Good Story Ruined by Poor Narrator
Revisado: 03-07-25
I’ve enjoyed all of the previous books in this series, but this new narrator has me wondering if I can continue listening. This narrator has no sense of cadence or rhythm, often emphasizing the wrong parts of sentences, which changes the meaning. What seemed like pretty smart writing in previous books now seems insipid or lame. This just reinforces the importance the narrator plays in audio books!

...but there was something about the narrator’s speech patterns that bugged me. Too hard to be more specific, but I was distracted by it, and that’s never a good thing.

Revisado: 07-31-19
I’m not sure if it’s the age of this book, but the love relationship in the story just seemed so dated. It may be I was just too turned off by the ultra-girly voice of the narrator to be able to enjoy the book. This is a rare Nora Roberts that I regret reading.

Ridiculous Story!
Revisado: 03-10-19
I've read a number of Christina Dodd books, including the Virtue Falls series. I've always found her characters a bit odd, and her storylines clumsy, but enjoyed the stories enough to read her again. Big mistake. While the setting for this book is interesting, and the plot and characters had potential, the whole story is laid out so awkwardly that it was hard to keep everything straight. There are missing pieces to the main character's memory, and these missing pieces are doled out throughout the book at odd times, and with no apparent explanation as to why they came back to her. The final pieces of that puzzle are presented in a big info dump at the end, and are so preposterous as to defy anyone's ability to suspend disbelief. And don't get me started on the abrupt and dissatisfying final scene.
I lost count of how many times I thought (or sometimes called out), "what the heck?" when a new and unconvincing plot twist was introduced. As my husband said, it was almost like the book was written by committee. And not successfully.

Conflicted Thoughts
Revisado: 07-07-17
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The author's vocabulary could use some work; the mythology of her paranormal characters was odd; the backstory was introduced very oddly and out of sync with the story.
Would you be willing to try another book from Cecy Robson? Why or why not?
I am willing to listen to the next book, because in spite of the negatives, the story was interesting enough, and the characters likable enough to want to continue learning about their lives. I'm also hopeful that the author's writing style improved as she wrote more books.
What didn’t you like about Renée Chambliss’s performance?
Most egregious was her mispronunciation of words such as, "sashay", but her voice took a bit of getting used to in general, as it is quite trebly.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Maybe. The issues with the story line could easily get worked out with a good screenplay.

Wow. Just wow.
Revisado: 10-27-15
It's been awhile since I've been so quickly engrossed and involved in a book. The characters in If You Only Knew are real humans, with flaws and life-changing challenges to deal with. This is not a "Calgon, take me away" kind of romance, so of you're expecting a perfect, hunky firefighter type male lead with six pack abs, look elsewhere. If you want to read a riveting story about love, loss, hope, and family, then download this book right now.

A New Author to Follow!
Revisado: 10-26-15
This is the first Jane Casey book I've read, but it will not be my last. Her characters have depth and humor, two traits I look for. The story was interesting, as it contained two mysteries in one. My only criticism was the extensive monologuing by the villain towards the end. It seemed a less than stellar way to wrap things up.
I absolutely loved the narrator, and hope she narrates the other Casey books.
Now I have to try not to speak in an English accent all day. ;-)

Another Fine Stabenow Work
Revisado: 05-23-15
It was difficult to read this book, in that it was difficult to grieve so fully with someone like Kate. Stabenow handled that emotional challenge deftly, as well as the intricate plot and characterizations. I will say the narration seemed a bit lackluster. Either this was the first book Gavin narrated in the series (which would be odd and out of order, since she narrated the 10 before), or she was under the weather the whole time.
