Alien commander’s humorous battle of wits with locals
Revisado: 04-20-25
While I was disappointed that Katherine Parkinson was only in the first (pilot) episode, the performances are uniformly great. I must have listened to the whole series at least 20 times. An alien-occupied village refuses to cooperate with aliens studying them - humorous and charming.

Casual profanity delivered at breakneck speed
Revisado: 05-31-24
Casual profanity is NOT a hallmark of professional audio production. The actors deliver their lines like the studio is burning down around them. For fans of Irish dialect profanity. (I have personally produced radio plays.)

Historia
In which John B. arrives at The Fairgrounds, a space station in the Teegarden's System commonly known as the unluckiest place in Human space, and finds himself living with Althaar, the nicest being you'd ever want to meet, from a species whose very presence in any way causes Humans to react instinctively with fear, panic, and nausea. As John goes about his new day and job on the Fairgrounds, he meets many of the other beings who have wound up there, and discovers that even the simplest day-to-day existence on the station is basically a death-defying act. Painful voices and extended use of degraded audio
Revisado: 05-30-24
Cannot bear Althaar's voice. Extended automated(?) voice exchanges with deliberately degraded audio were physically painful to listen to. Maybe there is a good story but annoying audio effects obscured EVERYTHING.

Historia
In Radio Free Albemuth, his last novel, Philip K. Dick morphed and recombined themes that had informed his fiction from A Scanner Darkly to VALIS and produced a wild, impassioned work that sounds like a visionary alternate history of the United States. Agonizingly suspenseful, darkly hilarious, and filled with enough conspiracy theories to thrill the most hardened paranoid, Radio Free Albemuth is proof of Dick's stature as our century's greatest science fiction writer.

Bummer of a book
Revisado: 04-26-24
A personal dystopian nightmare written shortly before Dick's own unfortunate end. Do not listen to this if you are prone to depressive moods. The abrupt change of narrator in Part 2 was very jarring. The second narrator even read the Chapter numbers with exaggerated intensity and loudnesss. The "bad guys" are fronted by a 19-year-old female agent, which would be highly unlikely in any serious organization. "Voices in the head" are once again interpreted as extraterrestrial assistance with hidden but presumably (God knows why) benign agenda.

Historia
God is not dead. He has merely been exiled to an extraterrestrial planet. And it is on this planet that God meets Herb Asher and persuades him to help retake Earth from the demonic Belial. Featuring virtual reality, parallel worlds, and interstellar travel, The Divine Invasion blends philosophy and adventure in a way few authors can achieve.

Much better than VALIS: Book 1
Revisado: 04-22-24
It has character, story and a minimum of philosophical meandering compared to the original VALIS. The attempts at female voices were highly grating. Also, I could often not distinguish Emmanuel from Zina in their conversations. Sadly confusing in an already deliberately confusing fiction.

Historia
What is VALIS? This question is at the heart of Philip K. Dick's groundbreaking novel, the first book in his defining trilogy. When a beam of pink light begins giving a schizophrenic man named Horselover Fat (who just might also be known as Philip K. Dick) visions of an alternate Earth where the Roman Empire still reigns, he must decide whether he is crazy or whether a godlike entity is showing him the true nature of the world.

No story. Philosophical ramblings
Revisado: 04-18-24
Philip K. Dick had his own mental problems and some drug problems as well. He projects these onto an alter ego Horselover Fat. We are treated to a hodgepodge of ancient conspiracy theories of a theological nature as Fat attempts to deal with his problems every way but confronting them. People come and go, offer their own drug-addled interpretations of random theosophical texts, or committ suicide and further muddy the waters. There is no science fiction here. His writing does have a certain mad poetry to it but no attempt is made at plot. There is no resolution, no ending to this story. I consider it the worst of Dick's books. I am a fan of many of his other more structured works.

Historia
Churchill is Prime Minister for the last time. Rationing is still in force. All music sounds like the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. People like living in 1952: it's familiar and reassuring, and Britain knows its place in the world. Few have noticed it's been 1952 for the past 65 years. Meet Professor Quanderhorn; a brilliant, maverick scientific genius who has absolutely no moral compass. With his Dangerous Giant Space Laser, High Rise Farm, Invisible Robot and Fleet of Monkey-driven Lorries, he's not afraid to push the boundaries of science to their very limit.

Historia
The year is 2099 and planet Earth is in crisis. A change in its orbit has resulted in days being 25 hours long (except Thursday, which hasn't existed for over a decade) and the extra months of Janril, Febtober, and Marchuary. In a post-apocalyptic England, the cattle-clasm has wiped out the majority of livestock and climate change has formed the drizzly season of Hamble. However, hope is at hand for the planet in the form of Professor Nebulous.

Fun sci-fi that takes itself seriously
Revisado: 01-21-24
I bought the single season offering when it first came out and was pleased to get this offer of all three seasons. Professor Nebulous oversees a team of post-Withering scientific investigators solving problems on Earth, in space and occasionally in deep Time. Professor Nebulous is haunted, not only by his clown-family past, but also by a single awful mistake that darkened his career. David Warner is a terrific villain as the diabolical Dr. Klench. This future world is peopled with great characters like The Sentient Candle of Luxemborg, the Infernons in their heat-insulating cloaks and the Lovelies with no clothes at all.
By turns goofy, satirical and surprising, Nebulous represents the best of sci-fi humor as only the UK seems capable of producing.
Truthfully, I have listened to the entire series ten times.
