the 1940s and 50s. it's coming of age novel and it really explores the intersecting cultures between the native in Catholic culture is that intertwine to create Antonio's identity. overall, I enjoyed the book. it is definitely written well and I genuinely believe some people out there will fall in love with it. through no fault of its own, I'm going to keep it out a bit of an arm's length. good book, but I never fell in love.

Italo Calvino imagines a novel capable of endless mutations in this intricately crafted story about writing and readers. If on a Winter's Night a Traveler turns out to be not one novel but 10, each with a different plot, style, ambience, and author, and each interrupted at a moment of suspense. Together they form a labyrinth of literatures, known and unknown, alive and extinct, through which two readers, a male and a female, pursue both the story lines that intrigue them and one another.

Incredibly Funny Meta Narrative
Revisado: 08-09-24
Calvino's If on a Winter's Night a Traveler is about reading Calvino's if on a winter's night a traveler. it is a hilarious meta narrative that consistently references itself, satirizes reading and academia, and is made for people that think about the nature of reading. it is a book about reading. for this reason, this is one of my favorite books ever. I would recommend it to someone philosophical, someone open to a very different experience, and someone who likes to think about their relationship between themselves and the book.

Historia
First published in 1958, a year after On the Road put the Beat Generation on the map, The Dharma Bums stands as one of Jack Kerouac's most powerful and influential novels. The story focuses on two ebullient young Americans - mountaineer, poet, and Zen Buddhist Japhy Ryder, and Ray Smith, a zestful, innocent writer - whose quest for Truth leads them on a heroic odyssey, from marathon parties and poetry jam sessions in San Francisco's Bohemia to solitude and mountain climbing in the High Sierras.

I really enjoyed it. i have a bit of a Buddhist background so I was familiar with some of his philosophy, but I was rather critical of the sensualism or hedonism that many of the characters act on. Great read.

Historia
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Exceptional audio performance. I will say that the novel is hilariously sexist and scientifically backward, but that adds to the fun. Great tension and fun read.

Historia
Prince Lyov Nikolayevitch Myshkin is one of the great characters in Russian literature. Is he a saint or just naïve? Is he an idealist or, as many in General Epanchin's society feel, an "idiot"? Certainly his return to St. Petersburg after years in a Swiss clinic has a dramatic effect on the beautiful Aglaia, youngest of the Epanchin daughters, and on the charismatic but willful Nastasya Filippovna. As he paints a vivid picture of Russian society, Dostoyevsky shows how principles conflict with emotions - with tragic results.

Fav. Big D Novel
Revisado: 12-20-23
I have a long and personal history with this book, but to put it simply, this is my favorite and most personal Dostoevsky novel. The best way to explain this book is simply a Jane Austen novel on crack. It has D's usual emphasis on a complex psychology that is difficult to express or explain, especially by rational terms. However, this novel distinguishes itself through Prince Mishkin, Rogojin, and Natasha P. It is a good man that leads this novel, and it is exactly his goodness that is associated with idiocy and failure.
Quick note on the audio: fantastic. It's not a dramatic production, but the narrator in my opinion does a perfect job of varying his voice for the various characters. Don't expect something like Andy serkis reading Lord of the rings, but this is one of my favorite narrators for D's work.

If every war needs its master chronicler, Ukraine has Serhiy Zhadan, one of Europe’s most promising novelists. Recalling the brutal landscape of The Road and the wartime storytelling of A Farewell to Arms, The Orphanage is a searing novel that excavates the human collateral damage wrought by the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Good, but not Great
Revisado: 11-20-23
Overall, the biggest hinderence to this novel is the first half. it begins to come into it's own, but there is an absence of sense of place and distance. Pasha's journey is great, but when I finished I struggled to get a clear sense of each character and location he has been. a few stand out, like "Sir" and the "iguana," and a few locations stand out too, but for an almost 11 hour book much feels lost. still, worth a read. Slava Ukraine.

Historia
The Sinner and the Saint is the deeply researched and immersive tale of how Dostoevsky came to write this great murder story - and why it changed the world. As a young man, Dostoevsky was a celebrated writer, but his involvement with the radical politics of his day condemned him to a long Siberian exile. There, he spent years studying the criminals that were his companions. Upon his return to St. Petersburg in the 1860s, he fought his way through gambling addiction, debilitating debt, epilepsy, the deaths of those closest to him, and literary banishment.
