Not as good as the first two
Revisado: 04-21-24
I dislike changing narrators in the middle of a series. That immediately had me wary of this book. That isn't to say that this narrator is any better or worse than the previous, I just dislike the break in consistency. However the break in consistency was par for the course for this book. The biggest thing that was bugging me in this books is that previously it was that everyone was afraid of Kublai Khan invading. In this book it is now Genghis Khan is the one to be feared, with no explanation of the change. If this is to be a similar timeline like ours that makes no sense as Genghis Khan would have been dead by then. There was also a lot of jumping back and forth as others have mentioned. It almost felt like this was written by a different author.

I really enjoyed it. I think it is better than the first. There are some subtle jokes/references and some that are really obvious, something for just about everyone.

Historia
"There’s nothing there." The words may as well have been a death sentence to young Declan. Without mana, there could be no studying at the sky-piercing Pinnacle Towers, there could be no great monster hunts, and there could be no following in his father’s legendary footsteps. He’d be a cripple. But when a terrible accident forces him to flee, Declan learns the true nature of his mana. Just because it doesn’t resonate at any known frequency doesn’t mean it isn’t magic. Just because he can’t cast the same spells as everyone else doesn’t mean he isn’t a mage.

Really interesting magic system. Lots of swearing. There isn’t a lot of gore or sex, but the swearing is over the top to me.

Historia
It is the distant future, and Baird is a loner, a part time spy, and a notorious alleged thief. “Notorious” for the audacity of her crimes; “alleged” because nobody has ever been able to legally prove she committed any of them. When the hush-hush agency known as the Toolbox recruits Baird, being a clandestine operative seems like a great way to get paid to do what she already does anyway. That is, until a mission goes wrong, and Baird is infected with a deadly virus.

Not Magic 2.0 but good
Revisado: 03-22-22
I prefer Magic 2.0 (I am more into the comedic side if that than the fantasy) but this is stopped pretty good. The concept is interesting.

It has a lot of interesting lore relating to the black ocean series. Other than that it’s my least favorite of them so far. Granted this is probably entirely personal preference but that’s my opinion on it.

Hank is fairly happy that his uncle was murdered. The man had been nothing but a source of endless sorrow and hardships since they first met. Nevertheless, Hank is forced to investigate the killing and comes to realize it is connected to a much larger collection of miseries than even his uncle could manage. This episode marks a huge shift for Hank as he ventures into unknown regions of the cosmos and is confronted with the harsh truths of his reality.

Love the series
Revisado: 01-12-22
I think this is great, and I feel like the narrator is perfect for Hank. There were some audio issues that were minor, I’m not sure if they were player issues or recording issues (mostly repetition and some seemingly long silence between chapters), but all in all I still enjoy the series.

Canonical version of White Sands
Revisado: 05-14-21
I am not really a fan of graphic audio personally. It generally has too much going on for me and distracts me from the story. This suffers from the same shortfall. From what I understand though it is the most canonically complete version of white sands available. As I am immersing myself in the Cosmere I felt I needed to listen at least once. The story is good.

Some difficult to hear parts
Revisado: 12-09-20
I enjoyed this as much as I have the other Thrawn books, very entertaining. Marc Thompson was amazing as always, however the production crew could use some changes I feel. The parts where the characters were in space suits pr masks was very difficult to understand due to muffled sound and distortion. I had to slow the book down from my normal listening rate and turn up the volume to understand the dialogue.

Historia
Even when finding oneself engaged in interstellar war, good form must be observed. Our story is set thousands of years after the Terran Exodus, where two powerful, planet-dominating families - the elegant House Jakabitus and the less refined Hahn Empire - have reached a critical point in their generations-long war. Master Hennik, the Hahn ruler's only son, has been captured, and the disposition of his internment may represent a last and welcome chance for peace.

Great as usual
Revisado: 06-03-20
I enjoy Scott Meyer’s books. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this one as it was quite a bit different. It started slow and rigid, but as things progressed it made sense and was worth it. Without saying spoilerish thing, I think it was on par with his other work, and in my opinion likely took more effort to set up properly, hence the beginning
