Historia
From the best-selling author of Kafka on the Shore comes this rich and revelatory memoir about writing and running and the integral impact both have made on his life. Equal parts training log, travelogue, and reminiscence, this revealing memoir covers Murakami's four-month preparation for the 2005 New York City Marathon. Settings range from Tokyo, where he once shared the course with an Olympian, to the Charles River in Boston, among young women who outpace him.

Fun memoir. Not great running advice. There is no glory in not walking.
Revisado: 02-24-25
This a fun memoir to read. As a long time marathoner and ultramarathoner, it's always fun hearing other's experiences. I cringed, however, every time he glorified not walking during any race. Even to the tune of saying "at least I didn't walk" on his future tombstone. This is bad, if not dangerous running advice. Walking is absolutely part of every professional runner's ultramarathon plan, and a great way to do more and healthier marathons. He would have a healthier relationship with running if he could lay down the pride and bring some walking into the equation. For anyone considering running after reading this book, this view does not represent the vast majority of runners, and certainly no ultrarunners or full Ironman runner. Please don't let never walking be the goal. That's one man's off par opinion.

Historia
Among the autobiographies of great military figures, Ulysses S. Grant’s is certainly one of the finest, and it is arguably the most notable literary achievement of any American president: a lucid, compelling, and brutally honest chronicle of triumph and failure. From his frontier boyhood, to his heroics in battle, to the grinding poverty from which the Civil War ironically rescued him, these memoirs are a mesmerizing, deeply moving account of a brilliant man told with great courage.

Fantastic!
Revisado: 10-20-23
Fantastic reading of perhaps the greatest memoir written by a US president.
I only wish they'd take the name "Simpson" off of the audiobook cover. The "S" in U.S. Grant does not stand for anything as can be gleaned from the memoir itself and every reputable academic work. It discredits the audiobook to have it on the cover and made me cringe every time I opened it.

Historia
There is no question that the United States faces dangerous threats from without; the greatest peril to the country, however, comes from within. In The Bill of Obligations, bestselling author Richard Haass argues that, to solve our climate of division and safeguard our democracy, the very idea of citizenship must be revised and expanded. The Bill of Rights is at the center of our Constitution, yet the most intractable conflicts often emerge from cases that, as former Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer pointed out, “are not about right versus wrong. They are about right versus right.”

Good Idea Killed by Bias
Revisado: 05-14-23
While the book's premise is a good one, that civic education and obligations are essential to continue our democracy, it fails by being completely imbalanced and promoting a leftist agenda. I bought the book and audiobook excited (as it was promoted) that it might promote a balanced approach to civic obligations. Instead it is a treatise for the left mixed with some common sense ideas. I had a hard time finishing it. I read many books written by overtly leftist and rightist writers to get balanced approaches to issues. When they claim to be centrist and then write for one side or the other, then the book dies a hard death.
He supports expanding the inheritance tax, several times. Discussed income maximums without disavowal, He claims open discussion, but supports boycotting Spotify because it doesn't censure. Claims the covid vaccines to be perfectly safe and effective when there has not been repeatable science to support that. Maybe the book was written a year too early. Not even Advil is perfectly safe. No medicine is. Claiming it is puts a "gift from the gods" aura on a medicine, which is a common leftist line. The vaccine has been absolutely proven to not be effective, even on third and fourth doses. To compare it, as he does, to wonderfully effective vaccines like Polio, MMR, and Smallpox is MSNBC regurgitation. And to say any opposition to his "facts" represents a "threat to democracy" and we should follow the example of multi-millionaire artists in boycotting opposite views, truly is the threat to democracy.
The book promotes the a viral threat to democracy, censure, in a sheep's coat of civics education.

Historia
The Italians have a word for the sense of dazzling beauty produced by effortless mastery: sprezzatura. And perhaps no cultural form associated with Italy is as steeped in the love of sprezzatura as opera, a genre the Italians invented. No composer has embodied the ideal of sprezzatura as magnificently as Giuseppe Verdi, the gruff, self-described "farmer" from the Po Valley who gave us 28 operas and remains to this day the most popular composer in the genre's 400-year-old history.

Any additional comments?
Prof. Greenberg does and excellent job with these courses. I signed up for Audible 19 months ago and have listened almost exclusively to his courses. Having just finished Verdi, I have listened to all of his courses. It took over 13 days worth of listening according to the Audible clock. My appreciation for music and its composers has been greatly enhanced by listening to Prof. Greenberg's courses. I highly recommend listening to his courses.

Historia
Dmitri Shostakovich is without a doubt one of the central composers of the 20th century. Drawing on both the flood of declassified documents from the Soviet Union that began in 1991 and Shostakovich's own extraordinarily frank posthumous reminiscences, Professor Greenberg shows how Shostakovich, who, in the words of a friend, "did not want to rot in a prison or a graveyard" was still unwilling to become a docile instrument of the Soviet regime.

Historia
Have you ever wondered how the lives of great composers-especially when set against the social, political, and cultural context of their world-influences their music? After listening to this perceptive series of eight lectures on the life and music of Ludwig van Beethoven, you will likely find that you hear his work in an entirely different way, your insight informed by new knowledge of how Beethoven was able to create masterpieces from the crises of his life. You'll learn about the years of progressive hearing loss-ultimately to produce total deafness-and the understandable agony and rage such a fate would bring upon a composer. About his deep depression over the end of his relationship with the woman he calls his Immortal Beloved. About his pathological hatred of authority, his persecution complex, even delusional behaviors. But you'll also learn how each of these crises, and many others, served to drive Beethoven inward, to reinvent himself and redeem his suffering through art, creating disruptive works of profound passion and beauty that reinvented the nature of musical expression in the Western world.

What did you love best about How to Listen to and Understand Great Music, 3rd Edition?
Well structured, fun to listen to.
Have you listened to any of Professor Robert Greenberg’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. I have listen to four so far and am about to start a fifth.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Too much to digest to listen to in one sitting. A lecture or two per day gives time to chew on the details. (And download some of the works discussed.)
