Historia
Evan Smoak is a highly trained former government assassin who has survived for years by keeping his circle to a few trusted confidants and a strict code he calls “The Ten Commandments.” But when Evan suddenly finds himself at odds with his oldest friend, all the rules he lives by shatter—and the consequences are murderous. Tommy Stojack might be Evan's best friend in the world. He’s a gifted gunsmith who has created much of Evan's own weapons and combat gear. But now, he has apparently crossed one of Evan's hardest lines and their argument explodes into open warfare.

Best of the bunch IMO
Revisado: 03-10-25
I liked this one a lot. Unique, soft reboot of the series. Hurwitz managed to keep the wildness of the story grounded. Timely and full of great moments, along with the usual mayhem.

Simon Russell Beale is one of Britain's most recognisable and well-loved actors. He has played many roles on stage, film, television and radio - ranging from Winston Churchill to Stalin, George Smiley to King Arthur. But ever since his appearance at school as a glamorous Desdemona, complete with false eyelashes that rendered him half-blind, he has been captivated by Shakespeare.

Must-Listen for Shakespeare and Theater Lovers
Revisado: 01-15-25
I've enjoyed Mr Beale's acting for years, and was pleased to see he'd written about his life as an actor. His narration is flawless, and many of the anecdotes are delightful. The incisive and deep analysis of Shakespeare's work is invaluable, While some of the book was a bit too insider-y for me, a theater dilettante, it was still engaging and interesting. Spent many hours reading about some of the actors he learned from and performed with, as well, which was a nice side-project. in any case I wish Mr Beale continued success as an actor, and should he ever come to the American South, I'd be honored to host him for an afternoon.

Historia
Bunny McGarry is back – and he’d really like a nice holiday. Somewhere with hot weather and cold drinks that come with little umbrellas for reasons he never understood. A certain nun has other ideas though and instead, he finds himself dispatched to London to find Sean Malone, a runaway teenager who doesn’t know his mother hasn’t got long left to live. The only leads Bunny has are a last-known address for the deadbeat dad Sean had gone in search of, and some letters the teenager had sent to his mum, one of which included a picture of him with the current heavyweight champion of the world.

This is one of my favorite of the Dublin Trilogy books. A unique twist in the usual Bunny books, full of great characters and real stakes. As ever it’s very funny and full of warmth and heart. A good addition to the ever-sprawling series of books.

Historia
George Smiley has left the Circus. With the wreckage of the West’s spy war against the Soviets strewn across Europe, he has eyes only for a more peaceful life. And indeed, with his marriage more secure than ever, there is a rumor that George Smiley might almost be happy. But Control has other plans. A Russian agent has defected in the most unusual of circumstances, and the man he was sent to kill in London is nowhere to be found. Smiley reluctantly agrees to one last simple task: interview Szusanna, a Hungarian émigré and employee of the missing man, and sniff out a lead.

Harkaway nails it
Revisado: 11-18-24
Not surprised, given who his father is and the quality of his other books :) Very much enjoyed this and it has the same rhythm and depth of Le Carré’s work. A rich, dense and ultimately satisfying look into grief, spy-craft and the nature of power (personal and state).

Historia
Meet Laszlo, eight-hundred-year-old demon and Hell’s least productive Curse Keeper. From his office beneath Midtown, he oversees the Drakeford Curse, which involves a pathetic family upstate and a mysterious black monolith. It’s a sexy enough assignment—colonial origins, mutating victims, et cetera—but Laszlo has no interest in maximizing the curse’s potential; he’d rather sunbathe in Ibiza, quaff martinis, and hustle the hustlers on Manhattan’s subway.

Pleasant Surprise
Revisado: 11-09-24
Bought this purely because I thought the cover was cool (I know!). It took several chapters for me to get into the rhythm of the writing, but once I was in I really enjoyed it. I liked the globe-trotting aspect very much, and the characters all had a warmth and depth that I appreciated. The story was complex and interesting, and there are plenty of surprises. At times it is laugh out loud funny, others gross and scary, but overall it’s full of good humor, warmth and real charm. I look forward to future installments, and if that’s not on offer, future books from Mr Neff.

Something unlike a lot of the horror novels I’ve enjoyed. Sprawling and wooly, there’s A LOT going on here and all of it is very interesting and unusual. The whole novel has a freshness to it I enjoyed a lot.

What an absolutely riveting and fascinating look into a group of men who caused the despicable Nazis so much pain and irritation. Many of these men helped inspire Ian Fleming’s James Bond….great book.
