20 hours of intensity, 1 hr dissapointment

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 04-25-06

As other reviewers stated, all but the ending had the making of an all time masterpiece. Unlike some other reviewers, I thought the writing style was superb. DeMille seems to have the knack to keep a listener captivated with either humorous anecdotes or intense suspense detail. The ride of a terrorist infiltrating the US countryside was chilling and somewhat believeable which helped to keep me in tune. Flashbacks into the past throughout the story help to piece together the storyline and I was left with a lasting impression of both the captive and captor. Again, without giving away the ending, it was just dissapointing to say the least. I guess 20 hours of heart thumping adventure outweighs the 1 hour of a dissapointing ending. With that said, I went on to read "Nightfall", a sequal to The Lions Game and had high hopes for it. From what I have heard, DeMille intends to continue the Lion's game saga in a future novel and I have the intention to listen to that one as well.

Long but captivating

I'm a fan of the Da Vinci Code et. all and was looking for a suspenseful listen when purchasing this book. At first the narrator seemed to be lying on his couch reading what would seem to be a very intreguing start to the novel. Eventually the character count increased and the male narrator was able to fit the parts of all characters, whether they had a foreign accent or female tone. Fairly unique storyline about a man who tries to seek out his erased identity. At times I expected too much and did not feel as though I was given the full explanation as to the main characters (Hal Ambler) past, but Ludlum gets by this by giving the listener what they need to hear in order to figure it out. Interesting twist to top off the ending which was a relief from occasional slow middle. I usually like longer storylines with more detail, but this one could have been clipped a bit to reduce losing focus. Overall it was a good read with enough suspense to satisfy my satiation for it.

British Bonus

I had a bad listening experience in the past by a british narrator, but this one changed my perspective. This listen was a bit slow for me at first, but then kicked into high gear by midway through. The storyline leads the reader into various avenues of detective sluthing alongside the main character Harry Barnett. Just when you thought you finished putting the puzzle together, you flip it over and there is another. The narrator has to put on many hats and does a good job at chosing the correct one per character. Intreuging wtih a nice finish. I am into only nearly 20 audiobooks, and although I have yet to find one to surpass The DaVinci Code, Into the Blue ranks up there. 4 stars.

2 Thumbs up

Dan Browns comprehensive writing style is not only captivating it is intelligent. I feel as though I could produce the movie with the images in my head that he conjures up. If you have any satiation for feeding your mind with engaging action, then this is a must listen. Whether you already listened (or read) the Da Vinci Code is irrevalent. Once you read this it will either make you want to follow up with the Da Vinci Code or else applaud the work of Dan Brown for giving you more of what you long for. It was a bit odd to have the main character Robert Langdon in both stories, however if you can get past this minor distraction, then you will be glad to took the time to listen to both.

Abrupt ending

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-20-05

Some background first: My basis for downloading this book was partly from the positive reviews, my taste for thought provoking "horror", and willing to apply my free read to a costly book.
With that stated, I thought the book was too expensive (at least for those that have to pay the list price) for the dissapointing ending. I agree with some of the other reviewers that it was a bit lenghthy and found at times there was not the need for some of the uncaptivating verbose writing style.
One the positive note, the storyline was a bit unique and kept me interested enough to finish the 21 hours worth. The narrator also did a good job at reading through the marathon. I fear that if it was not for her enticing voice variation, that I would have passed out from listening exhaustion.
Lesson learned: Don't pick one of the most expensive books to download just because it was free from a promotional offer.
