Loved the narration. This story is timeless. We listen to it every Christmas. The movies are good, but the book is so much better. The narrator had the perfect accent.

Historia
Long ago, the world fell into twilight, when the great empires of old consumed each other in sorcerous cataclysms. In the south, the Star Towers fell, swallowed by the sea, while the black glaciers descended upon the northern holdfasts, entombing the cities of Min-Ceruth in ice and sorcery. Then from the ancient empire of Menekar, the paladins of Ama came, putting every surviving sorcerer to the sword and cleansing their taint from the land. The pulse of magic slowed, fading like the heartbeat of a dying man. But after a thousand years, it has begun to quicken again.

It’s okay.
Revisado: 04-08-24
I found the story very difficult to follow. I like the overall plot, but the constant shifting between characters was confusing. I think just focusing on one main character would have made the stories better. Overall, it was okay.

Haunting!
Revisado: 01-13-24
I could not stop listening to this book. I know it is about the author’s experience as an abused child as well as a victim of sexual abuse within her religion, but I deeply felt that this was my story too. I was also abused, joined a cult at 18 years old, and then finally developed the power of discernment to see the abuse within a church that I had joined. I left at age 28 and I’m so glad that I am out. I related to the author as she also grew up and grew in wisdom. The “outside” world is often much kinder than being in the cults. I was so very lucky to marry a good man and we raised our kids outside of organized religion, but we finally did join a Methodist church. God bless this author. This abuse happens across the spectrum of many religions.

Historia
This third and final volume of the unexpurgated diaries of Sir Henry 'Chips' Channon begins as the Second World War is turning in the Allies' favour. It ends with a prematurely aged Chips descending into poor health but still socially active and able to turn a pointed phrase about the political events that swirl around him and the great and the good with whom he mingles.

I enjoyed the book…not the man.
Revisado: 01-28-23
I listened to all three volumes of the diaries. The narration was excellent. The author also did a wonderful job of compiling the multiple volumes of diaries. I became addicted to listening to the endless gossipy details. But, at the end of all these listening hours, I ended up not liking Chips. He was an amazingly shallow man! He lived for royalty and partying. Entry after entry of lunches, suppers, balls. His stamina must of been amazing. Chips was so happy being rich that you almost admired his complete snobbery. He lived in the center of London, during a time of momentous historical events, but he seems to let all that fade away as he records his relentless social life. His treatment of his parents was cruel but yet he excused himself. He, however, loved his only child so very much that it almost redeemed him. The diaries all in all are a fascinating listen.

Historia
England in the 1520s is a heartbeat from disaster. If the king dies without a male heir, the country could be destroyed by civil war. Henry VIII wants to annul his marriage of 20 years and marry Anne Boleyn. The pope and most of Europe opposes him. Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell: a wholly original man, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and opportunist, astute in reading people, and implacable in his ambition. But Henry is volatile: one day tender, one day murderous. Cromwell helps him break the opposition, but what will be the price of his triumph?

Revisado: 08-18-22
I enjoy Tudor history and loved the show on PBS, so I was really looking forward to this novel. However, I found the writing style difficult to follow. I’m sure if I was reading this novel I would have stopped. The narrator does an excellent job so I did finish the audio, but I am not sure I’ll continue on with this series.

Historia
This second volume of the best-selling diaries of Henry 'Chips' Channon takes us from the heady aftermath of the Munich agreement, when the prime minister Chips so admired was credited with having averted a general European conflagration, through the rapid unravelling of appeasement, and on to the tribulations of the early years of the Second World War. It closes with a moment of hope, as Channon, in recording the fall of Mussolini in July 1943, reflects: 'The war must be more than half over.'

Fascinating!
Revisado: 07-24-22
I have to admit - I did not like Chips Channon. He’s the ultimate snob: only interested in the rich and royalty. And his whole life is just an unending series of parties in high society. And his treatment of people he hated - including his mother - was just brutal. But….the diary entries are so fascinating! Chips seemed to be in the middle of historical events as well as delighted in dishing all the gossip. His judgment was lacking (liked the Nazis at first), but his diary entries provide information about wartime London from someone who lived there through the war. I listened to volume 1 and 2 and look forward to volume 3. This is a fascinating life story of a man who lived a life that was ultimately shallow but yet full of historical importance because Chips was a superb diarist.

As Assistant Private Secretary to four monarchs, 'Tommy' Lascelles had a ringside seat from which to observe the workings of the royal household and Downing Street during the first half of the 20th century. These fascinating diaries begin with Edward VIII's abdication and end with George VI's death and his daughter Elizabeth's Coronation. In between we see George VI at work and play, a portrait more intimate than any other previously published.

I’ve listened to this twice. I especially enjoyed hearing about the war experience from “real” people. You can learn about the war from historians, but these personal histories really drive home the cataclysmic effect this war had on the everyday lives of people.

Remember Us is a look back at the lost world of the shtetl: a wise Zayde offering prophetic and profound words to his grandson, the rich experience of Shabbos, and the treasure of a loving family. All this is torn apart with the arrival of the Holocaust, beginning a crucible fraught with twists and turns so unpredictable and surprising that they defy any attempt to find reason within them. Through the eyes of 91-year-old Holocaust survivor Martin Small, we learn that these priceless memories that are too painful to remember are also too painful to forget.

Wonderful story!
Revisado: 11-19-21
I agree with a previous reviewer who said that the story starts off slow, and then it becomes mesmerizing a few chapters in. The story of how Mr Small was saved from the concentration camp and his resultant revelation decades later on - well, almost beyond belief. I was moved to tears by this chapter. I really like how the story unfolded: the wealth of information about his life in a thriving Jewish community before the Holocaust and life after the Holocaust in the establishment of a Jewish state. The author explains that he purposely left out some of the more gruesome aspects of the concentration camps. This story was more about one man and the whole arc of his life - not just during WWII. I highly recommend this book. The narrator too was a perfect match for the tone of this book.
