Surprisingly, Great.

I needed a snoozer. My ADD can be managed so that I can nap if I have a ebook going in the background. However.... I ended up focused on the story and didn't sleep. The story move actively even though ruminations over lots of things fit smoothly in the flow.
I look forward to the next. The narrator did a very good job also.

Historia
When a body is found in the park, Paul Monroe knows two things: This isn’t a simple mugging, and the weekend he has planned with his boyfriend is officially over before it begins. With no murder weapon but a slew of suspects at the ready, Paul and his partner, Rob, begin the tedious task of piecing together the few clues they have. Happier than he’s ever been, Cliff knows there’s more to Paul than the tough exterior the man shows to the world, but Cliff is determined to take things slow.

Rare for a female writer to get m/m mystery right
Revisado: 10-20-24
First, you can't go wrong with Kale Williams as a narrator.
The gay characters are more like the people I have known. They are people with regular jobs and while being gay helps define them, it doesn't completely define and restrict everything they do. While being gay and being in a m/m relationship takes a lot of the internal thinking, so far in this series the mystery takes center stage. While the sex is still sort of like and in some ways touches the inaccurate and probably prejudiced thinking that women writers depict it, the sex doesn't fill pages in order to sell the product.
I enjoyed the second in the series as much as the first book. Most female writers start inserting more and more graphic, cliche sex in the second and following book.
I look forward to additional books in the series because I bet Eisen will continue producing good ones.

Not a Mystery, but a monologue of a narcissist
Revisado: 10-10-24
The first book in the series I read on Kindle. I thought maybe this is a Mystery with a gay main character. The 2nd book which I listened to on Audible made it clear it was really about a delusionally self-obsessed gay man talking about the universe around him, and how it all was about him. In one short section the word 'I' or personal pronouns referring to him were used 78 times. His cat was just an animation that responded to support his self-obsession.
Only because I paid for it in Audible and maybe to some degree I really wanted a gay related piece of fiction to be about a story that a guy who coincidentally was gay worked around, did I try to get through this.
Maybe the narrator who perpetuated the stereotype of gay men as (swishy guys always thinking of how their "forest green" looked on them and who was respecting their all important feelings about everything) was to blame to some extent.
Maybe if some unicorns were thrown in I would have enjoyed it as gay oy fantasy.
Me and Mulder, for as long as I could, wanted to believe.

Great Series for the gay YA crowd
Revisado: 08-25-24
Creatively done, but.... You have a group of 15 to 16 year olds (looking at behavior) that do not change their immature behaviors after going through the deaths of family, murder, abuse by and deaths of gods. After all those experiences the insufferable name-calling of brat or idiot still rolls off their tongues. The m/m sex is what is written about by female authors who do not get it right, but may appeal to romantic looking gay men readers.

Great narrator. Smooth story.
Revisado: 06-29-24
I enjoyed listening to this story. The m/m lines appeared to fall as a consequence of the characters, but wasn't the center of the story.
The big question is whether the character's orientation and the specifics of sex will begin to be what is intended to carry interest and begin taking up more and more minutes in the successive stories. I believe m/m writers begin to use a common primitive AI that regurgitates previous used words, phrases, and sex scenes as filler in the later books in a series. I hear the same stuff and end up spending more time fast forwarding through frequent and long segments of sex, I end up thinking I may have purchased on a few minutes for real story. I will wait and see in this series. Hopefully not.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Bringing the Myth to Life
Revisado: 06-20-24
The author did what is not so often done in historical fiction, she brought what was almost a side story to vivid life. Regardless of fact, this myth of Achilles, Patroclus, and Troy will be more solidly remembered. I rarely, if ever give high points on each aspect, but believe this work easily earned them.

Emery Hazard and his boyfriend, John-Henry Somerset, just want to enjoy the day at the Dore County Independence Fair. At the shooting gallery, though, Hazard comes face to face with one of his old bullies: Mikey Grames. Even as a drugged-out wreck, Mikey is a reminder of all the ugliness in Hazard’s past. And Mikey seems to know something Hazard doesn’t - something about the fresh tension brewing in town. When the Chief of Police interrupts Hazard’s day at the fair, she has a strange request. She doesn’t want Hazard and Somers to solve a murder. She wants them to prevent one.

That this was the same Hazard from earlier books
Revisado: 04-10-24
Hazard and Somerset did not change from book two. it was the same language. Hazard was still an unlikable, disgruntled man. I tried to get through this last book, but realized I should have stopped at book 2. I tried to stay with it for the last part of my 350 mile trip, but realized the unremarkable, rehashing was more monotonous than driving through flat, unremarkable land in silence.

Historia
Everything in Emery Hazard’s life is finally going well: His boyfriend, Nico, is crazy about him; he has a loyal partner at work; and he has successfully closed a series of difficult murders. By all accounts, he should be happy. What he can’t figure out, then, is why he’s so damn miserable. After a fight with Nico, Hazard needs work to take his mind off his relationship. And someone in town is happy to oblige by murdering the sheriff. The job won’t be easy; the sheriff had enemies, lots of them, and narrowing down the list of suspects will be difficult. Difficult, but routine.

it was good until it wasn't
Revisado: 04-04-24
I had avoided this series after finding it less than I wanted, quite a while back, but then I started again and found it to be as good as I found his other works.
I just finished the 4th in the series and looked forward to the next and then there was the sex scene. Maybe pedestrian, certainly cliche. It was what I have found in much of gay fiction and believe it may too be the product of a woman's computer program that produces a non-man's idea of mansex. That computer program produces the sex you find in straight, romance novels, but for this scene. changes the sex into all male. I think every action in the ending sex scene is almost identical to almost all the mansex in most romance novels, straight or gay.
I am hesitant to continue to follow this series any further in case everything becomes as cliche as the ending sex scene.

Read it
Revisado: 03-30-24
I have listened to many books, this was a great read which I have missed. Except for Ann Cleeves and a few others this is one of my few completely positive reviews.
The character development was smooth and full without being necessarily wordy. The plot was more original than most. Unlike the majority of books with gay characters, sex was handled well. Most of the time mansex in these books, to me, seems like some female author or consultant used a mediocre computer program that generated the same stuff that works OK, I guess, in female romance novels.
