short, engaging read
Revisado: 10-10-21
This was my first read by Charlotte Dune, and won't be my last (I am looking forward to Mushroom Honeymoon). I listened on Audible and the author did a great job narrating (though I would have liked a bit more variation in the male voices; however the author has a smooth, comforting voice that made for very easy listening). I immediately felt engaged with Saman and Thelma as I was dropped into their vibrant world. With the strong voice, evocative setting, and emotional journeys, it was a more serious read than lighthearted, but don't let that deter you. Both characters were relatable with realistic backstories and journeys, and I appreciated the secondary characters, too. It was also interesting to learn about the medicinal and healing properties of plants and psychedelics.

Fun adventure in the PNW
Revisado: 08-19-21
I enjoyed this second book by ML Erdhal. I am an avid hiker and nature lover and have been to the Olympic NP area, so it was great to get sucked into the setting again. Even if you have not read the first book, this story stands as a good stand alone. I listened on audio and it made for an enjoyable listen on my road trip. I love a cozier whodunit and this one did not disappoint. I'd like to see Crystal's character grow even more in the next books, as she becomes more adept with her hiking and sleuthing skills.

parallel love stories, have tissues
Revisado: 03-19-21
This was my first read by this author and won't be my last. I loved her writing style - fresh voice, polished writing, agency of characters, rich historical detail, emotional backstory and development - all of it kept me turning pages (or rather, listening - fabulous job by the narrators with the audiobook). It was a heart-wrenching read toward the end and with a twist (I sort of expected it but appreciated the turn of events nonetheless - have tissues!). I liked Georgia and Noah's dynamic and arc. Scarlet and Jamieson took a bit more for me to get into, but I did fall into a rhythm with the back and forth of time lines of then and now. The historical research shows. I loved all the side characters as well. So good. Highly recommend. Looking forward to another read from Rebecca Yarros.

Historia
Ambrose Young was beautiful. He was tall and muscular, with hair that touched his shoulders and eyes that burned right through you. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She'd been reading them since she was 13. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have...until he wasn't beautiful anymore.

Heartfelt YA coming of age
Revisado: 09-30-20
Amy Harmon sure has a way with delving deep inside the psyche and hearts of her characters. This time we have Fern and Ambrose. This is more a YA/NA coming of age book, yet, the wordmaster did it again. It was a heartfelt journey of love, heartache, and growing into our own skin and our own perception of ourselves. Told through present day and flashbacks we journey with Fern (who sees herself as an ugly duckling), Ambrose (handsome and Mr. Perfect, but humble, all-star wrestler), and Fern's cousin Bailey who has muscular dystrophy. The metaphors abound. The theme and moral, too. You know to expect some heartache but also a ending with hope. The narrator was fabulous (the same narrator, Rob Shapiro, from The First Girl Child). My only criticism was Fern and Ambrose spent a lot of time beating themselves up and it took them longer for their characters to grow. It is not an action-driven story; the set-up and pay off are clear, but rewarding nonetheless.

Cozy mystery in Pacific NW wilderness
Revisado: 05-03-20
I enjoyed this story. It was just what I needed...cozy mystery/suspense with a lighter tone. Crystal was an engaging protagonist and I look forward to reading future books in this new series. The writing was polished and the refreshing voice on point. The book was a smooth and easy read. I liked the main and secondary characters, too. The storyline was interesting ...and I am a sucker for anything that takes place in the wilderness. I am hoping as Crystal develops her outdoors legs, future books will include more misadventures outside too, although the Seattle setting felt accurate. I can see self-made detective Crystal trekking through the Pacific Northwest hunting down another mystery... Highly recommend!

coming of age meets historical fiction
Revisado: 04-02-20
This was my first book by the author. She did a fabulous job bringing to life WWII-era upstate New York. I enjoyed the story through the eyes of young Meg, who is on the cusp of graduating school, entering college, and delving into womanhood. This story is a blend of historical fiction meets YA meets Women's Fiction. We experience heartache and growth through Meg's journey of breaking free from a dysfunctional family, exploring young love, managing her personal life, and really just surviving during a questionable time. Can she experience life to its fullest? Ms. Heebner explores discrimination, bullying, mental illness, depression and the ravages of war. I'm a sucker for scenery and she does a great job painting the picture of this quiet area of New York. The characters are well-developed and your heart aches for them. A great read -- I highly recommend it!

Engaging YA fantasy takes you on an adventure
Revisado: 02-04-20
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. The narrator brought the adventure to life with each scene as we traveled with Reina on an epic journey. L.Ryan Storms is a talented author and I look forward to more books in this series. I appreciated the lack of info dump at the beginning. The dialogue was witty and worldbuilding just enough to draw me in. I am a sucker for secondary characters and heroes and this story did not let me down in that regard. Highly recommend.

Engaging suspense
Revisado: 12-17-19
I've read another book by this author and once again was not let down. I enjoy her voice and writing style very much. Though told in a woman's POV the male narrator did an astounding job. This story had a darker edge and I felt it hinged on women's fiction (a genre I enjoy). I was surprised by the twist and the "who" of the whodunit! The author did a good job planting seeds of doubt and kept me wondering. It is a standalone book but there are two more out with the lead heroine and I look forward to reading or listening to both to see how far Meredith grows.

Engaging story
Revisado: 12-10-19
I enjoyed everything about this story. I loved the characters, details, pacing, and plot. The narrator was amazing and engaging. I don't read many YA but this one kept me finding moments to listen whenever I could. I'm a big fan of audio and this lived up to my expectations. I highly recommend this book. As YA it's appropriate for younger readers and still quite engaging for older readers and adults too.
