I couldn’t stop listening
Revisado: 04-28-25
A powerful, gut-wrenching, perceptive, and brave accounting of how our justice system fails female survivors of domestic violence. It is difficult to imagine a more cruel treatment of a woman who had already experienced ongoing trauma at the hands of men from the age of five. Yet it is also a story about the incredible love and support of her family, friends, and advocates during the long fight for justice and freedom.

Historia
Vividly written and exhaustively researched, Jonathan Eig’s King: A Life is the first major biography in decades of the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.—and the first to include recently declassified FBI files. In this revelatory new portrait of the preacher and activist who shook the world, the bestselling biographer gives us an intimate view of the courageous and often emotionally troubled human being who demanded peaceful protest for his movement but was rarely at peace with himself.

A Must Read
Revisado: 03-04-25
I did not know how much I did not know. This book both humanizes King and increases one’s admiration for him. His faith and courage were in evidence even as he despaired. He was misunderstood and criticized, yet he carried on with his work. A truly remarkable man who spoke his truth without regard to political expediency. A man who was certain he would meet an untimely end, yet persevered. A hero in every sense of the word.

Did you know roughly twenty-seven percent of child abductions are carried out by an acquaintance or family friend? Who better to lure you away than someone you know and trust? With every day that passed, the likelihood of my being found grew smaller. I never imagined I’d be one of them—my face tacked to a bulletin board at the local grocery store and a statewide search issued on my behalf. Even harder to fathom was that I’d ever be one of the lucky few who made it home after enduring years of captivity.

Completely unrealistic
Revisado: 02-09-25
(Spoiler alert.) In five years of captivity the victim was never raped? Seems like a stretch, but also why would it be written that way? Did the author think the victim would be “damaged goods” otherwise? Also, no lasting physical damage despite frequent beatings? No repercussions from a terrible diet—sometimes bordering on starvation—except low on iron? A lightning recovery from trauma and grief. The men who rescued her and are going to keep her “safe” are all so emotional about her it’s melodramatic. And we hear a lot about how physically attractive and diminutive she is. I stopped at the beginning of Chapter 13 because I was afraid things would get physical, and apparently they do. Inappropriate on so many levels.

Historia
It has been said that everyone knows a cancer survivor, but no one has met an Alzheimer's survivor - until now. In his first two books, Dr. Dale Bredesen outlined the revolutionary treatments that are changing what had previously seemed like the inevitable outcome of cognitive decline and dementia. And in these moving narratives, you can hear directly from the first survivors of Alzheimer’s themselves - their own amazing stories of hope told in their own words.

A medical masterpiece
Revisado: 02-01-25
It was so interesting to hear the stories of patients who successfully reversed cognitive decline. Part 2 was equally enlightening. I was particularly fascinated with Dr Bredesen’s opinion on why our medical system is failing. It all rang true to me. We owe Dr. Bredesen for his tenacity and courage in searching for root causes of a complicated disease.

Revisado: 10-20-24
I’ll confess I couldn’t listen past the point where Ellie and Martin meet up in Vancouver. I really disliked Ellie, the main character, and the narration was so melodramatic that it made me cringe. The mystery part may have become intriguing but I’ll never know. I couldn’t handle the “romance”, with red flags everywhere.

There are so many lessons for the soul in this tale of unimaginable hardship. It reaffirmed my belief in the power of nature to remove the barriers to finding one’s true self. To help one dispense with judgment, illusion, and prejudice. This was, to me, a truly spiritual journey.
