Historia
On Christmas Day, 800, Charlemagne was crowned "Emperor of the Romans" by Pope Leo III. Under his guidance the Carolingian Renaissance flourished, with his capital of Aachen becoming a center of learning and artistic genius. The legacy of Charlemagne on European history and culture is monumental. Yet, within 30 years of his death, his empire had fragmented. Who was this legendary ruler? How had he managed to rule these vast domains? And why has his legacy continued to influence Europeans to this day?

There is evil afoot....
Revisado: 08-23-22
Like the police waving you by an auto accident I am saying, " Move along,, nothing to see here folks. " This is all the same Harry and Meghan we've been subjected to and ruled over by for years. Unless you've been under a rock or literally under her evil woke spell this is familiar ' news '. These workers of evil delight in turning all that is holy, respectful, truthful and good upside down and into total chaos.
Most of the world has heard this before and recognize Harry and Meghan by their works and words, but identifying them for the innocent or blind and spreading a warning about them is a good thing.

Historia
Bill Bryson and his family live in a Victorian parsonage in a part of England where nothing of any great significance has happened since the Romans decamped. Yet one day, he began to consider how very little he knew about the ordinary things of life as he found it in that comfortable home. To remedy this, he formed the idea of journeying about his house from room to room to “write a history of the world without leaving home.”

Historia
No cloistered don, this tall, married Englishman was a freethinking intellectual, who practiced nudism and was devoted to a quirky brand of folk dancing. In 1937, while working as a biochemist at Cambridge University, he instantly fell in love with a visiting Chinese student, with whom he began a lifelong affair. He soon became fascinated with China, and his mistress swiftly persuaded the ever-enthusiastic Needham to travel to her home country, where he embarked on a series of extraordinary expeditions to the farthest frontiers of this ancient empire.

Loved this book read by its supremely rich voiced author. Absolutely well researched, presented in fine order and simply a pleasant way to learn many surprising facts about China's multifaceted people and their history. Along the way we are given a glimpse into an enduring friendship of two lovers of China and shown the underbelly of foreign interference, jealous academia and the riddle of government bureaucracy.

A rousing tale of espionage and unsung valor, this is the captivating true story of Vera Atkins, Great Britain's spymistress from the age of 25. With her fierce intelligence, blunt manner, personal courage, and exceptional informants, Vera ran countless missions throughout the 1930s. After rising to the leadership echelon in the Special Operations Executive (SOE), a covert intelligence agency formed by Winston Churchill, she became head of a clandestine army in World War II.

History as it should be told.
Revisado: 02-24-22
Wonderful look into the real world of spying and the reality and necessity of living and being the working underbelly of war. I found the agents ingenuity, stamina, patriotism, honor and intelligence awe inspiring. The author finely recognizes the young, brave spies and gives credit where credit is long overdue.
It does my heart good to read of the brave souls of Poland that fought so hard ( and have done so throughout history ) for their country.
Who knew Miss Money Penny was real or that James Bond's gadgets were actually used during WW ll?
This VERY well researched, well written book deserved a narrator with a more expressive and enthusiastic presentation.
Very much worth listening to for the treasure trove of information but very monotone in narration. I'm going to listen to it again though!

FDR tackles the Depression
Revisado: 10-18-21
Interesting, well researched with an easy listen narrator. The author gives much info on the depression and the goings on in DC at the time. You are introduced to FDR, his political friends and foes. If you are new to the Depression and the mood of the nation this is an excellent introduction into this era's history in mass. It was an intense, frightening, hungry and angry time. If you are new to Roosevelt this is an excellent glimpse into his political personality.

Historia
On June 15, 1942, as thousands of vacationers lounged in the sun on Virginia Beach, a massive fireball erupted from a convoy of oil tankers steaming into Chesapeake Bay. By the next day, three ships lay at the bottom of the channel, victims of Lieutenant-Commander Horst Degen and his crew on the German submarine U-701. In The Burning Shore, acclaimed military reporter Ed Offley presents a thrilling account of Degen's rampage along the American coast and of US Lieutenant Harry J. Kane's quest to bring him down.

German U boats \ North Carolina!? WWII
Revisado: 10-07-21
Fine narration . Very informative. Most interesting story concentrating upon one naval action off of our nation's Eastern seaboard ( North Carolina ). While naval admirals procrastinated and argued about actions necessary to stop the German U boats that were in our coastal waters and sinking Merchant Marine vessels the European war could be lost by Germany's cutting off all supplies being shipped from our shores. This book gives both an America and German view and is most palatable. A good read.

Needs to be heard....
Revisado: 09-08-21
There are many repeated comments but the history is well worth knowing and the personal information makes it all the more interesting and memorable. This book introduces us to young flyers of this war that should be memorialized and recognized for their guts, common sense, love of fellow man, high morals and patriotism. This book, though sometimes repetitive, kept my attention enough to finish and introduced me to the fine flyers of the last group of fighter pilots to fly in WWll. (Since I lost an uncle on August 11, 1945 while flying in a Liberator over the Pacific all books of this type interest me very much.)

On October 25, 1944, the Samuel B. Roberts and 12 other vessels stood between Japan’s largest battleship force ever and MacArthur’s transports inside Leyte Gulf. Facing more than 20 Japanese vessels - including the 70,000-ton Yamato - the 1,200-ton Samuel B. Roberts turned immediately to action, churning straight at the enemy in a near-suicidal attempt to deflect the more potent foe and buy time for MacArthur’s forces.
