Hawke's narrator is a young man in torment, disgusted with himself after the collapse of his marriage, still half hoping for a reconciliation that would allow him to forgive himself and move on as he clumsily, and sometimes hilariously, tries to manage the wreckage of his personal life with whiskey and sex. What saves him is theater: in particular, the challenge of performing the role of Hotspur in a production of Henry IV under the leadership of a brilliant director, helmed by one of the most electrifying - and narcissistic - Falstaff's of all time.

Enjoyed it quite a bit except for weird - and unnecessary- sex scene.
Revisado: 07-05-24
I like Ethan Hawke as a actor and I was surprised how much I liked the story, the language & performance. I agree with the reviewers who mention liking the inclusion of the character performing in a play while the story unfolds. Thought the story would have been better without the weird sex scene and Bukowski-like drunken naval gazing. But, still liked it.

Historia
Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas". As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived, and famously testified that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who've long forgotten her.

Not nearly as good as "Gone Girl"
Revisado: 07-05-24
Very disappointed. The story doesn't have the depth of "Gone Girl"..its just flat. I also didn't understand the protagonist and I found parts just distasteful.

Historia
Maria Bamford is a comedian’s comedian (an outsider among outsiders) and has forever fought to find a place to belong. From struggling with an eating disorder as a child of the 1980s, to navigating a career in the arts (and medical debt and psychiatric institutionalization), she has tried just about every method possible to not only be a part of the world, but to want to be a part of it. In Bamford’s “trademark blend of disarming intimacy and dark whimsy” (Publishers Weekly), Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult brings us on a quest to participate in something.

Like the book better than her stand-up
Revisado: 03-27-24
I decided to listen to this after hearing her talk about her book on the podcast "Blocks". I had only seen some of her stand-up and I thought it was ok but this book is very entertaining. Her voice and the narration are cartoonish (in a good way) and she is actually an interesting person. A couple "progressive" moments made me roll my eyes a bit but I found her so endearing it wasn't a distraction from the book.

Historia
In the Dream House is Carmen Maria Machado's engrossing and wildly innovative account of a relationship gone bad, and a bold dissection of the mechanisms and cultural representations of psychological abuse. Tracing the full arc of a harrowing relationship with a charismatic but volatile woman, Machado struggles to make sense of how what happened to her shaped the person she was becoming. And it's that struggle that gives the book its original structure: each chapter is driven by its own narrative trope - the haunted house, erotica, the bildungsroman....

Surprisingly interesting and beautifully written
Revisado: 11-11-23
I found myself enchanted by the way the author uses these different tropes (?), one after the other, to tell her story of an abusive relationship with a woman. It is like poetry - but not the kind that you spend so much time unraveling to understand it's meaning - because, in this case, the writer is so natural about it that her expressive language gives the impression of a dreamlike, intimate story. I am usually not into what is referred to as "queer literature" but, unlike many books/essays in the genre that are so distorted by theory nonsense, I found this to be such a thoughtful & meaningful story.

When Kurt Cobain died by his own hand in April 1994, it was an act of will that typified his short, angry, inspired life. Veteran music journalist Charles R. Cross fuses his intimate knowledge of the Seattle music scene with his deep compassion for his subject in this extraordinary story of artistic brilliance and the pain that extinguished it.

Revisado: 09-04-23
I liked this so much more than I thought I would. You really get a sense of the people & places. Cobain's story of the pain of growing up with divorce, with parents who start new families right away, is very relatable. He was one of the millions of aimless, broken men searching for a purpose but was also a musical genius. A kind of person who it is hard to imagine they would have lived very long.
