Historia
Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette. Where to go from there? From bad to worse, apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire - and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.

Milton Friedman and his wife, Rose, teamed up to write this most convincing and readable guide, which illustrates the crucial link between Adam Smith's capitalism and the free society. They show how freedom has been eroded and prosperity undermined through the rapid growth of governmental agencies, laws, and regulations.

greatly disagree with the solutions
Revisado: 04-14-24
but the criticisms, at some Pointe, were very well articulated. unfortunately, it is far easier to criticize than it is to offer a sound solution. perhaps I am more critical because of the wisdom reading this nearly half a century later. but a large amount of hslis thoughts and solutions are nonsense demonstrated in the failures of those who have attempted to implement those solutions.

Historia
This commentary on Galatians was compiled from six homilies given by St. John Chrysostom (347 - 407), the great preacher of Constantinople, providing a detailed verse by verse study of this important letter by the apostle St. Paul. The epistle is the ninth book in the New Testament and is addressed to the Christians in Galatia, a region of Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). In the letter, St. Paul addresses the controversy of the Mosaic law and how it applies to non-Jewish Christians. It is also notable for recording the controversy between Paul and Peter over "Judaizers".

Historia
During the overthrow of the Mexican government, Beatriz’s father was executed and her home destroyed. When handsome Don Rodolfo Solórzano proposes, Beatriz ignores the rumors surrounding his first wife’s sudden demise, choosing instead to seize the security that his estate in the countryside provides. She will have her own home again, no matter the cost. But Hacienda San Isidro is not the sanctuary she imagined. Something is wrong with the hacienda. And no one there will save her. Far from a refuge, San Isidro may be Beatriz’s doom.

Overall an above average book
Revisado: 07-25-23
Gripping, wonderfully writing, and not too hawty. The author has a clear love of Mexican history and it brings the world to life. Contrasting the supernatural of the plot with the grounded, real depiciton of the world after the Mexican Revolution (and all the social commentary therein) serves the book very well. The voice actors are good. The story was rather mundane in the sense that it was predictable once it got going. There was only one real twist around the middle to 3/4 of the way through. But the consequences of that twist were predictable.
As for the ending, I greatly disliked the ending as I felt that the male love interest threw away too much of who they are in pursuit of "love." Which, I cannot say I would call it love the way that he is approaching the inner conflict within himself about the choices that he is making. Contemporary readers will mostly say that it was love that triumphed in the end. But I read it more as giving into lust at the end and going on a road to neglect the duty that he had to his people, family, and community.

Historia
In July 2004, Barack Obama electrified the Democratic National Convention with an address that spoke to Americans across the political spectrum. Now, in The Audacity of Hope, Senator Obama calls for a different brand of politics: a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the "endless clash of armies" we see in Congress and on the campaign trail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit at the heart of "our improbable experiment in democracy".

I really wanted to dislike this book
Revisado: 07-22-23
coming from 2023, who views Obama as a complete failure in enacting change and probably the largest reason for conservatives winning in America right now due to his failings.... I must admit that this was fantastic, humanizing, personable, and truly the mark of someone who loves his country. someone who leads first from seeing the other side (as much as I hate how he did that too well) and can see the humanity in others.

Historia
This is a study of how intellectuals as a class affect modern societies by shaping the climate of opinion in which official policies develop, on issues ranging from economics to law to war and peace. You will hear a withering and clear-eyed critique about (but not for) intellectuals that explores their impact on public opinion, policy, and society at large.

definitely a required reading
Revisado: 07-15-23
this should be a required reading as you could fill an entire year worth of educational exercises on how peddling hypocrisy and revisionist history are mainstays of the current republican party. By engaging in the same criticisms he supposedly levels against his opponents, this book can be summed up summarily as "intelligentsia is everything that has resulted in everything bad in all moments in history"
yet, he carves out special reverence for Maynard Keynes, freidman, and others that he would never bother to criticize. ideas promoted by both bushes, Peterson, and trump would fall squarely within his framework yet he would never admit so and says that the intelligentsia of the contemporary right are just restoring some decency to tithe overabundance of liberal intelligentsia.
yet the intelligentsia in both sides, whom i would place Sowell in with that same category since he arbitrarily places people in without ever clearly defining what is the criteria for being included in that category, peddle in the same nonsense of moral aptitudes and appealing to whatever version of justice they submit themselves to while, in his own words, filtering out all information to the contrary.
like I said, this should be a required reading for all those interested in how someone could be so blind to their own hypocrisy and how far they are willing to distort and twist reality and cherry pick historical fact to fit their narrative.

The Orthodox Christian tradition is filled with wisdom and guidance about the biblical path of salvation. Yet this guidance remains largely inaccessible to parents and often disconnected from the parenting challenges we face in our homes. Parenting Toward the Kingdom will help you make the connections between the spiritual life as we understand it in the Orthodox Church and the ongoing challenges of raising children.

gentle parenting with a Christian outlook
Revisado: 06-25-23
the wife and I listened to this together and she would best describe it as gentle parenting. our main complaint would be replacing the phrase "age appropriate" with "maturity level"
a lot of the Christian aspect is sprinkled throughout but it is more heavily back-loaded. and the author draws heavily from two sources. sister magdelane, and another modern day secular child researcher ( blanking on the name but she is pretty much the premier childhood researcher for the gentle parenting style )

Neoliberalism - the doctrine that market exchange is an ethic in itself, capable of acting as a guide for all human action - has become dominant in both thought and practice throughout much of the world since 1970 or so. Writing for a wide audience, David Harvey, author of The New Imperialism and The Condition of Postmodernity, here tells the political-economic story of where neoliberalization came from and how it proliferated on the world stage.
