Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Great story telling about a point in history we all need to revisit.
Revisado: 03-08-24
This book should be a required reading. The story, yet so classic, feels as if it could have taken place yesterday. The book is perfectly narrated by a voice that pulls the listener deeply into the story. I had the added pleasure of listening while in our nation's capital and felt as though I could see some of the events depicted in the book, happening around me.
This book followed Team of Rivals on my reading list which made for a great pairing.

Historia
The never-before-told full story of the history-changing break-in at the FBI office in Media, Pennsylvania, by a group of unlikely activists - quiet, ordinary, hardworking Americans - that made clear the shocking truth and confirmed what some had long suspected, that J. Edgar Hoover had created and was operating, in violation of the U.S. Constitution, his own shadow Bureau of Investigation.

A must read for anyone going into politics or law enforcement
Revisado: 11-28-23
This book cut through the mysticism surrounding the FBI and provided a historic view into a past we as American citizens pray will never re-emerge. The book slants to the left on political views, but has enough historic value as to appeal to anyone interested in the history of the FBI. The book is well narrated with no distraction aspects of the narrator's voice. very well done take on a story every American needs to know. this should be a required read for anyone interested in law enforcement and politics.

Historia
As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

I just can't finish this book
Revisado: 06-05-22
This is a well written story I want to know about an amazing figure in American history. unfortunately his story is under told.
I'm busy and figured an audio book would be the best way to hear about Mr. Douglass.
the book itself is outstanding as it tells his unbelievable story. The narration, however, made it unpalatable for me.
Let me explain. The narrator has a smooth, silky voice. His pronunciation is clear and his voice is relaxing.... all except one thing. He pronounces his Ds and Ts like he's trying to lightly spit a small bit of food, or a little pieces of debris from the tip of his tongue. As polished as he is, something tells me the issue isn't with him, but lies with the direction he was given. I believe it's supposed to be relaxing and placid.
However, as I listened I found my internal dialogue arguing, "maybe if I just use it as background noise, I'll get through the book." and, "but I'm supposed to listen, its an audio book, that's the point."
In the end, I couldn't hang. It was a waste of a credit and now I'm just reading the book.

In need of serious updating
Revisado: 08-17-21
This book has a well written message that is lost by the glamorization of now infamous people. Using the likes of Rudy Giuliani and Christopher Columbus as heros of success discredited the author and almost made me stop reading. in today's time, this is like praising Hitler. I will not recommend this out of touch book without a much needed update.

This audiobook is the solution that leaders at every level need.

Not a bad read
Revisado: 06-09-21
This book gets down to the basics and does not dazzle with much psychology behind leadership models. It's more, "if they..." "then do this...". This book creates a good foundation to move on to more complex leadership models.

Historia
In 2010, the words “earthquake swarm” entered the lexicon in Oklahoma. That same year, a trove of Michael Jackson memorabilia—including his iconic crystal-encrusted white glove—was sold at auction for over $1 million to a guy who was, officially, just the lowly forestry minister of the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea. And in 2014, Ukrainian revolutionaries raided the palace of their ousted president and found a zoo of peacocks, gilded toilets, and a floating restaurant modeled after a Spanish galleon.

Very informative book on oil and gas
Revisado: 05-06-21
This book was well narrated and used Rachel Maddow's signature way of taking seemingly unrelated incidents and colliding them to create a bigger picture.
The book made me think about the impact of large organizations and their manipulation of governments.
it's a good read and an even better listen.

You may know W. Kamau Bell from his new Emmy-nominated hit show on CNN, United Shades of America. Or maybe you've read about him in The New York Times, which called him "the most promising new talent in political comedy in many years." Or maybe from The New Yorker fawning over his brand of humor writing: "Bell's gimmick is intersectional progressivism: he treats racial, gay, and women's issues as inseparable."

Listened to this on a road trip and felt like W. Kamau Bell was in the passenger seat of my car. This is left wing comedy from a Gen X, Pearl Jam loving, black man's point of view.

Much better than the movie as books usually are. This book was great for me and my 13 year old son on a 3 day road trip. the trip unfortunately ended before the book was over. We made the last hour of the book our movie night and sat in the dark while blasting it through our speakers. It made for a memorable father, son experience!
