Historia
Like so many of us, McKibben grew up believing—knowing—that the United States was the greatest country on earth. As a teenager, he cheerfully led American Revolution tours in Lexington, Massachusetts. He sang “Kumbaya” at church. And with the remarkable rise of suburbia, he assumed that all Americans would share in the wealth. But fifty years later, he finds himself in an increasingly doubtful nation strained by bleak racial and economic inequality, on a planet whose future is in peril. And he is curious: What the hell happened?

Last chance for Baby Boomers!
Revisado: 10-22-23
McKibben has analyzed very ably, all the various strands running through recent US culture, strands, which have culminated in this moment of time, a time of crisis. He shows that many young people can no longer look optimistically into the future, as they are facing the disturbing reality of climate disaster, as well as racial and economic injustice around them. The author concludes that the generation which bears major responsibility for what has been happening politically up to this point, must now come to the rescue of the young, in order to effect last-minute, radical changes to save the future for their grandchildren: Baby Boomers, redeem yourselves, before it is too late!

Historia
Ever since a childhood visit to Washington, DC, Cassidy Hutchinson aspired to serve her country in government. Raised in a working-class family with a military background, she was the first in her immediate family to graduate from college. Despite having no ties to Washington, Hutchinson landed a vital position at the center of the Trump White House.

Not idealistic enough?
Revisado: 10-06-23
I welcomed and appreciated Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony during the January 6-Hearings, when she was finally more open to describe what she witnessed in the White House, before and while the Trump-instigated domestic terrorism events played out on the Capitol.
After having finished reading her book, however, I came to the conclusion that Hutchinson was not the idealistic, innocent young woman who was misled by Trump, Mark Meadows, etc., as is being touted by her publishers and many political commentators.
Hutchinson seems to have been career-driven, often following orders, while sacrificing ethics with apparently open eyes, in order to achieve a reelection of Trump whom she adored. In spite of Trump’s behavior, which she now labels as “unhinged”, she actually wanted to continue working for him in Florida, after his lost election. Not idealistic enough!

Historia
In rural Virginia, Young and Pak Yoo run an experimental medical treatment device known as the Miracle Submarine - a pressurized oxygen chamber that patients enter for therapeutic "dives" with the hopes of curing issues like autism or infertility. But when the Miracle Submarine mysteriously explodes, killing two people, a dramatic murder trial upends the Yoos’ small community. Who or what caused the explosion? Was it the mother of one of the patients, who claimed to be sick that day but was smoking down by the creek? Or was it Young and Pak themselves?

Not for the squeamish!
Revisado: 07-23-23
In this novel, the author exposes at great length the shadow side of the American dream, as it was experienced by all members of a Korean immigrant family in Baltimore and later in Virginia. The disappointments and heart ache stemming from their immigrant struggle lead to and culminate in a disastrous crescendo. The author also weaves in stories of mothers with autistic children seeking cures, their clashes with militant anti-vaccers , and other characters struggling with infertility. I was mesmerized by the complicated plot twists-but repulsed by the repeated graphic horror which the author inflicts on her readers. I do not want to pick up a book again, which lingers on descriptions of children being hurt and dying a gruesome death. This book is not for the sensitive reader!

Historia
Set on the Minnesota prairies in 1987, during a drought season that is fostering the demise of the family farms, the story features two intertwining narrators: a father searching for answers after his son commits a heinous murder, and a pastor's wife who has returned to the town for mysterious reasons of her own. A penetrating look at small-town America, reminiscent of Russell Banks' Sweet Hereafter or Affliction, driven by a powerful murder mystery, Little Wolves is a literary triumph.

Historia
Judith Kratt inherited all the Kratt family had to offer - the pie safe, the copper clock, the murder that no one talks about - and she knows in her old bones that it's time to make an inventory of her household and its valuables. But she finds that cataloging the family belongings - as well as their misfortunes - won't contain her family's secrets, not when her wayward sister suddenly returns, determined to expose skeletons that the Kratts had hoped to take to their grave.

The last creaking hinges of the Old South
Revisado: 06-20-23
I found that this story about the final demise of the Kratt family mirrored the sickness and insanity at the heart of the Old South. Greed, ruthlessness, and the exploitation of human beings are still evident in the South of the 1920s and 30s. In spite of the depressing racial and gender discrimination depicted, the novel is captivating and even inspiring through the emergence of brave characters of all ages who manage to fight the system in unexpected ways.

Historia
Angela Merkel has always been an outsider. A pastor’s daughter raised in Soviet-controlled East Germany, she spent her twenties working as a research chemist, entering politics only after the fall of the Berlin Wall. And yet within fifteen years, she had become chancellor of Germany and, before long, the unofficial leader of the West. In this “masterpiece of discernment and insight” (The New York Times Book Review), acclaimed biographer Kati Marton sets out to pierce the mystery of Merkel’s unlikely ascent.

The Chancellor-Fact and Fiction
Revisado: 03-17-23
In my opinion, Kati Marton did a good job highlighting the major achievements of Angela Merkel. There were certain weaknesses in her account, however, when she describes the AFD and people living in the former East Germany. The author demonstrates a rather limited knowledge of the subject matter, and often attempts a naive and oversimplified analysis of what has happened and is going on there currently. Her repeated description of modern German society in general as conservative, which is not the case, begs the question of whether she has done her homework in that regard as well.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Prince Harry- a brave soldier's odyssey!
Revisado: 01-15-23
I was very touched by Prince Harry’s honesty in laying bare his own emotional suffering and psychological struggles after the tragic death of his mother, Diana. His life from that time on, seems like a psychology textbook example of what happens when a child does not receive grief counseling and mental health support in the aftermath of trauma. The lack of warmth and physical affection by the adults in his extended royal family did not allow for any cathartic expressions of grief. Acting out at school, the use of alcohol and drugs allowed for only short-lived numbing of Prince Harry’s psychic pain and loneliness, as he grew older. Meghan Markle seems to have come to Harry's rescue and through her warm personality has restored a sense of security and belonging for the floundering prince. When this strong and brilliant young woman, however, became the victim of a racist and ignorant British press, she herself was thrown into a severe mental health crisis. Ironically, it was then Prince Harry who had to really grow up and become the brave hero and warrior he always wanted to be: He had to rescue his young family by removing them from the unrelenting toxicity of the British press and cowardly lack of support by the royal firm. Their flight became a veritable odyssey, when the British government called back their body-guards, and borders closed with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tyler Perry deserves great respect for his role in helping Harry and Meghan find "safe harbor".
Good luck and a happy journey to Prince Harry and his young family! May you find a true home, where you can feel physical as well as emotional security and peace!

White-washing slavery
Revisado: 07-16-22
The author is undoubtedly a gifted story teller. However, her “benign slave holder”myth and sickening attempt to describe happily singing, grateful, loyal and even affectionate slaves is an insult to all descendants of slaves. We should no longer have to read blatant lies about a time in US history which was clearly a brutal system of exploitation and dehumanization of people of color! Not even in novels! To heck with indigo!

Comedy or Tragedy?
Revisado: 03-08-22
Comedy or tragedy? Realistic depiction of Russian progroms mixed with whimsical„The innocent abroad“ episodes, more often than not straining credulity, was too much an uneven borscht to have a valid message. Less may have been more. Left me unsatisfied.
