Empowering Method for Learning a Language
Revisado: 01-21-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This free sample is well worth your time. I enjoyed learning general themes of the Portuguese language in a refreshing and pleasant format. The audio format is excellent. I was very tempted to use my Audible credit for a purchase before I realized it was for one lesson lasting about an hour. This method will cost over $100 in credits to listen to several lessons. That is a steep purchase price. I searched in vain for these recordings at a local library. I am guessing, that this price is beyond their budgets, too.
What did you like best about this story?
The lesson was fun. I like the emphasis on language as it is spoken in Portugal since that is where I will be traveling to.
Have you listened to any of Virginia Catmur and Paulo Santos ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is the first one.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Language learning need not be tedious nor difficult.
Any additional comments?
Thank you for providing the free sample.

Historia
The Emperor of All Maladies reveals the many faces of an iconic, shape-shifting disease that is the defining plague of our generation. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance but also of hubris, arrogance, paternalism, and misperception, all leveraged against a disease that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out "war against cancer".

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Historia
A mesmerizing, moving, and elegantly written debut novel, The Language of Flowers beautifully weaves past and present, creating a vivid portrait of an unforgettable woman whose gift for flowers helps her change the lives of others even as she struggles to overcome her own troubled past. The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it's been more useful in communicating grief, mistrust, and solitude.

Plant Lovers Will Enjoy This Story
Revisado: 04-09-16
What made the experience of listening to The Language of Flowers the most enjoyable?
I was surprised by how much I loved this audiobook. A friend of mine urged me strongly to read The Language of Flowers after I presented her with a bouquet of flowers for her birthday. I was dreading a boring encyclopedia rendition of the meaning and history of each flower and placed this far down on my will someday get to reading list. Recently, I noticed that this book was offered with my Audible membership and downloaded it in March. Today, April 9th, I finished listening after starting the recording on April 7th. The story grabbed me immediately. I was amazed and intrigued that a foster child was planting a flower garden inside of milk cartons in her room. Her homeless residence in the park impressed me deeply with this socially awkward girl’s innate desire to have a relationship with plants. I am highly introverted and have communicated intuitively through flowers ever since I was young. I was able to relate with many of Victoria’s struggles and emotional pain. This was a beautiful and moving story that compelled me to listen to every word. The author’s writing is powerful and skillful. Tara Sands is a wonderful reader. I urge every plant lover to enjoy this beautiful story.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Language of Flowers?
This book has many vivid images and fragrances of beautiful flowers that I enjoyed while listening. The weather has been cold and gloomy recently and this book brightened my mood and made me excited about the approach of warmer weather.
What does Tara Sands bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Audiobooks enable me to get boring and routine things done around the house such as laundry and chopping vegetables.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I was eager to listen to this books continuously, but that was unrealistic.
Any additional comments?
I recommend this book highly to people that love plants.

Historia
When the San José mine collapsed outside of Copiapó, Chile, in August 2010, it trapped thirty-three miners beneath thousands of feet of rock for a record-breaking sixty-nine days. After the disaster, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Héctor Tobar received exclusive access to the miners and their tales, and in Deep Down Dark, he brings them to haunting, visceral life. We learn what it was like to be imprisoned inside a mountain, understand the horror of being slowly consumed by hunger, and experience the awe of working in such a place-underground passages filled with danger.

Would you listen to Deep Down Dark again? Why?
Many of the observations and realizations were very thought provoking and remarkable making this book worth listening to again in the future.
What other book might you compare Deep Down Dark to and why?
This is unlike any other book I have ever known which makes the listening experience very interesting and rewarding.
What does Henry Leyva bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Henry Leyva is a great reader. I enjoyed his narration throughout the story.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listened to this book over the course of two weeks because I liked taking breaks to listen to something light hearted.
Any additional comments?
Ever since I heard an enthusiastic review on NPR, I have had an interest in this book. I am glad I had the opportunity to enjoy this as a great audio recording. I recommend this recording highly.

Historia
Today’s optimistic farm-to-table food culture has a dark secret: The local food movement has failed to change how we eat. It has also offered a false promise for the future of food. In his visionary New York Times best-selling book, chef Dan Barber, recently showcased on Netflix’s Chef’s Table, offers a radical new way of thinking about food that will heal the land and taste good, too. Looking to the detrimental cooking of our past, and the misguided dining of our present, Barber points to a future “third plate”.

Important book on sustainable food and farming
Revisado: 04-09-16
If you could sum up The Third Plate in three words, what would they be?
Creative sustainable cuisine
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Third Plate?
The Spanish duck farmer was fascinating.
What about Dan Barber’s performance did you like?
His thoughtfulness and reflection made me realize that farmers need not apologize for their organic and sustainable produce not meeting preconceived standards of perfection.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Eating Delicious and Sustainable Food that is Healthy for Us and the Planet
Any additional comments?
As an organic and sustainable farmer myself, this book was very important. Many farmers like me struggle with marketing our product and trying hopelessly to compare with what is offered in the conventional food system. This book made me realize that I should stop apologizing that our grass fed lambs are smaller than what comes out of feedlots from far away. Consumers and restaurants need to learn how to cook and eat all the butchered cuts so that there is less waste and a better appreciation of high quality meats. This book also validated the importance of my family's ongoing sweat equity and financial investment in growing local wheat and milling the flour on site for use by local bakeries. I hope to meet the author someday while enjoying a delicious meal at Blue Hill at Stone Barns.
