Awful. I couldn't finish it.
Revisado: 10-23-24
Yes, I know there are horrible people in the world. But this novel is triggering for anyone who has been around domestic violence and the descriptions of rape and cruelty are unnecessarily long and painful. I had to put the book down about halfway through.
The writing is a bit more theatrical and flowery than necessary, and felt like it was trying hard to be Faulkner -esque. I picked it up because it was a Pulitzer winning author. But life is too short to finish bad books.

Nature holds the answers for Raynor and her husband, Moth. After walking 630 miles homeless along The Salt Path, the windswept and wild English coastline now feels like their home. And despite Moth's terminal diagnosis, against all medical odds, he seems revitalized in nature - outside, they discover that anything is possible. Now, life beyond The Salt Path awaits. As they return to four walls, the sense of home is illusive and returning to normality is proving difficult - until an incredible gesture by someone who reads their story changes everything.

Nonfiction is not my jam. but this is amazing
Revisado: 09-07-24
The Salt Path is one of my favorite books. I love the author's description of nature and could listen to her observations all day.
So I thought I would give this a try.
This is the story of what happened immediately after walking theSalt Path, how Ray and Moth began to rebuild their lives, and find their connection to a new community. I also think it is a lovely reminder for any middle aged folks out there how important it is to keep moving forward in life, putting one foot in front of the other. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Entertaining, but needed editing
Revisado: 04-26-24
First, the audio book performance was pretty good (despite some accents that were less than perfect), and the variation in voices made the book roll along.
This is the story of a young boy traumatized by losing his mother in a bizarre way, and stunting his growth for a lifetime.
SPOILERS sort of:
The coincidences in the story made it hard to read. People have panned this for the language being juvenile, but I felt like the thought processes and language and inability to logically cope with his mother's death were reasonably authentic.
The story would have been much stronger if the author had left off the last few chapters. Theo's soliloquy went on and on and was pedantic.
The connection to Hobie was never explained as well as I would have liked.
But overall the story moved on well and was a decent read. Not sure I would recommend it.

Historia
Millions of people climb the grand marble staircase to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art every year. But only a select few have unrestricted access to every nook and cranny. They’re the guards who roam unobtrusively in dark blue suits, keeping a watchful eye on the two million square foot treasure house. Caught up in his glamourous fledgling career at The New Yorker, Patrick Bringley never thought that he’d be one of them.

Wonderful. The River Why for city-folks
Revisado: 01-18-24
The River Why is a 1983 novel by David James Duncan. While it starts off as a fishing story, The River Why turns into the story of a young person struggling to come to grips with the modern world.
Similarly, this book is a coming to terms with the chaos of life and learning to find a way forward that makes sense for the author.
I loved the writing style of both. I loved that this Audible version had the slow measured, meditative voice of the author. I loved his ability to connect art to life lessons (without feeling pedantic)and explore the significance of each exquisite piece.I bought it for family members I liked it so much. I don't normally re-read books. I feel I can come back to this again whenever I need to process difficult things, to find a connection to the good in the world.
Thank you Mr. Bringley, for writing this lovely book. I highly recommend it!

Saul Indian Horse is in critical condition. Sitting feeble in an alcoholism treatment facility, he is told that sharing his story will help relieve his agony. Though skeptical, he embarks on a heartbreaking journey from the present - and into the woods of Northern Ontario, where his life began in a snowy Ojibway camp. The tale that follows is one of great pain and great determination from Richard Wagamese, an author who "never seems to waste a shot" ( New York Times).

well done, but slightly revisionist
Revisado: 10-28-23
I liked this book and she writes shockingly well. I would note that I think she enjoys shocking you... and this is the 3rd book with a similar style--beautiful tight wording and then $hit thrown in for shock value. And I mean literally... she loves to describe the scatalogical in detail. It has become somewhat of her signature. Also, I found it improbable that the character would really express sympathy for indigenous people. so many historical fiction novels these days take that revisionist view... that somehow the main character knew better and did better than others of their time. I am not sure I buy that.
All that aside, the book is lovely and makes you think, and is a fresh new take on the pilgrim's journey.

I enjoyed this, and reading about Ethiopia and expats. Too much medical description for my taste. I feel like the plotting was very tight, but almost too tight or too contrived to fit all together. Still, I definitely enjoyed reading this and would recommend.
