Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

desire & humility
Revisado: 08-19-24
Through the personal story of Joe Rance, the author shows us that some, perhaps all, great endeavors in life require a reliance on others with a mix of altruism, that drives one to be his best, no matter the hardship.

Historia
The Bodies of Others is about how we came to the harrowing civilizational crossroads at which we find ourselves—engaged in a war against vast impersonal forces with limitless power over our lives and which threaten the freedoms we have always taken for granted. In her most provocative book yet, Dr. Naomi Wolf shows how these forces—from Big Tech and Big Pharma to the CCP and our oligarchical elites—seized upon two years of COVID-19 panic in sinister new ways, to not only undermine our republic but to fundamentally reorient human relations.

A must read for everyone!
Revisado: 11-01-22
Unfortunately, most will not have enough of an open mind to consider Ms. Wolf's insight and wisdom. She speaks to the broadest spectrum of humanity, nay, humanity itself. We owe a reading and passing on of this book to all future generations, especially our own children and grandchildren. We must not forget the grave inhumanity most of us blithely leveled against our family, friends, neighbour's and society.

Historia
In Acedia & Me, the acclaimed author Kathleen Norris explicates and demystifies the forgotten but utterly relevant concept of acedia, a term that has often been understood as spiritual sloth, but really signifies the serious malady of being unable to care. With great insight and candor, Norris explores acedia through the geography of her life as a writer; her marriage and the challenges of commitment in the midst of grave illness; and her keen interest in the monastic tradition.

I can't say that I would recommend this book to everyone, but if you struggle with anything resembling anxiety, depression, despair, or procrastination (both spiritual &/or manual), the author may just say something about her battles with acedia that will help you embrace your vocation of living the quotidian (daily, day-to-day).

Historia
In The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray investigates the dangers of ‘woke’ culture and the rise of identity politics. In lively, razor-sharp prose he examines the most controversial issues of our moment: sexuality, gender, technology and race, with interludes on the Marxist foundations of ‘wokeness’, the impact of tech and how, in an increasingly online culture, we must relearn the ability to forgive.

A must read whether you agree with him or not.
Revisado: 11-02-20
It is not possible to approach any idea with a completely open mind. We are all formed, in some way, by the experiences and judgments of our lives up to that point. As Dilbert creator Scott Adams says, we see things through our own filter.
Though I am a very traditional Catholic, if I did not read (listen) to The Madness of the Crowd simply because the author is a homosexual, I would have been deprived of his thoughtful considerations of our present discord.
My chief takeaways are:
1. We can better understand the intangible complexity of transgenderism by first struggling with the tangible difficulties facing the intersex person.
2. Resolution of conflicts is made almost impossible in the age of social media and historical tweet mining (leading to personal attack and distruction). This has replaced the more human resolution by peaceful assembly, as witnessed by de Tocqueville in 1830's America.

Historia
Michael Shellenberger has been fighting for a greener planet for decades. He helped save the world’s last unprotected redwoods. He co-created the predecessor to today’s Green New Deal. And he led a successful effort by climate scientists and activists to keep nuclear plants operating, preventing a spike of emissions. But in 2019, as some claimed "billions of people are going to die", contributing to rising anxiety, including among adolescents, Shellenberger decided that he needed to speak out to separate science from fiction.

Good from a secular perspective
Revisado: 07-09-20
Mr. Shellenberger's book is excellent! He is operating from a renaissance humanist perspective, which sees man as a special species with a love of nature.
He doesn't address evil as such, since he's a secularist. But he does recognize love, and that is important. This does not make him any less of a scientist or researcher. He has the experience and understanding to back up his thesis.
Please read this book if you love the earth and your fellow man.

Historia
In Tom Wolfe's hands, the strange saga of American architecture in the 20th century makes for both high comedy and intellectual excitement. This is his sequel to The Painted Word, the book that caused such a furor in the art world five years before. Once again Wolfe shows how social and intellectual fashions have determined aesthetic form in our time and how willingly the creators have abandoned personal vision and originality in order to work a la mode.
