the book is great, and the reader does a decent job considering how large the cast is. However, much of the book's recording has the high end cut off and the reader sounds muffled. it makes the book hard to hear at reasonable volume levels.

Tip for those who don't enjoy this narrator

Try increasing the playback speed. I listened to this book at 1.10x and it made a world of difference. That is a tip to remember for any audiobook that you are not enjoying, try increasing the playback speed before giving up on the book.

As for the trilogy, I'm now well into the second book in this series, and it's ok. It's not as gripping as the farseer trilogy, but it is good enough to listen too. I look forward to returning to Fitz & the Fool, but this is proving to be entertaining enough, and the magical ships are wonderful.

It is frustrating how even when someone has been proven to be wrong in this book, they still stubbornly refuse to change their mind/opinion about something. (Very true to life though, just look at politics.) Like the whole Vestrit family, none of them ever seem to change their mind. It does make it a struggle for me to like any of the characters very much.

Anyway, give the series a go, the ships are wonderful, and if you find the narrator difficult to listen too, try increasing the speed. I honestly wonder if someone messed up the recording, and it's playing slower than it should.

This is a great book that I read once before nearly 20 years ago. I had forgotten enough that it was almost like reading it for the first time.

Now, I have seen many reviews here that seem to be written by people who are far more familiar with the work than I. They seem to be disappointed in the narration of the book, mostly due to name pronunciations. fair enough, I'm sorry that this spoiled the book for them. however, if you are not familiar enough with the book to notice something like that, then it is an excellent book, and I highly recommend it.

I have also seen some reviews complaining about the narrator's style. Things like the accents, and...the emphasized words. personally I really enjoyed his style. All I can say is play the preview and decide for yourself.

Finally, if you check my history, you will see that I rarely take the time to post a review, and only when I feel strongly about something. In this case, it is that I thought most of the reviews did a disservice, because they were obviously coming from a too personal perspective, and not thinking of the many people who don't know how the Magician's childhood friend's name is spelt.

My advise, if you aren't bothered by the narration in the sample, then get the book, it's very good.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. It does an excellent job of putting the events of the war into order. So it's a good documentary wrapped up in a great story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Winds of War?

Well, considering how well the events of the war are known I don't think I am spoiling anything if I say Pearl Harbour.

What about Kevin Pariseau’s performance did you like?

Personally I'm happy if the performer does a good enough job that I don't think about them and can concentrate on the story. This performer is more than passable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It's far too long for a single sitting, but I couldn't wait to get back to it. I was building a fence at the time, so I was listening all day long, and didn't tire of it.

Any additional comments?

This book only covers the war until Pearl Harbour. The sequel, War and Rememberance covers the rest. This series is so good that I wish there were more. It easily makes my top five favourites, and I'm an avid reader. I have listened to more than 500 audio books and hundreds more printed and ebooks.

Interesting story

Several reviewers have complained about the pagan aspects of this novel, I'm not a pagan myself and found it a little boring at times, but in my opinion it fits the storyline well. The kind of people who are likely to prosper in a world where guns, electricity, and combustion engines suddenly stop working are the people who spent a lot of time doing things like horse riding, gardening, and mock fighting with medieval weapons. The pagan community is full of those kinds of people, so having a major story arc in the novel following a pagan group of people makes sense.

What the people complaining about the pagans fail to mention is the other major story arc following a group of people who are lead by an ex-military type who spends a lot of time doing things like hunting & hiking in the wilderness.

So, if your afraid that your Higher Being of choice is going to punish you for reading a book with such words as pagan, wiccan, goddess and witch in it, then you should stay away from this book. Otherwise, you just have to remember that you spend as much time listening to the thoughts of the jarhead which are as full of militaristic thoughts as the witches' mind is full of pagan thoughts. The author is not trying to convince you to become a pagan any more than he is trying to convince you to join the army. He's just doing a pretty good job of getting inside the head of a pagan and an ex-jarhead.

Quite a wonderful series, I'm just finishing up the 7th (newest available, but book 8 should be coming soon) book now. I'm Anxiously looking for something new to replace this series, but I just know that I'll have trouble. The story line is great, the characters feel like friends, or perhaps comrades in arms, & the narration is simply wonderful. One of those voice actors that make you forget what gender they are when they are reading the part of a character who is another gender.

If I had one complaint about these books it's that they are too short. I actually bought the last book because I finished book 6 about 1/2 way through my billing cycle. I've never done that before in the 4 years I've been an audible member. I've also never reviewed a book on audible before, that should tell you something.

The introduction of each book by the Author is a nice touch too. I just wish he came back at the end of the book to talk about it some more, since there is no longer anything to spoil.

Before I go looking for a longer series, let me just indulge myself & make a comment for those who have listened to these books:

Blink, blink, bliiiink- that made me giggle :)

Edit: that'd be right the next book is out & it's only 10 hours. What to do? what to do?
