Warm believable characters
Revisado: 01-23-25
A paranormal story with realistic like able characters, character development and thoughtfulness. There bare bones of the plot are a little sparse. I will not say this is Card’s best. But I gave it a five because I’d give his best six or seven. I enjoyed this, and the thinking about people it made me do

Gripping but difficult
Revisado: 06-29-23
I stopped listening numerous times because the story was too hard to listen to, but kept coming back to it and I am glad that I did.
It is read by the author, who has the accent she has and is conveying the level of emotion she feels is appropriate to the subject matter. I’ll grant that she sometimes gushes. But I’m not at all sure I would have preferred a dry rendition of the fact alone. I’m pretty sure I would not have gotten through a sparse historical account. The author clearly had access to Elizabeth’s journals and an abundance of things she wrote in which she told about how she felt.
It is scary to see how far we have come and sometimes to think about how far we have still to go.
Well worth the read or listen.

Best Yet
Revisado: 08-02-22
I have enjoyed the Misewa Saga though I initially had a hard time getting into the first book. Unlike the Narnia books, a great deal happens in these books that is not in the world of Misewa—but that is good. I was so grateful that this book was released just after I had finished The Great Bear so that I didn’t have to wait. It feels to me like each book in the saga has gotten better than the one before. I am eager for the author to write more but I am also satisfied with the conclusions of this book.

They each feel disconnected, from their culture and each other, and struggle to fit in at school and at their new home—until they find a secret place, walled off in an unfinished attic bedroom. A portal opens to another reality, Askí, bringing them onto frozen, barren grounds, where they meet Ochek (Fisher).

It took me a while to get into this but once we managed to go through the portal it was very special. I assume that the words in Cree (?) were correctly pronounced and they added a lot.
Well worth reading.

Meaningful talk about prayer
Revisado: 05-21-22
Orson Scott Card is a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints and a science fiction writer. I am a Pentecostal and evangelical Christian. We have significant theological differences. Nonetheless I return again and again to this series because the discussion contained throughout the books of what it is like to hear the voice of God resonates deeply with me.

A Masterpiece from a favorite author
Revisado: 05-03-22
This short work is an amazing celebration of family life with all of its joys and sorrows. If you think of Orson Scott Card solely as a science fiction writer you have been missing something of his depth and breadth but this piece is exceptional even for him. Wow!

The lyric poetry of this book made me go buy it in paper so I could refer back to certain passages, a thing I do rarely. It’s a special book.

Oh wow!
Stories I never knew, and singing by an old favorite. The combination is fantastic. And it explains some songs that had memorable special words that hit a place in my heart but which always seemed a bit cryptic. I am grateful to Audible for producing this.

A Valuable and Value Filled Memoir
Revisado: 04-18-18
All memoirs involve people telling the story of their lives from their own point of view which often involves explanations of why they think what they did was the right thing to do.
This book has that but it also has careful reflection on what virtue in leadership and in public service entails, and how Comey came to value those things and why he values them. It really is an extraordinary book about civic virtue.

Should be required reading for adults dealing with teenagers
Revisado: 01-19-18
I’d say require it for teenagers but I’m not sure that increases the likelihood that they will read it.
The book puts you inside the mind of a girl struggling with OCD, which could be so desperately sad as to be unendurable. But it is also witty and tender and ultimately enjoyable. So glad I made the time to read it.
