Historia
We are 40 years into the future, and London is a city in decay. John Watson has returned from medical service in the war in Afghanistan and lives by himself in a run-down part of town. On his way home from work, he stumbles upon a beaten man in the street – unconscious and completely naked. His chances of survival are minimal. The same evening, a passenger plane crashes in Richmond Park. There are several hundred victims, and Watson and the mysterious man are left to their own devices.

Loved it all. A unique take on the Holmes canon for sure, beautifully written and narrated. Answers questions I’ve always had. Scary setting especially in today’s times.

Historia
We are living in the Wild West of college sports. Name, Image and Likeness endorsements, the transfer portal, collectives, conference realignment, the powerful influence of media companies have all rendered the notion of amateur athletics a quaint relic of the past, replaced by a Brave New World where money and self-interest rule. The Price is a sweeping, in-depth, thought-provoking look at an inflection point in big-time college football.

The Sad Truth
Revisado: 02-15-25
I play fantasy football but never deeply followed the college sport and wanted to broaden my knowledge. This book did that- I began to understand (after the fact the) the ESPN stories about the possible end of college football based on things that were going on at the time and written about here. I think the research is credible and deep; the presentation is that of a good story but woven through our true though unfortunate history and present day circumstances. As the rapper says “ It’s all about the Benjamins 🤑”

Historia
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Gildart Jackson’s voice could get me through anything. Lots of surprises, great attention to detail in the character’s speech patterns and how they think and behave. Mysteries to be solved as the series progresses- can’t wait!

Tour de force performance!
Revisado: 11-02-24
Narrator Shayna Small took fantastical plotting merged with raw American history and turned it into 10+ magical hours. Her range of voices and emotions , including her singing voice , brought this complex story to life. I’m reading the author’s previous book next for more of this great collaboration. Beautifully done!

Historia
On the border between Valdemar and the deadly Pelagirs Forest, the gryphon hero Kelvren returns from a near-fatal self-sacrifice that won him the approval of Valdemar's ground troops, but caused a diplomatic crisis. Frustrated by his lack of a hero's welcome, Kelvren is talked into helping with an expedition by his old friend, Firesong. Firesong struggles with his own age and mortality, and he intends to solve a vast mystery at the center of legendary Lake Evendim as his crowning achievement.

Historia
A major poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906) was one of the first African American writers to garner international recognition in the wake of emancipation. In this definitive biography, the first full-scale life of Dunbar in half a century, Gene Andrew Jarrett offers a revelatory account of a writer whose Gilded Age celebrity as the "poet laureate of his race" hid the private struggles of a man who, in the words of his famous poem, felt like a "caged bird" that sings.

Left me wanting more depth .
Revisado: 10-22-24
I did not do previous research into Mr. Dunbar’s life and was unfamiliar with his work , other than what our teachers gave us for Black History Month. I’m left feeling I still don’t have great insight into the man or the poet.
A tragic figure who I continue to believe has even more ‘meat on the bone’ to discover. From his wife, to his personal demons, the contributions and highlights of whatever actually and ultimately constituted his life - I don’t have the bottom of the stories that were introduced.

Historia
In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement.

The music was so moving- pure magic!
Revisado: 10-05-24
I alternated in the first several chapters between wanting the book to be over and wanting to know what would happen next. These characters as voiced by the narrator were not instantly likable to me, except for Miss Quinn, but the sheer creativity and imagination and lovely writing got me hooked. I will likely listen again, my highest praise and not something I often make time to do in the vast array of available distractions and new offerings.

Historia
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Revisado: 08-16-24
I enjoyed going in depth with each character and the particulars of how she used the feature for each one in advancing the story. And while I got tired of the recipes, I didn’t skip through them but used the time to process what I’d just read, and anticipate what might come.
Will read more of her work! GREAT narration- really helped the story soar.

Historia
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

Revisado: 07-25-24
Jennifer Ikeda’s aptitude with foreign languages and accents in general adds a welcome layer to the story. Sometimes I felt the writing went on a bit much but I never wanted to give up. Such fraught lives but centered in love and comfort - I look forward to the next one!

While this is a typical example of the category, the narration brought it up a level and the story had enough complexity and different points of view to really excite my interest. Waiting for Book 2!
