Historia
It is 1940 and William, 12, Edmund, 11, and Anna, nine, aren't terribly upset by the death of the not-so-grandmotherly grandmother who has taken care of them since their parents died. But the children do need a guardian, and in the dark days of World War II London, those are in short supply, especially if they hope to stay together. Could the mass wartime evacuation of children from London to the countryside be the answer?

Sweet and Engaging
Revisado: 04-05-25
Historical fiction, I enjoyed the characters' didn't personalities, and how they interacted. The conflicts were realistic, and situations believable. Sweet interactions between brothers and sister, with enough frustrated interactions to be realistic!

Good story, a little preachy
Revisado: 06-22-24
I enjoyed seeing the Civil War from a different perspective than the first book. I enjoyed the development of relationships between characters. I did get confused when the book mentioned Phoebe's brother dying, as if the reader already knew about it. That event was never depicteded in the book, so it felt like maybe a chapter was skipped or something.

Good clean story
Revisado: 01-27-24
A solid Christian romance. Interesting premise, sufficient intrigue and conflict to move the story forward. Overall it was a good listen, and I will be looking for more titles from this author. That said, I sometimes felt like the characters' conversations with and about God became tedious or forced. And I wish that the narrator had made greater distinction between the voices of the two point of view characters. Several times I became confused when the perspective shifted from one to the other. But a good audiobook.

Newbery Medal winner Paul Fleischman writes a profoundly moving story of connectedness and the journey of a young soul to self-discovery. Told through the voices of five characters and narrated by age-appropriate actors, Whirligig compels the listener with its lesson on how our actions can impact the lives of others - even years later. A stunningly authentic listening experience.

Thoughtful, Engaging
Revisado: 04-15-22
At first I wasn't sure I'd like it, since it starts out with a teenage party drinking scene and middle school romantic silliness. But the point is that the characters grow away from that. It ended up being a great listen, which left me with a gentle feeling of connectedness with the greater human works. My only criticism was that in part of the first chapter there was a female narrator voicing two characters; I couldn't tell the characters apart some of the time.

Historia
First published in monthly parts from March 1852 to September 1853, this novel follows the fortunes of three pedestrian characters; Esther Summerson, Ada Clare, and Richard Carstone. The story they tell embondies Dickens' merciless indictment of the Court of Chancery and its bungling, morally corrupt handling of the endless case of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce, giving the novel its scope and meaning.

Confusing, narrator should be female
Revisado: 07-22-21
Although the male narrator did a great job, the main character is female. So it was strange to hear a man's voice! Like many Dickens novels, there are tons of characters and it was hard to keep track of who was who, even though the narrator used different voices for most of them. And their stories all twist together, often without any obvious connection to the main plot for the first half of the book. If I had been reading it instead of just listening, perhaps it would have been easier to keep track.

Good story, annoying commentary
Revisado: 10-01-20
The created world is intriguing. The stories are good. But in between each section, the annoying editor/compiler talks for a couple of minutes, pulling you out of the interesting story world. That was enough to ruin it. I forwarded through his parts.

Intriguing and fun, but not family-friendly
Revisado: 05-06-20
I loved the plot and enjoyed the fun twists on the usual superhero story. I even laughed aloud while listening at work, which doesn't happen often for me. I only wish there had not been so many sexual jokes and references. I would not be comfortable sharing this with my nieces and nephews. Maybe Amazon could release a more family-friendly version?

Good but a bit confusing
Revisado: 04-03-20
It's a good story, though brief. I thought the two principal female voices sounded too similar. This made it confusing as to who was speaking.
