Historia
Orphaned at birth, Oliver Twist is born into the grimmest of 19th century English workhouses with a life of grinding poverty ahead of him. But the boy is a fighter and after being evicted from the workhouse for asking for 'more' and surviving a stint as an undertaker’s assistant, he walks many miles to London and finds a whole new life with a gang of young pickpockets led by the Artful Dodger and their guardian Fagin.

Thanks for the Memory
Revisado: 11-12-24
I actually sang the theme song for this book as a kid on TV when I was ~ 12 years old, "As Long as [She] needs me". Not until I listened to this book did I understand the story or the fact that it was actually [He]. As a boy with a high soprano voice I nailed it. Now I know the story and Mom and Rose helped Oliver survive and thrive in spite of his circumstances.

Historia
They began operations out of England in the spring of '43. They flew their Flying Fortresses almost daily against strategic targets in Europe in the name of freedom. Their astonishing courage and appalling losses earned them the name that resounds in the annals of aerial warfare and made the "Bloody Hundredth" a legend. Harry H. Crosby—soon to be portrayed by Anthony Boyle in the miniseries Masters of the Air developed by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg—arrived with the very first crews, and left with the very last.

"12 O'Clock High" Tutorial
Revisado: 11-12-24
If you've seen movie "12 O'Clock High" with Gregory Peck this book spells out the B-17 Bomber mission in great detail on the ground as well as in the air. Being a B-52 Navigator/EWO later Plot I appreciated every aspect of this book and felt like I was there in the seat. Thanks to Harry and Chris for bringing the US Air Corp/USAF bomber mission into focus for us all.

Historia
On a moonless night in January 1991, a dozen US aircraft appeared in the skies over Baghdad. To the Iraqi air defenses, the planes seemed to come from nowhere. Each aircraft was more than 60 feet in length and with a wingspan of 40 feet, yet its radar footprint was the size of a ball bearing. Here was the first extensive combat application of Stealth technology. And it was devastating.

While the story line is entertaining the carrying out life on Mars (LIKE HUMANS ON EARTH) and the other planets without explaining the oxygen deprived atmosphere isn't even believable. It's weak at best. Unbelievable from the start.

Best So Far
Revisado: 05-17-24
I'm a USAF Retired Command Pilot who flew B-52s, C-141s and 25 other aircraft. As a Bomber Crew Member, History Major, German Speaker and Psychologist I can relate to everyone of these stories. I think the narrator (Joe) did an excellent job changing his voice and accent to match the historical speaker's tone and inflection. These were some of the most detailed accounts I'd ever heard about the war and people's reactions. Don even delves into the mindset of the German people being bombed and the POWs' struggles. Excellent book for everyone that wants to understand war in real time. The breakout of Clark Gable and Chuck Yeager were excellent studies. I'd read a lot about Jimmy Stewart so I thought his story was a little thin. I heard no mention of his PTSD and his use of that in the "It's a Wonderful Life" bridge scene, which of course won him the Oscar, and would have made this book perfect.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Great Story of the Army CINC and 2 Term President
Revisado: 04-23-24
Ron Chernow does a great job with this documentary of H.U. Grant known as U.S. Grant. It's great to read this to get the other side of the story on all the battles fought in the Civil War. I relearned much about how grant fought after the war for reconstruction against the KKK fighting for survival against the carpetbaggers who wanted to exploit the southerners and how it took federal troops to keep the peace.

Historia
The legacy of General Nathan Bedford Forrest is deeply divisive. Best known for being accused of war crimes at the Battle of Fort Pillow and for his role as first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan - an organization he later denounced - Forrest has often been studied as a military figure, but never before studied as a fascinating individual who wrestled with the complex issues of his violent times. Bust Hell Wide Open is a comprehensive portrait of Nathan Bedford Forrest as a man: his achievements, failings, reflections, and regrets.

The Rest of the Story
Revisado: 04-23-24
You always hear about Forrest being the Grand Wizard of the KKK but this tells who he really was and even explains why the KKK existed then, to fight the carpetbaggers who wanted to kill all the previous CSA soldiers in spite of their parole, and how the KKK changed over the centuries; but that's a small part of the book. Forrest was feared by the Union Army because he was Awesome at what he did, He was the same rank as Lee and the author notes that, if Forrest had professional military training at West Point as Lee did, the South would have won the war. In addition, the author brings out the fact that Forrest guaranteed freedom to all whose blacks who fought for him and many of them did and stayed to help him on his plantation after the war.

Historia
Mortally wounded in battle when he was only 31, the dashing J. E. B. Stuart, the South's "plumed warrior knight", stands with Stonewall Jackson as one of the Confederacy's most revered martyrs. Union General John Sedgwick called him "the greatest cavalryman ever foaled in America". Jeffry D. Wert, however, offers a more balanced assessment in this comprehensive biography.

The Great Partnership has the power to change how we think about Confederate strategic decision-making and the value of personal relationships among senior leaders responsible for organizational survival. Those relationships in the Confederate high command were particularly critical for victory, especially the one that existed between the two great Army of Northern Virginia generals.
